Recall - All Activity Module Replacement
FILE:
SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER
PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION - PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER
Campaign No.: 2001020001
March 2001
TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS
SUBJECT:
MODELS 163.154/172/174
REPLACEMENT OF ALL ACTIVITY MODULE (N10) (AAM2)
This campaign has been initiated because it has been determined that the All-Activity Module (N10) (AAM2) (N10, Figure 1) may have been
improperly manufactured. The AAM2 controls a number of systems including the functionality of the high beam lamps, instrument cluster, door
locks and windshield wiper systems. This condition may cause intermittent non-functioning of these systems, which could result in loss of high beam
lamps, instrument cluster information and windshield wipers.
Please review the Affected Serial Number Range table located below, only vehicles within this range are affected by this Recall Campaign.
Prior to performing this Recall Campaign, please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously
repaired.

A copy of the client letter being mailed to the vehicle owners is shown.
Affected Serial Number Range
All vehicles within the affected VIN range must be inspected to determine if the AAM2 is within the production date code determined to be faulty.
AAM2 units found within the affected date range must be replaced.
Procedure (Inspection)
Important Note:
Prior to starting this procedure, ensure that all the vehicle remote keys are present. Should it be necessary to replace the AAM2 (N10), the
remote keys must be on hand, since the replacement AAM2 must "learn" the RF keys.
Please review the entire Recall Campaign Bulletin prior to performing this recall.
1. Connect the Star Diagnosis System (SDS) to the vehicle, review WIS document AD00.00-P-2000-04A as necessary.
Under the menu "Control Units" select "Body", then select AAM and then finally select "Control Unit Version".

2. Observe displayed production date code.
Note:
The Star Diagnosis screen displays the Production day, Month and Year. Only AAM2 modules with a production date code beginning 08/01/01
(DD/MM/YY) through and including 28/01/01 are to be replaced.
If the date code DOES NOT fall within the date codes specified above, no further action is necessary and this concludes the inspection
procedure. Submit a Warranty claim to ensure that VMI is updated.
If the date code DOES fall within the specified range, continue with "Procedure (Removal and Installation)" below.
Procedure (Removal and Installation)
3. Using Star Diagnosis, select "Control Unit Adaptations" under "AAM" menu. Select "Read coding and transfer to the new control unit" to
store coding data in STAR Diagnosis.
Note:
Follow on-screen instructions.
4. To avoid component damage, carefully review MB-net Message # 081, Grp. 54, AAM2 Module Inspection, prior to removing the AAM2.
5. Open hood and remove cover of fuse and relay box (F1, Figure 1), by removing the 5 securing screws for the cover.
6. Unscrew 2 screws to lift up and remove the fuse and relay box (F1, Figure 1), use caution and do not bring any live cables into contact with
ground.
7. Unplug the 4 connectors as well as the antenna on the AAM2 (N10).
8. Use caution when removing AAM2 next, as there is danger of breaking the locking tabs. Therefore, insert wedge (special tool 115 589 03 59
00) between AAM2 and fuse and relay box to disengage locking tab at top center. Release locking tab above the connectors and
simultaneously push the AAM2 away from the fuse and relay box (F1, Figure 1).
9. Carefully insert the replacement AAM2 into the fuse and relay box (F1, Figure 1), take care not to bend the pin connectors, while inserting.
Reconnect the 4 connectors and antenna wire.
10. Using SDS transfer previously stored AAM2 data from Star diagnosis to new AAM2, by carefully following the on-screen menu.
11. Using Star diagnosis, select "Learn radio code of new transmitter key" to "Learn" RF keys to new AAM2.
12. Repeat above procedure for all RF keys, and verify that each key locks/unlocks the vehicle.
Note:
All RF keys must be present at time of AAM2 replacement. If the RF key is not "learned", the remote key will not be able to unlock the vehicle
via RF. Additionally, ensure that the vehicle can be started with all the RF keys and all the key functions work properly.
13. Reinstall all removed components in reverse order.
14. Perform function test to ensure proper function of the AAM2, prior to returning vehicle to the client.
