2019 Porsche Macan Road Test

When Porsche launched their first SUV back in 2004, brand loyalists howled. The idea that a carmaker rooted in building finely crafted, uncompromising sports cars would dilute the brand DNA with something so suburban and mainstream was simply too much for Porsche purists to bear. Fast forward a decade: The midsized Cayenne SUV is now Porsche's top-selling model and more than a few of those loyalists have found room for one alongside the 911 in their garage. More importantly, it opened the Porsche brand to a new breed of customer who never previously would have considered Stuttgart steel. With the Macan compact crossover, Porsche has broadened their SUV catalog. Targeted at competitors like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Macan leans more toward sport than utility in the SUV equation. With handling, acceleration, and braking performance that put most sports sedans to shame, the Macan is easily the most thrilling SUV we've tested. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 in our Macan S delivers effortless power, mated to an automated manual transmission that fires off quick, decisive shifts punctuated by a race-ready exhaust bark. The BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX don't even come close to that thrust.

For all its commitment to performance, the Macan still manages to deliver a measure of utility. Standard all-wheel drive and all-season tires make it a viable four-season vehicle, and the split-folding rear seats add cargo versatility. There's room for five friendly passengers in the quiet, luxurious, and impeccably finished interior, with comfortable and well-shaped seats up front. So, what's not to like? The Macan doles out rear seat room with the frugality of the Bundesbank. The same goes for the cargo area. Visibility is limited by a small rear window. As you would expect for a sports-car-meets-SUV, fuel economy is a thirsty 19 mpg overall. The Macan doesn't come cheap. Then again, what did you expect? It's a Porsche. Although the Macan has a base price a few pfennigs shy of 50 large, it is pretty much impossible to find one so equipped on dealer lots. 63,290 -- considerably more than any of its competitors. Adding a few options can drive up the price almost as quickly as the Macan accelerates. Even something as basic as a rear camera, standard on many mainstream cars, is a pricey option on the Macan. Still, if you categorize the Macan as a high-performance, all-wheel-drive hatchback, rather than a weekend workhorse for lumber runs, it is a very appealing, albeit pricey, package. And compared to some other Porsche models, it may even be something of a relative bargain.

Senior car industry figures were in London last week for the annual two-day Financial Times Future of the Car Summit. But when it came to the crunch question on whether he was aware that talks had taken place between PSA and JLR鈥檚 current owner Tata, Speth鈥檚 response was limp at best. There is an increasing belief that JLR might well benefit from a switch of owner. Acquisition by PSA would lead to a brutal period of cost-cutting, for sure, but it could deliver profits for Jaguar and Land Rover just as quickly as the rapid turnaround delivered at Opel and Vauxhall during the past 18 months. A PSA deal - or, for that matter, a switch to ownership by a major Chinese manufacturer - would also open Jaguar and Land Rover to a wider pool of technologies than either brand presently gets from Tata. Discovery Sport now, at launch, instead of in six or nine months鈥?time. If anything, though, Speth鈥檚 attitude to partnerships with other brands was what drew the deepest gasps at the FT Summit. 鈥淵ou can talk about economies of scale and that鈥檚 correct,鈥?he said, 鈥渂ut on the other hand, there鈥檚 the freedom we have to develop and do our own strategy in a fast way, a structured way. His dedication to independence is admirable, in a way. But with car makers facing huge bills for developing EV technology, it鈥檚 hard to find anyone in the industry who thinks that JLR鈥檚 relative isolation makes any sense at all. Do you think Jaguar Land Rover could benefit from a change of owner?

Geely has taken a 50 per cent stake in the Smart city car brand from parent company Daimler, it has been confirmed. The pair will build a new generation of all-electric Smart models by 2022, with production taking place at Geely鈥檚 purpose-built factory in China. As part of its expansion strategy, Geely and Daimler will also broaden the Smart range into the B-segment market, producing a premium rival for the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 Sportback, it has emerged. Until 2022, Daimler will continue to build the current Smart EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour at its facilities in Hambach, France and Novo Mesto, Slovenia respectively. From 2022 Daimler鈥檚 Hambach plant will begin construction of a new EQ-branded compact electric car, following a 鈧?00 million investment by Mercedes-Benz. Daimler鈥檚 Chairman of the Board, Dieter Zetsche, said: 鈥淲e look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. Geely鈥檚 new partnership with Daimler Auto Group follows its recent 拢6.4 billion investment in the German company. Over the last decade, Geely has taken total financial control of Volvo, Polestar, the London Taxi Company, Lynk & Co and Yuan Cheng Auto, as well as partially financial control of Proton and Lotus.

The Audi SQ5 has done rather well for itself scoring positive points in most reviews. Seen as how it鈥檚 a fast, techy and practical SUV, its success is easy to comprehend. It all starts with the 3.0-liter TFSI V6 unit underneath the hood, sending 354 PS to all four wheels, along with 500 Nm of torque. It can hit 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, and 96 km/h in 5.1 seconds. However, where some see handsomeness and elegance in its subdued looks, others see the need for something more accute. It鈥檚 not a bad-looking SUV, but it won鈥檛 get your attention either, unlike this version by Lumma Design. The tuner gave the SQ5 a more expressive attire, thanks to the addition of the CLR 5S body kit. It consists of a front spoiler extension, wheel arch extensions front and rear, integrated side skirt under-splitters, rear skirt extension, custom diffuser, custom door paneling, square exhaust pipes with the Lumma logo, custom wheels and an optional rear spoiler lip. All the parts are made from high quality PUR-RIM plastics and help give this SQ5 a considerably more menacing stance, from all angles.

2019 Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition

Porsche is upgrading the Cayenne six-cylinder model via a special series known as the Platinum Edition. The Platinum Edition Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel models feature some especially high-quality equipment and offer many of the most-requested options as standard. Externally, the special status of these models is demonstrated by the numerous detailed paint finishes in Platinum Silver Metallic, while an elegant ambience has been created in the interior with exclusive two-tone fittings. Porsche only assigns the Platinum Edition designation to its exclusive, elegant vehicle ranges that are available for a limited period only. The enhanced equipment range available in these vehicles is designed to increase comfort and safety in particular. For example, the Cayenne Platinum Edition models feature the eight-gear Tiptronic S, Bi-Xenon main headlights and Power Steering Plus, as well as the ParkAssist system at the front and rear as standard. The automatic anti-dazzle interior mirrors eliminate the dazzle from traffic behind the vehicle and the privacy glazing (also available as standard) protects the rear passengers from unwanted attention.

