Hyundai Veloster N TCR




The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N promises plenty of thrills, but fans looking for even more excitement might want to check out the Veloster N TCR. 153,055) excluding shipping. In 1957, Porsche added the Carrera De Luxe to the mix, restoring the heater and glass side windows to the GT, along with the street-friendly exhaust. The De Luxe had slightly lower performance figures, at 100 DIN horsepower and 85 DIN pound-feet of torque. For 1958, the 356A received an update to the new T2 body style. With the new body, the Carrera GT was fitted with aluminum doors and both front and back hoods. The new lightweight hoods were louvered, and the front hood had a permanent opening for the fuel filler. The Carrera continued to receive special high-performance parts, including an upgraded transmission and steering assembly. For 1959, Porsche upgraded the Carrera engine to 1587 cc and renamed the line to the 1600 GS-GT. The new engine delivered up to 115 DIN horsepower and up to 100 DIN pound-feet of torque in the GT version, and 105 DIN horsepower and 89 DIN pound-feet in the De Luxe model.





The 356B with T5 body was introduced as a 1960 model year car in late 1959, and Porsche itself no longer offered the Carrera models. Buyers could still, however, go direct to coachbuilder Reutter and purchase lightweight bodies and four-cam 1587 cc engines. The next Carrera offered by Porsche came in 1962 with the advent of the T6 body style shared with late 356B and the 356C models. The new car was called the Carrera 2 and featured a 1966 cc engine called the Type 578. This engine delivered 130 DIN hp and 116 DIN pound-feet of torque. Collectors are advised to carefully research provenance and condition. Porsche four-cam Carrera engines are notoriously expensive to repair, and the number of people who are truly qualified to work on them is very small. The relative rarity of other unique parts makes a Carrera restoration a bigger project than an already expensive basic Porsche 356 restoration. That being said, a verified 356 Carrera of any kind is among the gold standard cars of the collector world.





It still has the same fundamental extents of the past X5: short front and back shades, and a boxier general shape. 2019 Hyundai Veloster




Hyundai unveiled a new Rally Edition, coupled with significant design, dynamic and connectivity enhancements to its Veloster coupe at the Chicago Auto Show today. The Veloster Rally Edition builds upon Veloster Turbo R-Spec enthusiast credentials, with a more performance-focused suspension, RAYS lightweight wheels with wide 225/40R18 tires, carbon-fiber-look aero accents, unique badging and floor mats. The Rally Edition is a limited production run planned for 1,200 units, all in a stunning Matte Blue paint, guaranteeing exclusivity to its enthusiast owners. In addition, the 2016 Veloster Turbo model now offers a performance-oriented 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), a new machined-finish turbo-exclusive wheel design, a sportier seat design, enhanced electroluminescent gauge cluster and black headliner. The Veloster non-turbo receives a new 17-inch wheel design and available black seats with yellow accents. Also for 2016, all Veloster models offer a revised hood appearance without vent accents, a dark gray grille surround, 10mm-wider tires fitted to all 18-inch wheels, and new audio/navigation system functions (HD Radio, Apple Siri, and next-generation Blue Link).





All Veloster and Veloster Turbo models feature cutting-edge powertrain technologies like direct injection, optimizing their appeal to youthful customers by combining excellent fuel economy, spirited performance and low emissions without compromise. RAYS lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels (5 lbs. New for 2016, the Veloster Rally Edition leverages the street credibility established by the Turbo R-Spec model. It features a higher performance tune for the springs, dampers, and front stabilizer bar, for even more responsive and precise handling capabilities. Complementing these suspension tuning upgrades, RAYS lightweight alloy wheels have been fitted, reducing unsprung weight by five pounds per wheel for even better dynamic response and a distinctive sports appearance. In profile, the Veloster features 鈥淔luidic Sculpture鈥?character lines, muscular wheel arches, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Veloster鈥檚 dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch and dual center-fascia chrome exhaust tips that complement the assertive front fascia. On the Turbo, the Veloster offers two distinctive, free-flowing round exhaust tips. Further, all Turbo models feature Active Sound Design, providing richer in-cabin powertrain sound character for an even more involving driving experience, especially during spirited driving. From the bigger, bolder hexagonal front grille, ground effects, rear bumper fascia, and prominent diffuser vents, Veloster Turbo鈥檚 design adds aggression and aerodynamic stability compared with the base model. A new set of machined-finish 18-inch alloy wheels with argent spoke bevels add sophistication and sportiness to the side profile. From the front, Veloster Turbo reveals eight individual headlight LED accents, a feature typical on more expensive models. Inside Veloster Turbo, leather seating surfaces with Turbo embroidering on the side bolsters help deliver a distinctive appearance while providing higher levels of comfort and support. The Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use direct injection.





