If you want to get your kids to soccer practice faster, then AMG has
the performance-tuned people-mover for you - the 2013 Mercedes-Benz
GL63 AMG. We first learned about AMG's upcoming three-row, twin-turbo
V-8-powered beast a few months ago, and now the automaker is using this
week's Moscow auto show for the GL63's official world debut. As
previously reported, the hood is stuffed with a twin-turbo,
direct-injected 5.5-liter V-8 producing 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.
It's essentially the same M157 mill found in the five-passenger ML63
with tweaks from the optional AMG Performance Package. Power is sent to
all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic. Mercedes claims it'll go
from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, about 0.6 seconds quicker than the GL550
(we achieved 5.1 seconds during our most recent test of the 2013
GL550). Other performance tidbits include an AMG Ride Control sports
suspension and an Active Curve System, both of which help make this
5500-pound (give or take) SUV more nimble. Russian auto show-goers will
undoubtedly find the GL63's interior just as impressive as its spec
sheet. Standard niceties include premium leather surfaces with contrast
stitching, AMG sport seats with massage function, a flat-bottom
steering wheel, three-zone climate control, and AMG badges. Outside,
the GL63 is fitted with an aggressive front fascia, 21-inch multi-spoke
rims, and quad-tip exhaust. Mercedes also announced initial pricing for
the German market, slapping the GL63 AMG with a 130,305-euro price tag
(U.S. The launch date in Europe has been set for November.

Before the recession, Mercedes-Benz had no trouble selling 34,000 MLs
in the U.S. For 2011, the company鈥檚 best-known SUV is back on track
to hit 30,000 sales. Right now, in fact, ML sales are up 14.5 percent.
鈥淚t puts us in a funny position,鈥?confesses Mercedes U.S.A. CEO
Ernst Lieb. 鈥淲e鈥檙e spending millions to replace a car that remains
a huge profit center.鈥?It鈥檚 like replacing Yankee Stadium鈥檚 hot
dogs with, say, toaster waffles. Are you sure you want to mess with a
good thing? That鈥檚 nonetheless what Mercedes is doing with its
third-gen M-class, which, we hasten to add, resembles wieners and
waffles only in its ability to cause customers to queue up. This new ML
is about an inch longer and a half-inch wider, and it squats 0.8-inch
lower than before. Cargo capacity behind the rear seat has grown seven
cubic feet. The baseball bat of a turn-signal/wiper stalk thankfully
has been moved to the 10-o鈥檆lock position on the steering column, and
its cruise-control function has been relegated to a second stalk at 8
o鈥檆lock. Unfortunately, you鈥檒l still find yourself flicking at the
column-mounted gear selector whenever you desire wipers.

almost as commonplace as smartphones, the world begs for a bold outcast
that does its duties a bit different from everyone else. The new 2013
Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec is just the vehicle to foreshadow its
differences to transport up to 7 passengers in plush luxury and reach
new fuel economy heights with its diesel-powered 4MATIC drivetrain.
Making its duties in style, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL350 gets a diesel
powered V6 engine under its sculpted aluminum hood with a modest 240
horsepower but has a pavement-clawing 455 ft-lbs of torque as low as
1,600 rpm. The output is much improved over the outgoing model, which
is needed to get the momentum of all 5,835 pounds moving in the right
direction. In the scope of available full-sized luxury SUVs on the
market, the list isn鈥檛 all that long. Bring up the category of a
diesel-powered SUV and the list just about disappears with the
exception of a few German counterparts. Mercedes-Benz continues to keep
the narrow segment alive and laced with luxury and some efficiency.

to alert you. If you continue to drift, the car selectively brakes
individual wheels to help guide it back into its lane. The technology
is called Active Lane Keeping Assist. If a vehicle is trying to
overtake you, a radar senses as it enters the blind-spot area on either
side of you, and alerts you by illuminating an icon in the side mirror.
If you activate a turn signal, a warning tone sounds. The technology is
called Active Blind Spot Assist. If you鈥檙e approaching a
slower-moving or stopped vehicle at a speed that suggests a collision
is likely, a technology automatically provides the ideal level of
braking. If you fail to react, the vehicle brakes itself. The Active
Brake Assist is in play. Yet another technology called Attention Assist
monitors driving behaviour, and if it detects signs of drowsiness, it
alerts you with visual and audible warnings. It鈥檚 time to have a cup
of coffee.