Painted in Platinum Silver Metallic, the lateral and central air intake grill fins, the side window strips, the rear spoiler lip and the trim strip on the tailgate create a shimmering effect. The standard colour range includes monotone paint finishes in Black and White, and Meteor Grey Metallic, Basalt Black Metallic and Mahogany Metallic are available as further colour options. The Carrara White Metallic paint finish is also an option available exclusively for this Cayenne edition. The look is rounded off by the 19-inch Cayenne Design II wheels with coloured crest. The Black/Luxor Beige two-tone combination, reserved for this special edition, creates an exclusively elegant ambience in the interior. The vehicles come with a partial leather interior as standard, but a full leather interior is also available as an option. The floor mats, with Luxor Beige edging and Porsche logo, and the front door entry guards with the "Platinum Edition" logo, represent further highlights. The standard SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and the embossed Porsche crest on the headrests at the front and rear emphasise the high quality of the vehicle. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, including a navigation module, is also a standard feature: The PCM includes a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and a sound system with 11 loudspeakers and total power of 235 watt. The Cayenne Platinum Edition offers an output of 300 hp (220 kW). In combination with the Tiptronic S, the vehicle's NEDC fuel consumption is 9.9 litres/100 km (236 g/km CO2). The three litre V6 engine in the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition offers an output of 245 hp (180 kW) and a fuel consumption level of 7.2 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres (189 g/km CO2). The Cayenne Platinum Edition costs 鈧?6,379 and it is 鈧?7,212 for the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition (including VAT).

On the safety front, standard systems include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam and road sign assist. Available active safety and convenience features are adaptive full speed cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and rear-end collision warning. As for the infotainment part, the 2020 Supra brings a standard 6.5-inch display operated by a rotary controller on the center console. The 3.0 Premium grade gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, rotary touch controller, Supra Connect telematics services, wireless Apple CarPlay, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system, and wireless phone charging. 55,250 for the Launch Edition, which will be the sole trim level initially available in a limited run of 1,500 units. Sales in the U.S. Launch Edition will be offered in Absolute Zero White, Nocturnal Black or Renaissance Red 2.0 paint jobs, with contrasting red mirror caps and 19-inch black matte forged alloys. The first two will get a red leather interior, while the third color option a black one, both with carbon accents. Moreover, the limited run Supras will get a plaque on the passenger鈥檚 side of the dashboard with the car鈥檚 serial numbers along with a graphic of Toyota鈥檚 CEO Akio Toyoda鈥檚 signature.

Although it鈥檚 been quite some time since Aston Martin had a six-cylinder in its range, it appears that the upcoming Aston Martin DBX crossover could be offered with a six-cylinder engine. During a recent event with Australian media, chief creative officer Marek Reichman suggested that a six-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz could suit the DBX quite well. While it remains to be seen which Mercedes six-cylinder Aston Martin could be given access to, one likely powertrain would be the M256 turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol inline six recently introduced with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. While this powertrain isn鈥檛 as exciting as the V8 and V12s currently used by Aston, it can produce upwards of 382 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, figures more than adequate for everyday use. While it remains to be seen whether Aston Martin will opt to use such an engine, we do know for sure that the DBX will be the marque鈥檚 first model to be available with a hybrid powertrain. According to the most recent reports, this variant could pair AMG鈥檚 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor offering up 200 hp. Combined, this could give the hybrid DBX more than 700 hp, making it even more powerful than the Lamborghini Urus. At least one other traditional gasoline-powered model will join the potential six-cylinder DBX. This powertrain will either be the 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 used by the DB11 and producing roughly 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque in DBX guise or the aforementioned AMG twin-turbo V8 but without any electrical assist.

Porsche 911 Carrera (2019)

In the Porsche 911 Carrera, optimised fuel consumption is complemented by Porsche-style downsizing: The 3.4-litre engine delivers more power from a smaller displacement than its predecessor with a displacement of 3.6 litres. That means the Porsche 911 Carrera with PDK is the first Porsche sports car to make it below the 200 g/km CO2 emissions threshold. With its completely revamped suspension featuring numerous redeveloped components, the Porsche 911 Carrera raises the driving dynamics bar yet another notch. The longer wheelbase alone, combined with the wider track width at the front, generates an entirely different geometry with more sure-footed tracking and roll stability at high longitudinal and cornering speeds. With the new electro-mechanical power steering, the Porsche engineers managed to develop a system that combines Porsche's trademark precision and feedback with superior consumption and comfort for the very first time. As the system only requires power when steering, the electro-mechanical system saves at least 0.1 litres per 100 kilometres. The new active Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), available for the Carrera S as an optional extra, expands the lateral dynamics boundaries yet again by a sizeable margin.

PDCC is an active roll compensation system that detects the very instant the vehicle begins to roll when cornering, eliminating it almost entirely. The system makes for greater agility in every speed regime, improved cornering and stable load change behaviour. PDCC therefore represents a new highlight in terms of driving dynamics. Making its debut in the Porsche 911 Carrera S, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), featured as standard, ensures even better tracking and tracking stability, together with reduced sensitivity to load changes. Together with a seven-speed manual transmission, this system comprises a mechanical rear differential lock and variable torque distribution to the rear axle. In vehicles fitted with the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), the even higher-performance PTV Plus comes with the electronically controlled, fully variable, rear differential lock. PTV or PTV Plus further improves agility and steering precision by means of selective braking interventions applied to the inside rear wheel. PTV and PTV Plus are also available for the 911 Carrera as an optional extra. To complement the Porsche 911 Carrera's new exterior, the Porsche designers created an interior, the architecture of which takes its cue from the Porsche Carrera GT.

The driver is now even more closely integrated with the cockpit thanks to the centre console rising up to the front with the high-mounted gear lever or gear selector located especially close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. The most important function and settings buttons for operating the vehicle are grouped in logical clusters on the centre console. Centrally located in the completely redeveloped dashboard, a larger seven-inch touch screen is used to control a rich array of functions. Naturally, the classic, established Porsche touches, such as the five round instruments with the centrally located rev counter and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel are also to be found in the new model. Also, both driver and front passenger are seated on newly developed sports seats with electric four-way adjustment. Additional sports seat versions with 14 and 18-way adjustment are also available as an option.

