P0430 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates the catalyst system's efficiency is below the threshold on bank 2 of the engine. "Bank 2" refers to the side of the engine opposite to bank 1. For vehicles with inline engines, there is only one bank, so the code pertains to that bank. As with P0420, the catalytic converter's efficiency is being monitored by the vehicle's engine control module (ECM) using the oxygen (O2) sensors located before and after the catalytic converter. When the ECM detects that the downstream (post-catalytic) O2 sensor's readings are too similar to the upstream (pre-catalytic) O2 sensor's readings on bank 2, it indicates that the catalytic converter on bank 2 is not effectively reducing emissions, and the P0430 code is triggered.
