SUBJECT



N54 - Misfire Faults, Diagnosis with ISTA D



MODEL



All with N54 engine



SITUATION I



The Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated with various misfire fault codes (e.g., 29CC, 29D2, 29D1, 29D0, 29C0, 29CF) stored in the DME



control module.



When executing the misfire test plan B1214_DI6MISFIRE2 (using ISTA D 2.19 or 2.20), the procedure instructs the technician to replace the



complete set of piezo injectors, even in situations when only the single misfire fault is stored in the individual cylinder, and the vehicle is already



equipped with the latest improved version of the injectors (P/N 13 53 7 585 261). The Diagnostic Code D1350_00000000_01_013 is provided at the



end of the test plan.



CAUSE



Error in the B1214_DI6MISFIRE2 test plan in ISTA D 2.19 and 2.20



CORRECTION



Do not follow the recommendation of the test plan to replace a complete set of the injectors (unless, in a very unlikely situation, the affected vehicle



is equipped with the earliest version injectors, P/N 13 53 7 537 317).



[NEW] NOTE:



[NEW] The Misfire Test plan has been corrected with ISTA/D 2.21. Make sure the latest version (2.21 or higher) is being used when diagnosing



N54 drivability complaints.



For comprehensive N54 drivability misfire diagnosis, always refer to the "N54 Engine Diagnostic Fault Tree" file (the current version [NEW]



"06_04_10" is attached).



SITUATION II



The Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated and a single, individual cylinder misfire fault is stored in the DME. The affected vehicle's integration



level has been checked and corrected if needed (per SI B12 05 09 and SI B12 06 09), and the latest version of the piezo injectors (P/N 13 53 7 585



261) is already installed.



CAUSE



Deviation between adaptation tolerances of the individual injector and a cylinder



CORRECTION



Swap the affected injector with the one from another bank (e.g., misfiring cylinder 1 injector swap with the injector from cylinder 6).



Replace the Teflon seal (P/N 13 53 7 57 550) before injector installation (refer to SI B13 06 06 and REP 13 53 310 for detailed instructions).



After the injector replacement, perform individual injector calibration (adjustment) with the DME control module per SI B12 26 08, using test plan



S1214_DI6IAG "Injector volume calibration".



Finally, clear the DME adaption values, using test plan B1214_NG6AWZS "Deleting engine adaptation values" found in Service Functions.



Readapting the DME by means of a short test drive is recommended:



^ Bring the engine to the normal operating temperature.



^ Drive the vehicle at a speed of between 50-60 mph and engine speeds of 2,000-3,000 rpm for approximately 3 minutes (use manual gear shifting,



if needed).



^ Let the engine idle for approximately 5 minutes.