In recent years, tech companies and traditional automakers alike have been wary of any legislation that attempted to set parameters for self-driving deployments, and they have campaigned against much proposed legislation. General Motors, however, takes exception to the idea that autonomous testing is best served by an unregulated approach. 鈥淲e think legislators have an important role to play in making sure these vehicles are being put on the road in a safe way,鈥?said GM鈥檚 Lightsey. 鈥淲e disagree with the idea that states can just stand by and let people put vehicles on the road. Safety may be GM鈥檚 stated reason for supporting the legislation, but USC law professor Bryant Walker Smith sees an additional motivation. He says the company鈥檚 new eagerness to push legislation is a signal that it鈥檚 ready to deploy. 鈥淔or a long time, automakers have said this should be addressed at the federal level, and in some ways, that鈥檚 legitimate,鈥?he said. 鈥淏ut what it seems to say is, 鈥楧on鈥檛 do anything until we鈥檙e ready.鈥?At a point when a company figures out what it wants, that鈥檚 going to change.

In a new video, Porsche continues to tease its ambiguous Project Gold. The video above shows the dip painting process that gives the shell the same coating as modern Porsches. The latest teaser reveals the 993 body that forms the basis for Project Gold. The intakes in the rear help identify it as a Turbo S. Contrary to the design sketches in the original teaser Porsche released, it doesn't seem that the development team makes any modifications to the rear section of the roof. The Project Gold also sports a set of black, five-spoke wheels that have gold accenting the center and around the rim, which should give the Project Gold a rich, handsome look. Inside the cabin, Porsche fitted the seats with perforated leather for the center sections and fine-grained hides for the bolsters. Another touch of gold to be noted is in the stitching of the seams and the "Turbo" embroidery on the headrest.

The 2019 Porsche Cayman gets a new exterior color, Satin Metal Grey Metallic. Additionally, hatchback models at the moment are out there with the diesel engine. The 2019 Porsche Cayman acquired a 5-star overall security ranking from the NHTSA (out of a potential 5 stars). Imagine plaid seats in a European car with a liftgate and you might start spelling out the letters V-O-L in your mind. It is a signature trait on the Volkswagen Golf GTI, after all. But there鈥檚 another model from another automaker that鈥檚 bringing the option to America. When Volvo revealed the new V60 wagon, it showcased it with a plaid upholstery option. The assumption was that the option wouldn鈥檛 make it to America. But as AutoGuide points out that, the option has now been added to the US configurator. Called 鈥淏lond City Weave Textile Upholstery,鈥?it adds a modern plaid pattern to the seats and door panels, complemented by beige leather trim. Looks pretty stylish to us. Customers can alternatively opt for black, tan, medium brown, or dark brown leather. What鈥檚 more is that the tartan trim can only be had on the Momentum model. The luxed-up Inscription trim comes only with leather, though the choices broaden here to include perforated Nappa leather as well. What鈥檚 surprising is that the lower-level XC40 - the first model in the new entry-level series - can鈥檛 be had with the plaid option. Only leather. But the red hide looks rather tantalizing to our eyes. Nor can you get the tartan upholstery on the XC60, which is positioned alongside the V60 in Volvo鈥檚 latest mid-level lineup. Both the Momentum and Inscription versions of the new V60 come, for the time being, only in T6 AWD trim. The 2.0-liter turbo four generates 306 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. That鈥檚 in the US. Overseas, buyers can also choose from the lower-level T5 model, with the same engine producing 247 hp and 350 Nm of torque, or from a pair of diesels. Expect either or both of the T6 and T8 鈥淭win-Engine鈥?AWD hybrids to follow, with electrically assisted versions of that same engine kicking out a combined 250 hp and 350 Nm or 299 hp and 400 Nm.

Masterfully blending luxury, sport and utility, each of the fierce competitors is brimming with technology and innovation, not to mention volumes of excess poundage. Realizing that weight is the Achilles heel in this segment, the team at Porsche decided to get up off the sofa and do something about the problem. Porsche's engineering team didn't just accept minor liposuction, they axed the fat off. The weight was shed from the body structure and wheels (lots more aluminum), but most of it was lifted when the Cayenne received a new electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system. All told, Porsche shaved roughly 400 pounds off the Cayenne's curb weight (yes, the weight loss works out to 4,177 Twinkies). On the scale, the new Cayenne S weighs 4,553 pounds while the Cayenne Turbo is 4,784 pounds. For comparison, the BMW X5 xDrive48i spins the dial to 5,335 pounds and the flagship X5 M simply flattens the gauge at 5,368 pounds. The Mercedes-Benz ML550 is 4,883 pounds, while the ML63 AMG weighs in at 5,093 pounds.

Low mass translates to better performance. Porsche says the 2011 Cayenne S model needs just 5.6 seconds to hit 60 mph (top speed is 160 mph) while the Turbo rockets to 60 mph in a conservative 4.4 seconds (top speed: 172 mph). Fuel economy numbers have not been released, but the automaker says we can expect double-digit percentage improvements. As previously mentioned, our introduction to the all-new Porsche Cayenne was, interestingly enough, at the racetrack. This is no ordinary circuit - Barber Motorsports Park is a huge racing facility just outside Birmingham, Alabama. Opened in 2003, it features a beautifully manicured 16-turn, 2.3-mile road course that shames our West Coast facilities (if the Four Seasons hotel chain inexplicably dove into auto racing, this would be its inaugural facility). In addition to the very visible main circuit, hidden within the surrounding woods are countless off-road courses on the 740-acre property, which provided plenty of mud, ruts, hills and water obstacles.

And yes, it's home to the Porsche Sport Driving School. We've driven the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and BMW X5 M (and X6 M) on the track more than once. Although all were plenty fast, the excitement level of driving 2.5-ton SUVs, even those "race-prepared" models, around a road circuit is akin to shooting glass bottles with a Nerf gun. It simply doesn't get our adrenalin flowing. Minutes later, we are strapped into the bolstered front left seat of the Cayenne. Maneuvering through the corners, we expect body roll, squealing tires and understeer, but the Cayenne fails to deliver the bad news. Instead, it seems to land on its feet with the competence of a luxury sport sedan (it felt like we were driving a BMW 5 Series). Flat in the corners, the center of gravity feels two feet lower (it isn't) as we smoothly flow around the track. This is crazy; the Cayenne has forgotten that it is a sport utility vehicle.