This technology helps deliver more power, superior efficiency, lower emissions and higher reliability. With direct-injection, the Gamma 1.6-liter engine with manual transmission delivers a peak output of 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.-ft. 4,850 rpm. The Gamma engine with dual-clutch transmission delivers 132 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 120 lb.-ft. 4,850 rpm. The Gamma also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings. Hyundai鈥檚 commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT) developed by Hyundai. Hyundai鈥檚 EcoShift DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, including low fuel consumption, and blends them with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and smooth shift quality. In addition, the EcoShift DCT enables direct connection for high efficiency and uninterrupted torque transfer during shifts.

Hyundai Veloster N TCR




The North American International Auto Show continues as Hyundai has used to event to unveil the Veloster N TCR race car. Set to compete in this year鈥檚 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, the Veloster will battle the Audi RS3 LMS TCR, Honda Civic Type R TCR and Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR. That鈥檚 not exactly easy competition, but the Veloster already has a bit of a racing pedigree. The car shares around 85 percent of its core components with the championship-winning i30 N TCR. One of the components sourced from the i30 N is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 350 hp and 450 Nm of torque. It is connected to a six-speed sequential transmission which sends power to the front wheels. Of course, race cars are more than just a high-performance engine. As a result, the Veloster has composite body panels, a massive rear wing and 18-inch Braid wheels. The latter components are backed up by a race-spec braking system that features six-piston calipers and 380mm ventilated discs up front. The modifications don鈥檛 end there as the model has been equipped with an aerodynamic body kit, a steel roll cage and a track-tuned suspension with adjustable dampers. Other highlights include a configurable driver鈥檚 display and a Sabelt racing seat with a six-point harness. Bryan Herta Autosport has been tapped to be Hyundai鈥檚 sales agent for the Veloster N TCR in the United States and they will also provide technical support as well as parts assistance. 154,905 (拢 120,165 / 鈧?135,000) excluding shipping from Germany.





If you want it in leather, it can be wrapped in leather. If you want paint to match Grandma鈥檚 heirloom sapphire, Porsche would probably do that, too. Most Cayennes in America, however, are sold off the lot. Only about 20 percent are made to order鈥攔oughly half the rate of 911s here. The Sport Chrono package is standard in the U.S., too, although we recommend substituting the no-cost alternative displaying an analog compass/digital altimeter/clock in its place. A stopwatch/chronograph on the dash of a plug-in Cayenne seems a bit out of place. Like the rest of the Cayenne lineup, this model gets the newest Porsche infotainment interface. It includes a 12.3-inch high-resolution touchscreen in the center console as well as two screens flanking the analog tachometer in the instrument cluster that do admirable facsimiles of genuine dial-and-needle gauges. Apple CarPlay is standard, but Android Auto is a no-show. Porsche鈥檚 new menu structure has yet to be ingrained in our subconscious, and it seems generally as though there is at least one layer too many to the various menus.





And, through other experience with the same system in the Panamera, we wish the volume wheel was backlit at night. But owners will likely overcome the learning curve. The added complexity of the portfolio and complete redesign didn鈥檛 affect the cost by so much as one dollar. 80,950鈥攁s the outgoing hybrid Cayenne, despite the addition of new standard equipment including LED headlights and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control along with Porsche鈥檚 crafty InnoDrive, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist are also available. Choosing between the 440-hp Cayenne S and the 455-hp Cayenne E-Hybrid is purely up to preference. 3000 cheaper than the S, and its total system output is 15 horses more than the S鈥檚 twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6. Drawbacks for the hybrid model are so few and seemingly inconsequential that the upgrade over the S is to us a no-brainer. If Porsche鈥檚 hybrid models continue to improve this much with every generation, the company鈥檚 status as a sports-car icon might be usurped by renown for hybrid expertise. While that鈥檚 highly unlikely, Porsche, please don鈥檛 forget about all your wonderful sports cars. We鈥檒l agree not to, either.

Hyundai's N performance line starts fast, boding well for Veloster

NüRBURG, Germany — Encouraged by the promising start of its performance line among demanding European consumers, Hyundai hopes its upcoming Veloster N sports car can improve its perception among U.S. buyers.

The Korean automaker, no longer satisfied with being just a rational choice for penny pinchers, believes injecting its value-oriented image with a dose of high-octane emotion can win over customers who never considered a Hyundai.

"We're fishing in a different pond," said Thomas Schemera, the former BMW executive who heads Hyundai's high-performance vehicle division, while testing continued for the preproduction Veloster N here on Germany's premier proving ground.

The rise of the N brand represents a significant step in Hyundai's evolution as a global competitor and comes at a critical time for the company.

