ESP Road Test Procedure
If you are unsuccessful in performing the "road-test" procedure as required when replacing the lateral acceleration and/or yaw rate sensor, please
review the guide listed below for assistance.
Star Diagnosis and WIS document AD42.45-P-3000-03A should be reviewed for additional instructions.
Prerequisites
1. No diagnostic fault or event codes stored or present, other than "road-test" specific codes.
Note:
The diagnostic fault code "Road-Test Active" is entered into diagnostic trouble code memory. This entry is deleted automatically once the
road-test is completed.
2. Vehicle at standstill.
2000 Mercedes Benz Truck ML 55 AMG (163.174) V8-5.5L (113.981) 337
Pre Road-Test Test Sequence
1. Using STAR Diagnosis initiate the "road-test" procedure via the following path: Chassis --> Traction Systems ABS, ASR, ETS, ESP -->
Control Unit Adaptations --> Road Test.
2. Ensure prerequisites listed within STAR Diagnosis are completed, if yes then select F3.
3. Start engine.
4. While viewing the actual value for the steering angle sensor (N49), ensure that the steering angle sensor's value is < 10 gradients. The steering
wheel should be straight.
5. Select F3.
6. End the diagnostic secession and disconnect STAR Diagnosis from vehicle.
Road-Test
1. Switch off ignition.
2. Start engine.
3. Press switch S76/6 (ESP OFF Switch). The ESP warning lamp A1e41 and the BAS/ESP malfunction indicator A1e47 will illuminate. ESP
will now be switched OFF.
Note:
The road-test must be conducted with 15 seconds.
4. Drive the vehicle forward at approximately 6 - 10 mph.
5. After a short distance (few yards) turn the vehicle left and then right. The steering wheel should be turned between 90 & 180 degrees.
6. Within 10 seconds begin turning a quarter circle and then briefly steer in the other direction.
Note:
The ESP warning lamp A1e41 and the BAS/ESP malfunction indicator A1e47 will go out if the road-test is successful. If the ESP warning
lamp A1e41 and the BAS/ESP malfunction indicator A1e47 are still illuminated, then recycle the ESP OFF switch S76/6 to begin road-test
again. Driving too fast/slow, not starting the road-test in the prescribed time frame, and turning the steering wheel greater than 360 degrees
will cause the road-test procedure to fail.
