The original Jeep was the first military vehicle that found widespread
popularity in civilian dress. Then came the Hum-Vee, which also spawned
GM鈥檚 hummer brand of over-the-top 4x4s. Still, the Mercedes-Benz
G-Class, or G-Wagen, stands apart. Now in production for almost
40-years, the 鈥淕elandewagon鈥?has long since left its military side
behind, and become the pinnacle of Mercedes exclusivity. Whether it鈥檚
our own Jeep and Hummer, Japan鈥檚 Land Cruiser, or Britain鈥檚 Land
Rover, every developed country seems to have a battle-ready vehicle
built to conquer both enemy territory as well as suburbia. For almost
40 years in Germany that role has been played by the Mercedes-Benz
G-wagen, or as it鈥檚 now known, the G-Class. As has always been the
case with all of these military-inspired utes, the G-Class has become
more-and-more popular, continuing to grow more user-friendly, with ever
increasing levels of comfort and luxury. But then every once in a
while, engineers seem intent on proving that these leather-lined rigs
are built for a lot more than just trolling country clubs or making a
statement in the carpool lane. Thus, we get special versions like this
2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4X4 squared.

Showfloor update: No surprises here at the 2014 Detroit show, as the
Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG production car looks just like the concept we
saw not even two months ago at the 2013 L.A. Although it does without
the concept's blacked-out C-pillars, it's available with black anodized
beltline trim, chrome grille louvers, and gloss black exterior trim,
all part of an optional Night appearance package. Unfortunately, the
wild Edition 1 with its AMG racing stripes and massive rear wing, isn't
available in the U.S. Compared to the regular GLA250, it's been lowered
20 mm in the rear and 15 mm in the front, making it look more like a
hot hatch than a CUV. At almost 5'2, I had some headroom in the back,
but significantly more in the front. A much taller journalist said he
fit comfortably in the driver's seat, but most everyone hit their heads
trying to climb into the rear seats. First revealed as a concept at the
L.A. 48,375 CLA45. But that doesn't mean it's any less of an AMG
compared to larger stablemates such as the ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG, and G63
AMG.

If the exterior of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML250 pictured here looks
nearly identical to the 2014 ML350 it replaces, that鈥檚 probably
because it is. Comparisons are inevitable, so let鈥檚 get this out of
the way right now: Packing 200 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the
diesel in ML250 trim can鈥檛 match the 240-hp and 455-lb-ft ratings of
the departed ML350鈥檚 turbo-diesel V-6. But losing two cylinders has
its benefits, namely a reduction in weight. Registering a still-hefty
5041 pounds on the C/D scales, the ML250 nevertheless shaves 162 pounds
off the 5203-pound figure of a 2013 ML350 BlueTec 4MATIC we tested for
a recent diesel-SUV comparo. Unfortunately, the reduction in weight
isn鈥檛 enough to offset the loss of muscle. At 8.3 seconds to 60 mph
and 16.3 seconds to the quarter-mile mark, the ML250 gives up about a
second to the 7.0- and 15.4-second times delivered by the old ML350鈥檚
V-6.