For years, Hyundai's formula was value, surprisingly well-equipped cars sold for a few ticks below the big-name Asian competitors. It solidified that reputation by racing up the quality rankings and backing its products with a long warranty.

But value as a value proposition can have its downside. Customers who vote with their pocketbooks are more prone to switch to a rival brand should they move up in the world or find a more compelling offer elsewhere, reducing a manufacturer's inherent pricing power and profitability.

In Europe, Hyundai has struggled for years to cultivate a more aspirational image despite having launched a line of "i" cars designed with local tastes in mind, such as the i30 compact, which is not sold in the U.S.

But it might now have found the answer in the new i30 N, a hot hatch that packs all the performance features of competitors and then some for a substantially lower cost. It does this by relying on optimized off-the-shelf parts from Hyundai's network of affiliated Korean suppliers rather than expensive brand-name components such as Brembo brakes. In some cases, the discount from the cost of a rival such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI can be up to a fifth of the price.

The i30 N, on sale since September, hit its 2018 full-year sales target by the end of June, and customers ordering the car now won't receive one until next year.

"Initial sales of N products are going beyond expectations," said Schemera. "Almost 3,000 units of the i30 N were sold in the first half of 2018 in Europe."

The model's father, longtime BMW performance car engineer Albert Biermann, believes the second half will be just as solid as the first.

"We can't build enough," he said, adding that the Veloster N will be even sportier than its European sibling in part because of 88 fewer pounds on the ribs. "We have a six- to seven-month waiting list on the car basically everywhere."

Grueling test

While the N in the brand's name technically refers to Hyundai's South Korean r&d center in Namyang, the chicane-style logo reflects the vehicles' true birthplace: the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The racetrack features a 13-mile circuit with 73 bends, an elevation difference of almost 1,000 feet and untold surface changes in the asphalt. Enthusiasts believe it to be the world's most grueling and dangerous course, and lap records here are considered the benchmark for high-performance cars.

That means even customers who grew up driving on the autobahn and bringing their car to the Nordschleife racetrack on public days have been impressed by the i30 N hatchback.

"Germany by far had the biggest numbers planned," said Biermann, "yet they ran out first." If such discerning car buyers purchase two and a half times what Hyundai had budgeted this year, as he expects, there's no telling what N might achieve in the U.S.

Describing the Veloster N's 2.0-liter gasoline engine in terms of power — 275 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque — wouldn't do it justice, Hyundai engineers say. They weren't targeting sheer output but an immediate response to changes in throttle, mitigating effects from turbo lag to make the vehicle perform as smoothly and predictably as a naturally aspirated coupe.

Since straight-line speed is rarely useful on U.S. roads, more emphasis was also placed on the chassis's lateral dynamics and roll angles when cornering. To better appeal to enthusiasts, all Veloster N's have six-speed manual transmissions with rev matching to allow for quicker acceleration out of a curve when downshifting. A higher-power version also boasts an electronically controlled differential to limit front-wheel slip and improve traction when rounding a bend.

Profits at stake

But a few thousand more sales won't move the needle for a carmaker the size of Hyundai. To multiply the effect of the N cars, its image must trickle down to the base models. Hyundai will want normal customers looking for a sportier image to be tempted by such offerings as an N-style interior trim or customized N-themed options such as unique rims or a spoiler sporting the N logo.

There's an economic reason behind this investment. Hyundai can't afford to leave money on the table or lose customers. Hyundai Motor Co.'s profits were down by more than one-third in the first half of 2018, and the company has warned of more pain if threatened tariffs on imported vehicles and parts take hold.

The weak profits stem in part from a slow recovery after last year's geopolitical tensions, when the U.S. stationed an anti-missile system in South Korea. The move angered Beijing and ignited a wave of anti-Korean sentiment in China, crippling Hyundai's local operations.

Sales of the brand in the world's largest vehicle market plummeted in response, initially causing its Chinese plants to go from full utilization to just 35 percent.

Hyundai expects to sell only about 900,000 vehicles in China this year despite installed capacity of more than 1.3 million vehicles there.

The group has responded by restructuring the bulk of its overseas operations, placing responsibility for domestic production in the hands of its local sales operation to better align output with actual demand in order to protect margins.

But Hyundai won't rush things with its N models if Biermann has anything to say about it. The demanding standards he inherited from BMW mean he is examining options for coming models. He won't even commit to a halo model that could borrow elements from the brand's "rolling lab," the Project RM sports car concept.

For Veloster N customers in the U.S., there's one big downside: They will have to compete with Korean customers for supplies of the car, a problem not made easier by a retooling at a key engine supply plant.

"The Veloster [capacity issue] is much worse," said Biermann, acknowledging his team is now playing catch-up. "We will probably sell more than 10 times the number in Korea than was planned."
