The next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class is close to a debut, possibly
as soon as the Detroit Auto Show in January, and a new spy video
reveals the latest state of the G63's development. This one features a
digital instrument panel. A mule in previous spy shots (gallery below)
provided a better view of the cabin, but that model had analog
instruments. It's not clear at this point whether the earlier model is
simply early in development or whether Mercedes intends to offer the
digital panel as an option. In addition, the interior features a large
display on the center stack. Below it, there's metallic trim
surrounding stylish vents and an array of physical controls. This video
shows two test mules under development. One of them appears to be in a
more finished state. Mercedes' mesh over the front end can't hide the
shiny vertical slats in the company's Panamericana grille. Horizontal
dividers break up the corner intakes in the lower fascia, and there's
mesh in the center section. The headlights are under heavy concealment,
but the engineers expose the LEDs in the center. The other model in
this clip has standard halogen lights. In profile, the G63 continues to
look tough. It features muscular fenders, an upright stance, and
side-exit exhausts. Around back, there's a big rear window and fairly
tiny rectangular taillights. Mercedes recently announced that it would
discontinue the G500 4脳4虏 at the end of October. This suggests the
company is winding down production of the current generation in
preparation for the new model. The next G-Class reportedly rides on a
new platform that helps it cut a significant amount of weight.
Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-liter biturbo V8 would power the new G63, and the
6.0-liter biturbo V12 would continue to motivate the G65.

I鈥檓 not sure who asked that question, or why, but here we are. Still,
after a few days with the bubble-shaped AMG450, I have a little better
sense of what this car is truly for. I had the AMG for our first
weekend of snow here in Michigan, and on those aggressive Pirelli
P-Zeros, things got a little dicey. On my first expressway jaunt, when
there were just a few slippery inches on the ground, the car felt
sloppy. I looked at the window sticker and didn鈥檛 see the 4Matic
notation, which made me even more nervous. I ended up putting the car
in snow mode, which softened up the throttle, allowing me to use my
normal pedal force without flying off the road. When I found it was
4Matic-equipped, I got a little more aggressive and found the 4WD and
traction control system working in unity, no matter what I did with the
right pedal.

We're still not sure why, but high-horsepower, performance-tuned SUVs
are fun to drive. They're not as fast as their lower-slung car
counterparts, and they're not as useful as their softer-sprung off-road
cousins. But the love of cars doesn't always need a reason, and that's
why they make vehicles like the 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. Updated
only visually for 2011, the new ML63 AMG gets a face that fits more
closely with its updated family while retaining its 510-horsepower
6.3-liter V-8 engine. That's still enough to scoot to 60 mph in five
seconds flat, and on to the electronically-limited top speed of 155
mph. Shifting is still handled by the AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic
automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is still split 40:60 front
to rear. So what's new for 2011? A new hood with "power domes,"
darkened bi-xenon headlights, and clear-lens and darkened LED tail
lights. Yep, that's a pretty minor facelift.

The Range Rover has set a high bar for luxury SUVs. It was one of the
first of its kind and few can compete with its ability to go anywhere,
any time, in any weather in a leather-lined interior. Introduced for
the 2013 model year, the current Range Rover has aged with grace, but
it is aging as new competition arrives in the form of Bentayga and
Cullinan. For 2018, Land Rover has given the Range Rover a tech
overhaul with a handful of screens inside the cabin, a few updates on
the exterior, and more luxury options than ever before. I spent a long
weekend with the updated luxury liner to see if those changes spoiled
the serene mood鈥攊f they were more tech overload than tech overhaul.
The Range Rover has elegant, even minimalist style, compared to the
Bentley and Rolls SUVs, but it鈥檚 a look that has needed almost no
updates.