New Porsche Cayenne Coupe

Porsche鈥檚 newest and sleekest SUV, the Cayenne Coupe, is on display in China at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, where it will remain until April 25. It comes with plenty of standard features, including a 2.16-square-meter panoramic fixed glass roof. Inside, it has room for up to 5 adults, but clients can order it in the four-seat configuration as well, at no extra cost. The contoured carbon roof and three lightweight sport packages are also available, among many other features. At launch, the Cayenne Coupe is available with two engines: the 3.0-liter V6 with 335 hp and 450 Nm of torque, and the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, rated at 542 hp and 770 Nm of torque in the Turbo model. The latter will get to 96 km/h in 3.7 seconds and has a 286 km/h top speed, while the former needs 5.7 seconds (5.6 sec with the lightweight sport packages) for and tops out at 243 km/h. Last year, Porsche sold more than 31,000 units of the Cayenne in China alone. This represented a 19 percent increase compared to 2017, and with the new Cayenne Coupe out, the automaker expects to reach new heights this year.

This design decision may sound minor, I realize, and possibly even inconvenient to some people. But to this driver, it creates a sort of feng shui where the only focus becomes the wheel, the shift lever, and the three pedals in the foot well. A word on those three pedals. It is a delight that in 2018 you can still buy a high-performance sports car with a manual transmission. So many of Porsche鈥檚 competitors limit their customers to technically superior (but decidedly less fun) dual-clutch automatics. The 911 GTS entertainment system comes with SiriusXM and Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay and everything else you鈥檇 expect from a modern vehicle. But reader, mea culpa: I never turned it on for a second. To do so would mask the glorious exhaust note radiating from the car鈥檚 rear. Porsche鈥檚 sport exhaust has a built-in silencer that engages while the car is in Normal driving mode. But switch to Sport mode and the full-throated 911 appears鈥攅very grunt, gurgle, pop, and crackle is unleashed. It is a riot, if not a tad obnoxious while driving through residential areas. Use at your own discretion. Horsepower is a respectable 450, and Porsche claims the car will go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, 3.5 seconds flat with the PDK transmission (one suspects they are being a tad conservative with these numbers). But let鈥檚 be honest: This is a car for which technical specifications matter little when you鈥檙e out on the road and fully engaged. Equipped with optional rear-axle steering, my GTS took the challenging corners of New York鈥檚 Bear Mountain with aplomb.

One thing you鈥檙e not short of with the new Ford Focus is variety. In total there are 88 different models available when it comes to matching bodystyle with your desired trim, gearbox and engine. The model we have here, however, could well be the pick of that line-up. The variant in question is the more practical Estate in well-equipped ST-Line X trim. We鈥檝e already driven the 1.5-litre diesel model, but under the bonnet of this car sits Ford鈥檚 new 180bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol. To drive out of the dealership it鈥檒l cost you 拢26,750 or around 拢370 per month on a standard PCP deal. One reason why it hits the spot, even before you get behind the wheel, is the way it looks. The Focus is a rather spec-sensitive car; it can look a bit dowdy and dull in some of the lower trims - especially in one of the less inspiring colours. However, the more assertive styling on this ST-Line X model means it looks the part.

The driving experience, aided no end by the punchy 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, matches the Ford鈥檚 good looks. From low revs the engine pulls strongly and smoothly, without the spiky power delivery you鈥檇 usually associate with low capacity, turbocharged engines. The snappy six-speed manual gearbox and steering are both perfectly weighted, while the seating position is spot on. It allows you to really make the most of the Focus鈥檚 sweet chassis and brilliant handling balance. That鈥檚 perhaps not the main priority from someone looking to buy a sensible and spacious family car, but it clearly demonstrates Ford has cut no corners when to comes to designing such a capable all-rounder. Fuel economy is also pretty reasonable. On a long motorway run you can match Ford鈥檚 claim of 42mpg. But around town, and day-to-day, we averaged 36mpg over 700 miles of mixed driving. Admittedly, the Focus doesn鈥檛 have the largest boot in its class. You鈥檒l get 575 litres with the rear bench in place and 1,653 litres with everything folded flat. However, there are only a few litres difference between the Ford and the Volkswagen Golf Estate, so in reality you won鈥檛 notice it.

2019 Porsche 911 997 Carrera 4 & 4S

The new version offers significantly more engine, braking and handling performance than its highly respected predecessor. For the first time, the model will be available with two engine options. It also features wider bodywork, to accommodate larger rear tires, and an enhanced Porsche Stability Management system designed to provide shorter stopping distances and optimal braking. A direct descendant of the famed all-wheel drive Porsche 959, the 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe is offered with two engine variations. The most striking exterior feature of the new Carrera 4 Coupes is their more muscular rear bodywork. To fit the Carrera 4s 295/35ZR 18 and the Carrera 4S 305/30 ZR 19 larger and higher performing standard rear tires, the rear fenders are 1戮 inches (44 mm) wider. The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system on the new Carrera 4S has two new functions to enhance braking. To eliminate the air gap between the pads and the disk and shorten stopping distances, the brake system is pre-filled prior to full brake application. For optimal braking, the hydraulic pump builds up extra pressure to bring all the wheels into the ABS range if the driver depresses the brake pedal quickly but not forcefully. As with the previous version, the Carrera 4s all-wheel drive system has a multi-disk viscous coupling that transfers between 5 and 40 percent of the driving force permanently to the front wheels. This feature provides excellent handling in curves, straight-line stability at high speeds, and improved traction on slippery roads. To further enhance handling, for the first time the Carrera 4 is available with the new Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. The optional Sport Chrono Plus package is also offered as an option on both models. For sportier performance, it modifies the engine management characteristics and the control behavior of the PSM and PASM systems. 127,500 CDN for the Carrera 4S Coupe.

BMW has unveiled its new i8 Roadster safety car. It was unwrapped on the eve of this year鈥檚 E-Prix at the 鈥淵acht Club de Monaco鈥?and, like its sister model the previous i8 Coupe safety car, it features a few performance upgrades, tweaked styling and a wild livery. BMW claims its new i8 Roadster is the world鈥檚 first open-topped safety car. Performance modifications for the i8 Roadster safety car are relatively minor, stretching to a set of M Carbon Ceramic brakes, an FIA-approved roll bar and new front splitter and rear wing, which BMW claims improves the i8鈥檚 downforce. It also features a uniquely shortened windscreen, which lowers the car鈥檚 centre of gravity by 15 millimetres. The i8 Roadster鈥檚 drivetrain is unchanged from the road car, meaning the rear wheels are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, while the front axle is driven by an electric motor. Power and torque figures are 369bhp and 570Nm respectively and, thanks to its reduced weight, both its 0-62mph time and top speed should be improved. The i8 safety car was developed and built as an out-of-hours project by BMW i division, and marks the German firm鈥檚 fifth season as an official vehicle partner of the Formula E racing series. As well as this new safety car, the race series uses a BMW i3 as its race director car, a BMW 530e for its medical car and a BMW X5 40e as its rescue car.

