COMAND Head Unit Software Update Required to Subscribe to Additional SIRIUS XM Channels
The recent merger between SIRIUS Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio brought some channel line up changes, most notably the availability of
the "Best of XM" package to SIRIUS subscribers. To make this change, there was a SIRIUS channel lineup change in September 2008 that made the
way to launch the "Best of XM" package in October 2008 when it began offering "SIRIUS Everything + XM" and "SIRIUS Family + XM". These
packages, containing a selection of XM programming, are available at an additional subscription cost to SIRIUS customers.
For additional details concerning the impact of the expanded channel lineup to Mercedes-Benz vehicles, please refer to the Netstar Message titled:
"SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio Channel Line-Up Changes"
Depending on the model vehicle and the installed Satellite Radio Receiver "Generation" type, it may not be possible for these vehicles to receive the

additional channels. For vehicles listed in this Bulletin equipped with Sat. Radio receivers able to receive the additional channels; a Telematics Head
Unit Software update will be required.
Customers with vehicles not listed in this Bulletin should be directed to contact SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio Customer Service; it will be then
determined if the installed Satellite Radio Receiver will be capable of receiving these additional channels.
Note:
This Bulletin is only applicable for models referenced above and can be used ONLY when a Customer subscribes to the additional Satellite Radio
Channels, otherwise, the claim will be denied.
Should an update be needed, DAS 04/09 or newer (ensure all patches are installed) along with the appropriate Telematics CDs referenced in the
update procedures below are required.
Important:
A Star Diagnosis Machine and a Battery Charger must be connected to the vehicles throughout the entire head unit software update for procedures 1
and 2. Disconnecting the battery or DAS during the update process may interrupt the process and render the Head Unit inoperative. For procedure 2,
the update process may require the Star Diagnosis to be connected to the vehicle for up to 2 hours! The length of the update is depending on if the
Head Unit only or the Head Unit and the entire Telematics Ring will be updated on the particular vehicle. Determination of the components that will
get the update is determined by DAS and the user will be informed as to the length of the update.
1) Update Procedure, Models 216/221 Systems
Requirements: DAS 10/08 and all latest patches & SD Telematics Software CD 221 827 70 59 ES2:0001
a) Connect a battery charger
b) Turn engine and electrical consumers OFF
c) Start DAS and follow menu paths: Control units --> Information and Communication --> Audio, video, navigation, and Telematics -->
COMAND --> Control Unit Adaptations --> Control Module Programming.....carry out the steps outlined by DAS (On-line SCN coding should be
selected for the update when possible)
d) After a successful update, the COMAND's software version will be 29/08
2) Update Procedure, MY 2009, Models 164/171/211/219/230/251/463
Note:
Please read this note carefully before starting the software update!
Shortly after inserting Telematics CD as prompted by DAS, the head unit may display either of the following messages: "Unknown format" or "Disc
unreadable". Please ignore these messages and wait as the head unit completes the CD recognition and security steps, this message may last between
5-10 minutes.
Due to the amount of integration in our new Telematics Systems, Model Year 2009 head units contain several internal applications (software
modules) which would need to be updated, these applications are Main application, DVD Mechanism, Blue Tooth application, Voice Control, etc.
The software update process starts with the Main application and continues through each software module within the head unit until the software is
downloaded onto all of these modules. During the update process, the head unit may display the message "software missing", please ignore this
message do not press any buttons and do not eject the software CD unless prompted by DAS.
Requirements: DAS 04/09 or newer and all latest patches & S Telematics Software CD 171 827 39 59 ES2:0001
a) Connect a battery charger

3) Update Procedure, MY 2008, Models 171/211/219
The required software can be obtained from the Service Update CDs. Part Number W171 589 05 22 00 (for 171) or W211 589 16 22 00 (for
211/219)

a) Power up the COMAND head unit and select "Radio" mode, make sure the head unit's CD player is empty.
b) Press and release the Key Combination (1, 3, 8) on the head unit simultaneously.
c) When prompted, insert the correct Service Update Disc into the head unit disc player.
d) Wait a few seconds while the head unit detects the disc, you may be prompted to accept the software update. Press "OK" hardkey to start the
update process.
e) When the update is complete, the head unit will eject the disc Remove the disc and wait as the head unit will automatically reboot. The update
process is now complete.
f) After a successful update, the COMAND's software version will be 29/08
