Computer/Controls - SAM Control Unit Diagnosis Procedure

Date: December 7, 2010

Order No.: S-B-54.21/235

Group: 54

SUBJECT: MY-All, Models 204, 207, 212

SAM Control Unit Diagnosis Procedure

As of DVD 11/2010, diagnosis in the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) and rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay

module (N10/2) has changed along with the inspection process.

Diagnosis Procedure

1. Perform quick test.

2. Run the test conducted in the quick test in each SAM control unit.

NOTE:

A fault code or symptom can be used to enter the test.

3. A guided diagnosis is then conducted.

4. If at the end of each test step the SAM control unit is deemed defective, replace the SAM control unit.

Submit control unit log along with the defective control unit through QEC inspection channel. The warranty inspection checks if the diagnosis result

confirms that a replacement of the SAM control unit is justified. If this is not the case, or if the diagnosis printouts are not available, the warranty

claim may be rejected. The same applies to requested parts.

Reason for change

Complaint:

The COMAND unit does not start or the COMAND display remains dark. The COMAND unit cannot be operated.

Note:

The problem disappears after a lengthy idle period (>6h) or after interrupting the power supply (circuit 30).

Cause:

Software release of COMAND control unit (A4013)

Remedy:

1. Disconnect the power supply of the COMAND unit for a short period of time (approx. 1 mm). Following this the problem is rectified, but may

reoccur.

2. Perform a software update of the COMAND unit (A4013).

Note:

Replacing the COMAND unit does not remedy the problem!

The complaint is permanently rectified with the following software updates:

^ For vehicle models 207, 212, 218 with code 088: Software update of COMAND control unit (A4013) to software release 12/47 00 or higher

Suspension - Vehicle Drops At Rear Axle After Sitting

Vehicle drops at rear axle, vehicles with

Design group 32.22 Air suspension

Date 01-25-2013

Model 218 with air suspension (SA code 489) up to VIN

218 ### ## 055091

Reason for change Validity updated

Complaint:

The vehicle drops at the rear axle after standing for a long time.

Cause:

Damaged sealing rings in the air suspension element on the rear axle can lead to a microscopic leak and thus to a gradual loss of air.

Attachments

Remedy:

Check for water in the system:

1. Unscrew AIRmatic pressure line between compressor and valve unit.

2010 Mercedes Benz E 550 Sedan (212.072) V8-5.5L (273.971) Page 402

If water runs out (Figure 1) or if water droplets are visible at the pressure line connection of the compressor or valve unit (Figure 2), the

compressor, the valve unit and the air filter of the intake hose must be replaced.

If no water is visible, actuate compressor. If water runs out of the connection on the compressor, replace the compressor, the valve unit and the

air filter of the intake hose.

If the components are replaced due to water in the system, this is to be encoded in the warranty and goodwill case as consequential damage for

the air spring bellows.

(Observe WIS instructions.)

2. Unscrew air lines from valve block to air springs on the side of the air suspension strut and blow out with compressed air.

3. Replace both air springs on the rear axle.

Note:

Since the end of December 2011 modified air spring bellows are available with which the problem can be permanently eliminated - see part

numbers below. Even if one or both air spring bellows have been replaced in the past and the vehicle has started to drop at the rear axle

again, the cause of the problem is still the air spring bellows. We are unaware of any other damage mechanism/focus. In this case both air

spring bellows must be replaced again.

Possible check for confirming the complaint 'vehicle drops':

1. Park up the vehicle and after approx. 2 hours, when the vehicle has cooled down, measure the vehicle level at the rear axle on both sides from the

wheel center to the fender.

2. Leave the vehicle standing overnight in the same place and next day check the vehicle level at both wheels. If the vehicle level has dropped by

more than 20 mm, both air suspension elements must be replaced.

Ordering Notes for Electrohydraulic Control Unit

The following information clarifies how to determine the correct electrohydraulic control units.

A. Procedure 1a

1. Diagnosis on the vehicle is possible:

2. To determine the correct EHS part number, the currently installed EHS should first be read out with the Star diagnosis.

a. Xentry Diagnostics:

^ via the path "Control units view" - "Current quick test" - "Fully integrated transmission control" - "EHS part number".

^ Ordering the new EHS with this read out part number.

b. DAS:

^ "Quick test">"EGS > electronic transmission control serial number".

^ Ordering the new EHS with this read out serial number.

B. Procedure 1b

Diagnosis on the vehicle is no longer possible, as the control unit no longer responds. Therefore, the number must be read off directly by the

EHS and the ordering process is started with this number.

C. Procedure 2

1. Read out part number A 220 270 14 06

2. This part number was replaced by A 220 270 13 06 or by A 220 270 18 06, depending on the vehicle model range.

For this the following must be observed for correct ordering:

Campaign No. 2010030010, April 2010

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT: Model 212, Model Year 2010

Update Front SAM Parameters

This Service Campaign has been initiated because Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that the

specified values of the backup battery in the front SAM may be set too low. This may lead to fault messages in the instrument cluster. Dealers will

update the front SAM parameters at the next workshop visit.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Approximately 16,616 vehicles are affected.

Procedure

2010 Mercedes Benz E 550 Sedan (212.072) V8-5.5L (273.971) Page 381

Note:

^ Use Xentry 01-02/2010 with all associated patches or higher.

^ Follow the steps exactly as described in Xentry.

^ Battery charger not required.

1. Connect Star Diagnosis to vehicle.

2. Update backup battery coding: Control unit view/Driver-side SAM - Front signal acquisition and actuation module

(N10/1)/Adaptations/Configuration/SCN/SCN coding.

3. Follow on-screen instructions.
