With the GLA, Mercedes-Benz shucked some of its reputation for stodgy
small cars. The Mercedes-Benz GLA arrived in the 2015 model year and
has since seen a few small refreshments, the most significant coming
last model year. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class gets some humble
updates, but all models in the lineup鈥攖he front-wheel-drive GLA250,
all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic, and rip-roaring Mercedes-AMG GLA45
should make for city-friendly crossover SUVs with a hint of luxury.
Updates for the 2019 GLA lineup include two new paint colors, Iridium
Silver and Denim Blue, and revisions to the GLA45鈥檚 Premium Package
and Convenience Package. Twenty-inch multi-spoke wheels are now
standard on the AMG version, too. Otherwise, not much has changed on
the GLA, which carries over styling and powertrains from last year. The
GLA250 models use a 2.0-liter turbo-4 mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch
automatic good for 208 horsepower. The GLA45, however, maintains its
significant bump in grunt, pushing out 375 hp from a heavily modified
version of the same engine and transmission. A standout of the GLA鈥檚
driving experience is its taut handling, but this unfortunately
translates to a somewhat stiff ride over less-than-perfect roads.

May 18, 2018 鈥?Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 9,800 vehicles
equipped with "Active Curve" systems that may leak oil onto hot
surfaces and cause engine compartment fires. Mercedes says the
combination of oil levels below minimum and certain driving conditions
can cause the Active Curve oil reservoir to start foaming oil that can
leak through the vent holes of the cap. The oil can spray onto hot
surfaces and cause an engine compartment fire, which is what led the
automaker to discover the problems. In July 2017, Mercedes received a
fire report with a 2015 model that showed local "thermal" damage in the
engine compartment, causing engineers to open an investigation. First
results of the analysis indicated leaking oil from the oil reservoir of
the Active Curve system through the vent holes in the sealing cap of
the oil reservoir. Engineers were able to cause oil in the oil pump to
foam up under certain driving conditions, a problem blamed on the low
oil level in the Active Curve system. Mercedes-Benz isn't ready to
perform the recall just yet, so owners should watch for initial recall
notices in June 2018. The automaker will send second notices when
dealers are ready to make the repairs. Dealers are expected to correct
the oil levels and replace the reservoir sealing caps.

Mercedes-Benz has a brand new generation G-Class off-roader on the
market, which - to say the least - looks almost identical to the model
it replaced. However, beauty lies in the details as they say - despite
its familiar look, the SUV now features a completely revised
suspension, new interior, and revised engine lineup. In fact, just five
parts carry over from the 2018 version of the machine: the spare-tire
cover, sun visors, headlight-washer sprayers, door handles, and a
structural bracket hidden within the dash. Everything else is
completely new. After all, it turns out that you can teach an old dog
new tricks. Want to know more? Join us and YouTuber Alaatin61 for a
detailed walkaround video of the current range-topper below the AMG
offerings, the G550 sold in Europe as the G500. It features a modern
4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine, good for 450 pound-feet (610
Newton-meters) of torque delivered from as little as 2,250 rpm and a
bountiful 416 horsepower (310 kilowatts). On the Old Continent, the
peak power stands at 422 hp (315 kW). And the best thing is that the
improved on-road handling and overall behavior don鈥檛 affect the G鈥檚
amazing off-road capabilities. That鈥檚 possible mainly thanks to the
fact that there鈥檚 still a solid rear axle, albeit now attached with a
five-link, trailing arm-type suspension. Just don鈥檛 forget to go for
the optional Off-Road package, which adds 18-inch wheels with Falken
Wildpeak A/T rubber.

Don鈥檛 let the new name fool you. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is a
mild update, not a full redesign, of the second-generation GL-Class
that began with the 2013 model year. The name is simply a result of
Mercedes鈥?nomenclature overhaul. Compare the two SUVs here.
TheMercedes-Benz GLS-Class comes with a V-6 (GLS450) or V-8 (GLS550)
engine, both turbocharged. There鈥檚 also a GLS350d with a turbo-diesel
V-6, but, as of this writing, it鈥檚 awaiting EPA clearance amid
heightened scrutiny over all things diesel. All-wheel drive and seating
for seven are standard; you can compare trim levels here. In a
nutshell, the GLS-Class is a GL-Class with new headlights and grille
inserts. Mercedes-Benz revised a handful of other areas, too 鈥?the
bumper openings, some lower cladding and (just barely) the taillights
鈥?but those changes are even slighter. This is hardly an overhaul, and
given the GL-Class鈥?crowd-pleasing styling, it didn鈥檛 need to be.
95,000 starting price is also a lot meaner on your wallet.
