The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Mercedes-Benz
USA have issued a recall notice for the 2017 Mercedes-AMG G65, and it's
affects 20 vehicles in the U.S. The software that limits the vehicle
speed when in reverse isn't correctly calibrated. It allows the vehicle
to exceed 16 mph, and making a sharp turn over that speed could cause
the vehicle to become unstable. Though the NHTSA doesn't say it, that
likely means the G65 could possible roll over. A short track and a high
center of gravity will cause that kind of issue. The G65 is powered by
a twin-turbocharged 6.5-liter V-12 that produces 621 horsepower and 738
pound-feet of torque. That's enough to get the comically heavy G65 from
0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The G65 weighs in at at least 6,250 pounds. To
remedy the issue, Mercedes-Benz will update the ECU software. This puts
the proper speed limiter in place. The fix will be great for most
owners, but some may be looking to get into movie-style chases. A
reverse-speed limiter will spoil the fun and make the whole affair a
bit less cinematic, though it will certainly be much safer.

Normally, stating that a new or updated car is just like its
predecessor kind of saps the life out of its 鈥渘ewness.鈥?Take the
2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS450, for example. Its close kinship with last
year鈥檚 GL450 may not be exciting, but it is a good thing, as that
model represented the ideal intersection of price, performance, and
fuel economy in the four-model GL-class lineup. For 2017, that family
stays the same aside from a minor name change to GLS-class and subtle
cosmetic updates inside and out. Sharing its 362-hp 3.0-liter
twin-turbocharged V-6 with the pre-refresh, S-less GL450, the GLS450
again slots into the lineup above the diesel-powered GLS350d and below
the high-powered, high-priced, eight-cylinder GLS550 and GLS63 AMG
variants. 1650 over a GLS350d, and for that extra scratch you get 107
more horsepower at the expense of a few mpg. GL350 diesel and the
GL550, the GLS450 compares favorably. The GL350 BlueTec reached 60 mph
in 7.5 seconds and returned 22 mpg, while the GL550 accelerated to 60
mph in 5.4 seconds but delivered a dismal 14 mpg.

After getting to spend time in sports cars, hatchbacks, mid-size
sedans, large cars, and a variety of SUVs, I was excited to see a
Mercedes-Benz - my first ever - eagerly awaiting my arrival at the
CarAdvice Melbourne office. The car in question is the German brand鈥檚
first-ever small SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. With compact SUVs
being the hottest cars to have at the moment, the GLA is one I really
like, combining the good looks of a hatchback with the go-anywhere vibe
of a high-riding SUV. Loading gear into the roomy 421-litre boot is
easy thanks to the power tailgate鈥檚 key-fob release, with additional
smarts coming from the adjustable tailgate opening height- an ideal
feature for those with a low-roof carport. Even though the car is
almost 1.5m tall on the outside, there isn鈥檛 a lot of headroom
inside. Luckily I鈥檓 not any taller than six-foot, otherwise we could鈥
檝e had an issue.

May 18, 2018 鈥?Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 9,800 vehicles
equipped with "Active Curve" systems that may leak oil onto hot
surfaces and cause engine compartment fires. Mercedes says the
combination of oil levels below minimum and certain driving conditions
can cause the Active Curve oil reservoir to start foaming oil that can
leak through the vent holes of the cap. The oil can spray onto hot
surfaces and cause an engine compartment fire, which is what led the
automaker to discover the problems. In July 2017, Mercedes received a
fire report with a 2015 model that showed local "thermal" damage in the
engine compartment, causing engineers to open an investigation. First
results of the analysis indicated leaking oil from the oil reservoir of
the Active Curve system through the vent holes in the sealing cap of
the oil reservoir. Engineers were able to cause oil in the oil pump to
foam up under certain driving conditions, a problem blamed on the low
oil level in the Active Curve system. Mercedes-Benz isn't ready to
perform the recall just yet, so owners should watch for initial recall
notices in June 2018. The automaker will send second notices when
dealers are ready to make the repairs. Dealers are expected to correct
the oil levels and replace the reservoir sealing caps.
