EMS2K Various Software Improvements
MODEL
R50 W10 with EMS2K up to 07/04
R53 W11 with EMS2K up to 03/05
SITUATION
The latest DME software for EMS2000 equipped vehicles includes various improvements to address certain drivability or OBD diagnostics-related
complaints, such as:
1. R53 W11 with 6-speed Unstable idle condition on cold start in lower ambient temperatures.
Important Note:
The cold start problems may also be created by using fuels with a high percentage of ethanol (10% and higher). In such a case, the DME is not
able to fully adapt to non-conforming fuel volatility. Please explain the importance of proper fuel quality to the customer using the information
provided in M13 01 06 (Alcohol Fuels Blends in MINI Vehicles).
2. R53 W11 with 6-speed - Idle fluctuation when decelerating to a stop with hot engine.
3. R50 W10 with CVT or 5-speed, R53 W11 with 6-speed Erroneous thermostat fault P0128 ("Coolant Thermostat temperature below control
temp."), with Service Engine Soon light illuminated. The engine is not overheating and the thermostat is working correctly.
4. R50 W10 with CVT or 5-speed, R53 W11 with 6-speed Erroneous post-catalyst fault P0136 ("O2 Sensor Bank 1, post cat malfunction") with
Service Engine Soon illuminated. There is no impact on drivability of the vehicle.
[NEW] CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the vehicle using the latest (G00/9; J10/6) EMS2K software which is on Progman V21.2 or higher.
This Progman software version is displayed as 21.02.00 in the Progman "Installation status" screen or 21.02 on the "Administration" screen.
[NEW] PROCEDURE

1. Connect an approved battery charger and DK diagnostic head.
2. Start new Progman session and select "MINI" series.
3. Select "Load Software", and then answer "NO" to the query as to whether any of the control modules have been replaced.
4. Select DME from the list of the control modules.
5. Select "Program" menu, and then "Update Software" from the submenu. The measure plan will be determined and displayed.
6. Select "Accept" and "Start" to start programming.
Important:
After the DME programming ends, continue to follow the Progman screen prompts to "Turn Off Ignition", wait 25 seconds, and then "Turn On"
ignition to complete the DME coding and measures plan successfully. If necessary, determine and clear any fault codes using the GT1 diagnostic
path.