2019 Porsche Macan Vs 2019 Porsche Macan

What are the differences between the 2019 Porsche Macan and 2018 Porsche Macan? While the 2019 and 2018 Porche Macan models share similar performance features, the 2019 Macan includes some new features that aren鈥檛 found in the 2018 model. New to the 2019 Macan is a GT sports steering wheel, Traffic Jam Assist with adaptive cruise control, standard LED lights, and a three-dimensional LED taillight strip. Both the 2018 and 2019 models feature an 11-inch touchscreen display to help you stay connected each time you get behind the wheel. You can fill your vehicle with crystal-clear sound thanks to the available BOSE® Surround Sound System and Burnmester® High-End Surround Sound System options. The Porche Connect app allows you to control the music streaming in your Macan so you hear exactly what you鈥檙e in the mood for. The 2019 Macan is available in two trim styles - Base and S - while the 2018 model is available in 5 different styles - Base, Sport Edition, S, GTS, and Turbo.

Beneath the skin of the up! Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii cousins at launch in 2012. All three use the VW Group鈥檚 NSF (New Small Family) platform, which has MacPherson struts and a torsion-beam rear axle, like the Kia. The Volkswagen鈥檚 engine has 10bhp less than the Picanto here, at 89bhp, but the cars are otherwise very similar in design, with a five-speed manual transmission and five-door body style. 拢400, but that鈥檚 a small price to pay for the extra practicality of the additional doors. Sadly, the back windows are pop-out only, but you get electric windows in the Kia. The rest of the interior is impressive, though. The cloth seats are comfortable and compare well with the artificial leather in the Kia, while the dashboard looks more upmarket, too, thanks to its cleaner design. Key touch points, such as the steering wheel and gearlever, also feel slightly more premium.

But this top-spec up! 鈥檛 as well equipped as its competitor. It does without a touchscreen display completely, instead featuring a USB port and a holder for a smartphone. For most buyers that will be fine, but it means there鈥檚 no sat-nav for those people without a compatible phone. 15-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, Bluetooth and DAB radio, but it鈥檚 missing several items that are standard on the Kia; AEB, a reversing camera and cruise control are all optional. But then it鈥檚 cheaper and even after adding these features it still costs less. The driving experience has always been the VW鈥檚 strong point and it feels like a very polished product. Both the steering and gearshift are precise and light, while there鈥檚 plenty of grip, so it鈥檚 great fun whether you鈥檙e heading down a country road or just nipping to the shops. The ride is good for a small car and the up!

The suspension set-up is comfortable and only the wind and road noise are a hint that this is still a cheap car, because otherwise you might mistake the VW for a more expensive model from behind the wheel. It鈥檚 quieter than the Picanto and thanks to the turbo torque, refinement and decent tech, like the Kia, we wouldn鈥檛 shy away from a long journey in the up! The thrummy three-cylinder engine is another highlight, because it provides punchy performance and combines that with an entertaining soundtrack. But at our test track the VW trailed the Kia. The 0-60mph sprint took 10 seconds, which was 0.9 seconds behind the Picanto, and the up! 30-70mph through the gears as well; it posted a time of 10.8 seconds to the Kia鈥檚 9.6 seconds. The Volkswagen took 13.4 seconds to go from 50-70mph in fifth gear, while the Kia needed 10.3 seconds, which means the Picanto is more at home on the motorway, although the up!

At 251 litres, the Volkswagen鈥檚 boot is slightly smaller than its rival鈥檚, but neither car is really spacious when it comes to luggage capacity. A total of 959 litres with the rear seats folded down is helpful, although it still trails the Picanto here as well. The amount of space in the cabin is the VW鈥檚 strong point, because adults can easily fit in each of the four seats; headroom and legroom are both better than in the Kia. It feels lighter and more spacious inside, too, thanks to the design of the dashboard and the larger window area. However, there鈥檚 less in-cabin storage in the German hatch, because the Kia features larger cup-holders and a bigger front cubby, plus storage space by the handbrake that鈥檚 missing in the VW. Volkswagen came in fifth overall in our Driver Power 2018 satisfaction survey, which is a strong result. But its dealers have some way to go; they finished 18th, while Kia鈥檚 were seventh out of 28 marques.

This small SUV鈥檚 roofline slopes to the rear, producing a contour with with high aerodynamic quality. Everywhere you go, you can expect to make a grand statement.

With its front-wheel drive platform, the CLA may not be the powersliding four-door coupe that enthusiasts yearn for, but it鈥檚 still a big moneymaker for Mercedes-Benz. It鈥檚 so popular that the German automaker will soon bring it back for its second generation, which will follow hot on the heels of the recently unveiled 2019 A-Class. Very similar to the new-gen compact hatchback, according to XTomi鈥檚 rendering, albeit with a few tweaks made here and there. The rendering looks pretty much spot-on, but it remains to be seen if the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA will actually look like this. Underpinned by the same architecture as the new A-Class, the next CLA will continue to be offered with standard front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will be an option. It will be powered by a host of small engines, some of them carried with a few improvements from the current iteration, and some shared with Renault, and it should to be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions.

With a higher displacement and electronically controlled fuel and ignition, the 3.2 Carrera was both faster and more fuel efficient. The engine capacity was raised to 3164cc by employing the 95mm bore from the previous SC model along with the 74.4mm stroke of the 1978 Turbo 3.3's crankshaft. Higher domed pistons beefed up the compression ratio to 10.3:1 for cars on the European market, and 9.5:1 in cars destined for the shores of the United States. The Model 911 3.2 Carrera was available in three basic models, the coupe, Targa and cabriolet. Porsche also produced 4 optional limited production versions. The first option was introduced in 1984 as the M491 which was called the 'Supersport' in the UK, and commonly referred to as the 'Turbo-look'. The M491 option closely resembled the Model 930 Turbo with it's exterior styling that included flared wheel arches and the classic rear spoiler. It also featured wider wheels, a stiffer suspension and the superior turbo braking system. In 1985 a very exclusive 255HP version was produced in Italy for the European market called the model Carrera ST. The ST stands for 'Senza Turbo' which translates to 'without turbo'.

