What you see here is the new Mercedes-AMG GLS63, the top performance
version of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GL. This mid-life refreshment
for the largest of posh Mercedes-Benz SUVs will also bring the dreaded
new naming scheme, linking the old GL with its saloon counterpart, the
S-Class. That means the facelifted model will go by the name of
Mercedes-Benz GLS or Mercedes-AMG GLS63, respectively. Our spy
photographers have caught one such example testing on the road and we
thought it would be a good idea to share their work. The Mercedes-AMG
GLS63 is wearing less camouflage than it did the previous times its
picture was snapped, so we can get a better idea now about how the car
will look like. Well, to put it bluntly, it will look like a facelifted
Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, that's how. The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 seems
to get pretty much the same front end treatment as the other
Mercedes-AMG SUVs, with new headlights, radiator grille and lower
bumper, and why shouldn't it?

Fresh off a complete second-generation redesign, the Mercedes-Benz
GL350 BlueTEC is the oil-burning variant - and the entry-level model -
in the automaker's GL-Class lineup. A luxury SUV with an efficient
diesel engine screams "Roadtrip!" - so I loaded up my family of four
and headed north up famed California State Route 1 to Hearst Castle for
the day. The well-isolated GL proved every bit as spectacular as
newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst's "ranch" on the hill,
seemingly determined to justify its recent accolade. The heart of the
GL350 BlueTEC is a 3.0-liter four-valve direct-injected turbocharged
diesel engine rated at 240 horsepower, but delivering a whopping 455
pound-feet from as low as 1,600 rpm. There is a bit of turbo lag off
the line, especially when rushed, but the standard seven-speed
automatic does an admirable job hustling the 5,467-pound vehicle to 60
mph in under eight seconds. In real-world driving conditions, the
torque makes it feel quicker than that.

The 2013 GL is one of the most comfortable-riding SUVs we've tested,
but handling is clumsy at its limits. Interior accommodations are top
notch. Available features include a self-parking system and a
360-degree camera view. We feel the GL350 BlueTec is the most sensible
combination. The engine is refined and efficient, and the GL rides
better with the 19-inch wheels. If you plan to tow, it's a lot cheaper
to get the hitch included with the factory tow package rather than
adding it after the fact. Blind spot monitoring is a good idea for this
big SUV and should be standard, but Mercedes-Benz charges extra for it.
Driver's aids include lane keeping assist, collision prevention, smart
cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. This seven-passenger luxury
SUV has a great deal of interior space, with a third-row seat roomy
enough for adults. The 4.6-liter V8 is smooth and delivers strong
performance. Expect 15 mpg overall; diesel models return 19-20 mpg
overall, impressive for a large SUV. Handling is relatively responsive,
with good steering feel that belies the GL's size and weight. It proved
secure and forgiving in our tests, the ride is comfortable, and the
interior is very quiet. Fit and finish is excellent, but some controls
are overly complicated. The GL can tackle most off-road situations, and
towing capacity is impressive. Available features include a
self-parking system and a 360-degree camera view.

The program is called "Mercedes-Benz Collection," and it actually
provides a pretty broad range of cars to those who subscribe. The plan,
like others from OEMs, has more than one tier. 1,595 per month and
gives you access to vehicles like the C43 AMG, the E400 wagon and the
GLE350 SUV. 2,995 per month you can access the Premier tier, and with
that, you can drive around in a C63 S sedan, a G550 SUV or an SL550
roadster. Dietmar Exler, president and CEO for MBUSA. If your jaw is on
the floor over the price of the Premier tier, you're not alone. That's
a lot of cash per month, but the ability to "flip" into different
vehicles with minimal notice through the Mercedes-Benz Collection
concierge service is pretty cool. As with most subscription plans, cars
are delivered to you cleaned and fueled, and the plan includes
insurance. Joining is a relatively simple process. You just have to
download the Mercedes-Benz Collection app and go through the prompts,
which include sending a photo of your driver's license, and in around
24 hours you should have a decision on your application. 495
application fee, and you're in. Is it a good deal? In the classic
sense, not really, but if you're a person of means and you really,
really like being seen in a new Mercedes-Benz, then it seems like an
excellent way to go. Every car infotainment system available in 2019:
All you need to know about the touchscreens, infotainment and
connectivity options in every new car.
