This design decision may sound minor, I realize, and possibly even inconvenient to some people. But to this driver, it creates a sort of feng shui where the only focus becomes the wheel, the shift lever, and the three pedals in the foot well. A word on those three pedals. It is a delight that in 2018 you can still buy a high-performance sports car with a manual transmission. So many of Porsche鈥檚 competitors limit their customers to technically superior (but decidedly less fun) dual-clutch automatics. The 911 GTS entertainment system comes with SiriusXM and Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay and everything else you鈥檇 expect from a modern vehicle. But reader, mea culpa: I never turned it on for a second. To do so would mask the glorious exhaust note radiating from the car鈥檚 rear. Porsche鈥檚 sport exhaust has a built-in silencer that engages while the car is in Normal driving mode. But switch to Sport mode and the full-throated 911 appears鈥攅very grunt, gurgle, pop, and crackle is unleashed. It is a riot, if not a tad obnoxious while driving through residential areas. Use at your own discretion. Horsepower is a respectable 450, and Porsche claims the car will go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, 3.5 seconds flat with the PDK transmission (one suspects they are being a tad conservative with these numbers). But let鈥檚 be honest: This is a car for which technical specifications matter little when you鈥檙e out on the road and fully engaged. Equipped with optional rear-axle steering, my GTS took the challenging corners of New York鈥檚 Bear Mountain with aplomb.





One thing you鈥檙e not short of with the new Ford Focus is variety. In total there are 88 different models available when it comes to matching bodystyle with your desired trim, gearbox and engine. The model we have here, however, could well be the pick of that line-up. The variant in question is the more practical Estate in well-equipped ST-Line X trim. We鈥檝e already driven the 1.5-litre diesel model, but under the bonnet of this car sits Ford鈥檚 new 180bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol. To drive out of the dealership it鈥檒l cost you 拢26,750 or around 拢370 per month on a standard PCP deal. One reason why it hits the spot, even before you get behind the wheel, is the way it looks. The Focus is a rather spec-sensitive car; it can look a bit dowdy and dull in some of the lower trims - especially in one of the less inspiring colours. However, the more assertive styling on this ST-Line X model means it looks the part.





The driving experience, aided no end by the punchy 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, matches the Ford鈥檚 good looks. From low revs the engine pulls strongly and smoothly, without the spiky power delivery you鈥檇 usually associate with low capacity, turbocharged engines. The snappy six-speed manual gearbox and steering are both perfectly weighted, while the seating position is spot on. It allows you to really make the most of the Focus鈥檚 sweet chassis and brilliant handling balance. That鈥檚 perhaps not the main priority from someone looking to buy a sensible and spacious family car, but it clearly demonstrates Ford has cut no corners when to comes to designing such a capable all-rounder. Fuel economy is also pretty reasonable. On a long motorway run you can match Ford鈥檚 claim of 42mpg. But around town, and day-to-day, we averaged 36mpg over 700 miles of mixed driving. Admittedly, the Focus doesn鈥檛 have the largest boot in its class. You鈥檒l get 575 litres with the rear bench in place and 1,653 litres with everything folded flat. However, there are only a few litres difference between the Ford and the Volkswagen Golf Estate, so in reality you won鈥檛 notice it.