Only ten of these cars were built, all ten were painted Grand Prix White and came with either red or blue 'telephone dial' style wheels. There was a 'Carrera ST' decal in either red or blue on each side of the car, a 'Carrera ST' logo on the duck tail and '3.2' on the back grill. From August 1987 to September 1989 Porsche produced the model 911 Carrera Club Sport, or 911 Carrera CS. A total of 340 of these cars were built for both the US and European markets. They were built specifically for club racing and included a blueprinted engine with hollow intake valves, a higher rev limit, spartan interiors and zero power options - in an effort to save weight, of course. The Club Sports were ordered in a variety of different colors, some with decals and some without; however, all of them are identifiable by the letters "SP" stamped on the crankcase and cylinder head. And finally, for the first 6 months of 1989, option M503, the model 911 Speedster was produced. It was a 2 seater, low-roof version of the Cabriolet, reminiscent of the model 356 Speedster of the 50's. A total of 2,104 of these were built between January and June. 89 Speedsters are highly sought-after classics whose value rose quickly after production ended. When all was said and done the model 911 3.2 Carrera did not disappoint. It not only lived up to the standards set by the model 911SC that it replaced, it exceeded all expectations. Now a much sought-after classic car for Porsche enthusiasts, the model 911 3.2 Carrera was the last version of the original 911 series. The model 911's produced after 1989 all came with completely new exterior styling as well as new brake, suspension and electronic technology.

This is the Hyundai i10 Play: a recent addition to the city car鈥檚 range that aims to breathe new life into the brand鈥檚 Volkswagen up! Toyota Aygo challenger. Having been around since 2013, does the improved kit list do enough to make it worth considering? Priced from 拢11,195, the Play costs roughly the same as the existing SE, but it鈥檚 treated to a heap of extra kit to make it a more desirable option. Two features, one cosmetic, one practical, are lifted from the top-spec Premium SE trim, to add to the Play鈥檚 appeal. On the outside that means the Play rides on a set of 15-inch alloy wheels, while inside it benefits from a seven-inch infotainment system. Not only does the touchscreen offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, but also built-in satellite navigation. The new special edition model adds a few more extras unique to the i10. The Play鈥檚 door mirrors are finished in a contrasting gloss black paint, while there鈥檚 unique badging on the B-pillars.

2019 Porsche Cayenne

Though critics have knocked the fact that the high-end elegant car maker has been dabbling in SUVs, they might close their lips after seeing the new 2011 Porsche Cayenne. One of the crucial evident change is the drive. In former models, the critics were correct, Porsche's SUVs were heavy and didn't have the graceful drive that Porsche owners need. But they have learned lots since their first trial in 2003, and have even gone leaps and bounds from last year's model. This year's model is lighter and much more agile than ever. A 400 pound drop from previous models can contribute to the overall more Porsche-feel. How did they accomplish this unbelievable Biggest Loser like weight reduction? They literally have shown their innovation by being able to cut pounds everywhere. First off, they've used a wide-spread quantity of aluminum in the doors, hood and chassis. Then they went on to the engine, park break, as well as the tires? I had no idea that tires could be made lighter, but somehow they achieved it. The Cayenne's towing capacity is enough for all your kid's friends and their lacrosse equipment (it gets maxed out at about 6,000 pounds).

The V-6 engine makes is just enough car for those beginning drivers, which makes the Cayenne a great SUV to pass down for a Sweet 16 gift-- when the time comes. But in case you are more into saving the world by day and coming home to the family at night, you might want to try the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid. Yes, that's right, it comes in Hybrid. For all those out of the loop-this will be Porsche's third year making the Cayenne S Hybrid. Coming from an avid Cayenne consumer, the look for these eco savers has only gotten better from the 2009 debut. Now the look- and this goes for all the 2011 Cayenne models- is sleek and also sexy? I wasn't sure if an SUV could be considered sexy, but this transformation is something like The Swan (you know, that reality show that used plastic surgery to turn "ugly ducklings" into "The Swan"). Among the main advantage of going hybrid would be the fuel economy which is about 22/25. The 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid can go from 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds, which is pretty good. The neatest thing about this model is that it has a parallel hybrid system which means that there is no perception of the various drive modes (gas, gas and electric, and electric). What does this mean for the owner of this hybrid? The best place to go get one is at Park Place, they are friendly and have great customer service.

2019 Porsche Macan

With the incredibly engaging Macan, Porsche proves that a crossover can drive like a sports car. Its spellbinding performance and unflappable poise are the primary reasons we named the 2018 model to our 10Best Trucks and SUVs list. Underneath its curvaceous shell are two available engines鈥攁 base 248-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and a turbocharged V-6 making 348 horsepower in the S model. Every Macan is equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Sure, some competitors are more affordable and practical, but they don't cast a spell on their drivers in the same way that the Porsche does. It truly sets the bar for what crossovers can be. What's New for 2019? The 2019 Porsche Macan is updated for this year and features refreshed exterior styling that includes updated front and rear bumpers, new taillamps that span the width of the liftgate, and new wheel designs. If it were going in our driveway, we'd pick the Macan S. It's quick, fun to drive, and offers the best performance in the current 2019 Macan lineup.

Interior trim varies only a little from the entry-level Macan to the Macan S, so most of the cost bump between models is associated with changes to the powertrain and other mechanical equipment. Standard features in the Macan S include a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a 10-speaker audio system, LED headlamps, and all-wheel drive. Likes: Quick as some two-door Porsches, sharp-shifting gearbox, responsive brake pedal. Dislikes: It's not quite a sports car. Quickness is important in a crossover with sporting intentions, but we wouldn't be nearly as impressed with the Macan if it weren't for its all-around competence on the road. The ride is wonderfully smooth and carefully controlled, and it's rare for a jolt from the road to make its way up through the cabin. The Macan's tenacious attitude in corners makes it feel stable and planted. The steering is a little lighter than in Porsche's sports cars, but still hyperaccurate and pleasantly tactile. You can drive this Macan hard, and it responds like a top-ranked sports sedan. The Macan's EPA ratings are very similar to those of its competitors, although a few rivals have better numbers on the highway.

Once we get the updated Macan and Macan S into our garage for testing, we'll send both on our 200-mile real-world fuel-economy test route to see how the EPA's ratings hold up under normal operating conditions. Likes: Upscale features and materials are available鈥攆or a price; more practical than Porsche's sports cars. Dislikes: Shrunken back seat, lacks standard luxuries, no Android Auto, limited carry-on capacity. The Macan's standard interior fittings are a disappointment in a crossover of this price and provenance, and it's expensive to outfit one in a manner that befits the Porsche crest. There's also less space for back-seat passengers in the Macan than in most competitors. The Macan's power-adjustable seats for the driver and front-seat passenger are the only pieces of standard interior equipment that feel even remotely luxurious. 2230 that Porsche asks for outlining just the front air vents in leather feels like price gouging, even for Porsche. Porsche's infotainment system can be had with all manner of high-tech features.

But, as with nearly everything on the Macan's equipment list, enjoying those features will cost you. USB ports and 12-volt outlets are sprinkled throughout the cabin, so driver and passengers alike should be able to keep their devices fully charged. With the standard mobile Wi-Fi package on board, the family data plan might be able to escape a road trip unscathed, too. A puny cargo hold and small interior cubbies make the Macan one of the least practical vehicles in this segment. But when has buying a Porsche ever been a rational choice? We fit six carry-on bags in the cargo bay and 16 with the rear seats folded, which should be enough for most people. The Macan hasn't been tested by either crash-test agency (nor has any other Porsche currently on sale, for that matter). The Macan can be had with a wide array of driver-assistance technology, but almost none of it is standard.

To that end, the steel forks that connect the spring and damper to the front-axle carrier were replaced with stiffer aluminum units that reduce unsprung weight slightly. The widths for 19- and 21-inch wheels increase a half-inch at the front for better turn-in, and it has newly developed tires. The Macan S gets slightly larger front rotors than before, while the actual brake pedal hardware has been redesigned for better feel. As before, the base Macan uses the same Audi A4-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which makes 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Previously, the Macan S used a Porsche-developed 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, but now, it's been replaced with an Audi-sourced single-turbo 3.0-liter V6 making 348 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. It's the same basic engine found in the base Cayenne and Panamera, as well as the Audi S4, S5, and SQ5, though it gets some software changes. Both engines are paired with Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch, which has been retuned to offer quicker shifts, and a fully variable all-wheel drive system.

Porsche 992 GT3 [spy Shot]

A prototype of the 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 has just been spied testing at Monza and it sounds very much like it鈥檚 running a naturally-aspirated flat-six, just like the current model. It鈥檚 impossible to know if this prototype is indeed for the next-generation GT3, the next GT3 RS, or potentially some other GT model. What we do know for sure is that it is a 992-generation tester and it doesn鈥檛 have a turbocharged engine. That alone should get enthusiasts very excited. The prototype filmed testing is easy to pick from other 992-gen cars not only be its engine note, but also by its new aerodynamic parts, including a curiously-shaped rear wing. Also visible are the two central tailpipes characteristic of a GT3 model. Beyond this vehicle鈥檚 use of a naturally-aspirated engine, it鈥檚 also obviously been outfitted with a new-and-improved PDK transmission. Considering the up-roar caused by Porsche ditching a manual option for the 991 GT3 and re-introducing it for the 991.2, we fully expect a stick-shift to be offered with the 992 GT3. If the new Porsche 911 GT3 does indeed use an all-motor flat-six for production, power will only rise incrementally from the 493 hp delivered by the current car. It鈥檚 also worth noting that this video isn鈥檛 confirmation that the finished car will use the same engine as this prototype. Porsche may still be undecided between a naturally-aspirated mill and a turbo鈥檇 one and could be testing both.

Is the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid a Good SUV? Yes, the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is an excellent SUV. Should I Buy the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid? The Cayenne E-Hybrid makes a great choice for buyers who crave engaging performance, and it brings a lot to the table beyond its speed and agility. However, the Cayenne Hybrid sports one of the highest starting prices in the class, and it lags behind the competition in some practical aspects such as cargo capacity. So while it's a great SUV, this Porsche may not be right for everyone. Interested shoppers should also check out the Tesla Model X and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Should I Buy a New or Used Porsche Cayenne Hybrid? After a full redesign, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid marks the first model year of its new generation. For 2019, Porsche bumps the Cayenne E-Hybrid's horsepower to 455 (up from the 2018 model's 416). Also, the new model provides much more cargo space behind the rear seats. The 2019 Cayenne Hybrid comes standard with several formerly optional features including a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, navigation, and Apple CarPlay.

It also comes with a much larger touch screen than the previous generation. New available features include night vision assist and a surround-view camera. You'll likely save money (possibly thousands) by shopping for a used Cayenne Hybrid, but you won't get the benefits of the vehicle's redesign. If you're considering an older model, first read our 2018 Cayenne Hybrid review to help you decide if you can live without the 2019 model's extra power, space, and features. We don鈥檛 base our car reviews on our personal opinions. Instead, we combine the findings of professional test drivers with data such as reliability ratings and safety scores to give you a complete overview of every vehicle we rank. U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks, and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years鈥?worth of auto industry experience combined. To keep our reviews unbiased, we don鈥檛 accept expensive gifts or trips from car companies, and an outside company manages our advertising.

How Much Does the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Cost? 80,000. On the bright side, it only comes in one trim, so you don't have the crazy price gap between the least and most expensive models like you do with some rivals. Check out our U.S. News Best Price Program for great savings at your local Porsche dealer. Which Is Better: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid or Tesla Model X? The Tesla Model X is an all-electric SUV that might be the most athletic SUV on the market, full stop. It is extremely fast, gets terrific mpg-e ratings, and handles winding roads with ease. And unlike many electric vehicles, the Model X carries a range of well over 200 miles, so you're not limited to short trips. Inside, the Model X doesn't look as well-built as the Cayenne Hybrid, but it offers a third row of seats, and it has more cargo space. Price-wise, these two are similar. These are both good vehicles, but the Cayenne Hybrid's superior interior gives it the edge. Which Is Better: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid or Mercedes-Benz GLE? The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain that's nearly as powerful as the Cayenne Hybrid's.

When it comes to handling, the Porsche wins, hands down. Inside, however, the GLE stands out for having possibly the nicest cabin in the class. It's spacious and comfortable, and there's more cargo space than in the Porsche. Both SUVs have long features lists. These two both stand out, but for different reasons, and you should go with the one that suits your priorities: the Porsche for driving enjoyment or the Mercedes for interior opulence. How Many People Does the Cayenne Hybrid Seat? While some class rivals have three rows of seats and fit seven or eight people, the Cayenne Hybrid only seats five across two rows. Wherever you sit, you'll be happy. Both rows of seats are comfortable and spacious, and three adults can ride in the back without issue. The Cayenne E-Hybrid features two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors. Inside, the Cayenne Hybrid looks good and is undeniably well-built. Some class rivals may still stand above this Porsche, but you'll have little to complain about while you're sitting in it. Cargo space counts as a weakness for the Cayenne Hybrid since most class rivals provide more room.

My son is the buyer, consumer who bought a 2019 GTI S - I have been helping him work through this mess. My son is 25 and knows how to drive manual cars for 9 years. I experienced the stalls as well as I was test driving. I have 35 years of manual car driving experience, I have never owned anything except manual cars. Over the past 10 years, I have owned a 2001 Audi A4, 2003 Porsche 911 turbo, 2013 VW GTI, 2016 Porsche Cayman GTS. I have done numerous driving events at Road Atlanta and local Autocross. I have never seen an issue like this GTI stalling thing - really amazing to me. On March 30, my son bought a brand new 2019 GTI S, manual with 9 miles on the odometer. Within 2 days of driving, the car started experiencing stalling issues. Like most people, he thought he may have done something wrong or that he was unfamiliar with the clutch.

Dealer claims they checked VW service bulletins and whatever they use to research problems - claim there was zero documetation about a similar case, zero guidance. No fault codes were present. Over the couse of the next month, the dealer was also able to reproduce the stalls. They tried to replace a crankshaft sensor, replaced the engine wiring harness at the request of a regional tech. As the dealer test drove the car, ususally 40-75 miles each time, they could no longer reproduce the stalls. Each time they forced us to pickup the car - we demanded a tech test drive with us before we would accept the car back. Each time we test drove at low speed simulating stop and go traffic driving - the car stalled. We proved the stalls 3x with service techs in the car after each attempted fix. VW Corporate bought back the car, that is being finalized now. I have documentation to support all of this.

The 2019 Macan benefits from standard LED head and taillights, with the latter adopting the wraparound look seen on the Cayenne and Panamera. There have also been little tweaks made around the body to give the vehicle a more athletic look. In particular, the front has been made to look wider and lower. The designers also added new 20- and 21-inch wheel patterns similar to those found on Porsche's sports cars. There are also the new colors Mamba Green Metallic, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Miami Blue, and Chalk.

The base engine in the 2019 Macan is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 generating 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and will spirit the Macan to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, or just 6.1 seconds when using the launch control function of the available Sport Chrono package. Top speed is 142 mph. Specifications for other Macan models are yet to be announced for the 2019 model year. For 2018, the Macan S came with 340 hp, the Macan GTS with 360 hp, the Macan Turbo with 400 hp, and a Macan Turbo with Performance Package with 440 hp. Porsche said it tuned the chassis of the 2019 Macan for improved handling and comfort. New tire designs are also said to improve dynamic performance, and just like on Porsche's sports cars the tires now feature a staggered arrangement with a wider pair used at the rear compared to the front. For the interior, the biggest change is a new 10.9-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system, which features customizable menus. The system includes improved voice activation as well as navigation with real-time traffic updates all as standard. One of the key elements of this system is the Here Cloud connection, which offers swarm-based traffic data. There's also a new Offroad Precision app, which off-road enthusiasts can use to record off-road driving experiences. Apple CarPlay is available but not Android Auto. Porsche also upgraded the Macan's suite of electronic driver aids. Included is a new Traffic Jam Assist that handles acceleration and braking at speeds of up to 40 mph. It can also handle mild steering functions during slow-moving traffic. Finally, Porsche has made available its GT steering wheel with integrated driving modes selector. The order books for the 2019 Macan are currently open.

This is partly why the car sits up high and partly why it鈥檚 so heavy, at 2,490kg. Weight is the enemy of efficiency, so this seems slightly at odds with the e-tron鈥檚 ethos. The car uses two electric motors, one on each axle, for a total of 402bhp and a different take on Audi鈥檚 quattro four-wheel drive. Like pretty much every electric car, there鈥檚 a single-speed automatic gearbox. Air suspension is also standard, unlike on the Jag. It鈥檚 linked to the car鈥檚 drive mode select set-up, offering Offroad, Allroad, Comfort, Auto, Efficiency and Dynamic. This is integrated in the lower of the two touchscreens. It鈥檚 an 8.6-inch unit that mostly controls the climate settings. The upper 10.1-inch screen is used for the infotainment, while there鈥檚 a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit, too. It鈥檚 nice tech, but not very different from that found in more conventional Audis, with positives and negatives to this. You get lots of kit even in this base spec, although that鈥檚 a relative term.

This entry-level e-tron does without the car鈥檚 trademark virtual door mirrors, but it has nav, phone integration and lots of safety equipment. There are also 20-inch alloys, climate and adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, heated leather seats, LED lights, DAB, wireless charging and keyless operation. It鈥檚 all integrated into a cabin that鈥檚 executed with the usual quality we鈥檝e come to expect from an Audi. Materials and build quality are good. EVs are characterised by their relaxing driving experience. An instant and fat swell of torque means many are smooth and serene, and sharp, responsive performance is another common trait. While the Audi is definitely relaxed, acceleration isn鈥檛 anywhere near as impressive as in the I-Pace. It鈥檚 partly due to the weight. The Audi is very heavy, and this dulls the punch when you hit the throttle. It鈥檚 far from slow, but it could be more rapid. It took 5.4 seconds to sprint from 0-60mph compared with 4.4 seconds for the Jag, but EVs are as much about easily exploitable acceleration at any speeds.

At least the e-tron has enough urgency here; it took 1.7 seconds to go between 30 and 50mph, although this was still slower than the I-Pace. It鈥檚 not as quick, then, and also not as comfortable. Despite the e-tron鈥檚 standard air suspension, on these 拢950 21-inch wheels the Audi鈥檚 alloys rebound aggressively over harsh bumps. It鈥檚 more settled on the motorway, where the car鈥檚 weight means the damping feels smoother at higher speeds. But then its near-2.5-tonne bulk means it鈥檚 not very agile. The steering has even less life than in most other Audis and you sense the weight trying to tear the e-tron off your chosen line. Special mention should go to the torque-vectoring system, though; this shuffles power to help it turn better. You can feel it working unobtrusively to improve the car鈥檚 handling. Thanks to where the e-tron鈥檚 battery is located in the chassis, there鈥檚 a useful 660 litres of boot space.
