Campaign - Update Control Module Software

Campaign No. 2012120002

April 2013

Revision Date Purpose

A 04/05/13 Revision to work Procedure

- 03/28/13 Initial release

TO:

ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:

Model 906, Model Years 2010 - 2011

Update Engine Control Module Software

This Service Campaign has been initiated because Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles, has

determined that humidity can enter the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve which may cause an electrical short circuit. As a result, the feedback

signal from the valve to the engine control module (ECM) may fail. As a consequence, the EGR valve may be switched-off and the vehicles will

experience a loss of power and enter a limp home mode. In addition, certain software parameters in the ECM may not respond properly to brief

control deviations of the EGR valve position. Under certain circumstances, this ECM programming can cause an unfavorable response which can

deactivate the periodic cleaning function of the EGR valve. If the control deviation occurs twice within two consecutive driving cycles the MIL will

be illuminated. To correct these conditions, Dealers will update the Engine Control Module software at the next workshop visit.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Vibrations in vehicle.

The vibrations are vehicle speed-dependent and occur as of approx. 40MPH.

Note:

Speed-dependent complaints also occur when the clutch is disengaged and in selector lever position N.

Cause:

The vibrations can be caused by the following:

1) Radial force variations and/or imbalance in the front wheels are transferred to the vehicle in the form of vibrations.

2) The propeller shaft is damaged or the propeller shaft centre support bearing is installed under stress.

Note:

Modifications, bodies and tire replacement affect the vehicle characteristics and can cause a complaint.

Tires not recommended by Mercedes-Benz can aggravate this problem.

Remedy:

The complaint must be reproduced by means of a test drive.

If it is not possible to reproduce the complaint, contact the customer. Otherwise, process the following points one after the other.

1) Check wheels for damage and tire inflation pressure. Replace any damaged, unusable wheels. Correct the tire inflation pressure. If the deviations

are greater than 0.5 bar, correct them and perform a test drive.

2) Check radial force variation (RFV) of the front wheels/tires on a suitable balance machine. Match mount the wheels/tires if necessary.

3) Balance wheels on wheel balancing machine.

4) Mount the wheels. Ensure that they are seated centrally and tighten the wheel studs/wheel nuts finger-tight in a crosswise pattern, then tighten to

the required tightening torque.

5) Perform test drive. If the problem is still present, continue with step 6).

6) Check the propeller shaft (GW) for external damage.

7) Check whether the propeller shaft centre support bearing is seated under stress.

8) Perform test drive. If the complaint is still present, contact the contact person at the national representative office.

Page 94

Moist areas from which no fluid is dripping off or draining away do not represent cause for complaint. These are caused by the phenomenon of

"sweating" (see attachment).

This "sweating" cannot be avoided with the current state of the art and does not have any negative effects. This sweating may also be caused by

pregreasing of the pinion sealing ring.

Remedy:

Repairs due to sweating only produce an aesthetic improvement and are not justified.

To perform a precise check, clean the affected area thoroughly with a cloth and monitor over an appropriate period of time (approx. 1 week or max.

1000 km).

If necessary, check the rear axle oil level and the housing ventilation up to the frame crossmember.

If fluid is dripping or draining off visibly, a leak is present which must be eliminated by performing appropriate repair work as described in WIS.

If a leak is present, also replace the standard oil drain screw with a magnetic oil drain screw A 000 990 58 17.

Steering wheel vibrations in specified vehicle speed range. Vehicle vibrations can also be felt.

Cause:

Radial force variations and/or imbalance in the front wheels are transferred to the steering wheel/vehicle in the form of vibrations.

Note:

Tires not recommended by Mercedes-Benz can aggravate this problem.

Remedy:

The complaint must be reproduced by means of a test drive.

If it is not possible to reproduce the complaint, contact the customer. Otherwise, process the following points one after

the other.

1) Check wheels for damage and tire inflation pressure. Replace any damaged, unusable wheels. Correct the tire inflation pressure. Perform a test

drive if the deviations are greater than 0.5 bar.

2) Check radial force variation (RFV) of the front wheels on a suitable balance machine.

6) Install the specified steering shaft and perform a test drive.

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:

Model 906, Model Year 2010 - 2011

Replace Emergency Exit Window

Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles, has determined that on certain vehicles equipped with

an emergency exit window the adhesive bond between the glass and the hinge on the top of the window may loosen. As a result the emergency exit

window may separate from the body. Dealers will check a production date on the window and replace the emergency exit window if necessary.

Included is a sample copy of a letter which owners of the affected vehicles will receive.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 276 vehicles are involved.

7-speed automatic transmission 722.9 after transmission production date June 21, 2010

Only use the transmission oils outlined in specification sheet 236.15

See WIS document: BB.00.40-p-0236-15.

MB part number - A001 989 78 03 09

Note:

The 2 different variants of 722.9 transmission oil are not compatible with one another and can not be mixed. The later oil can be identified by its

blue color as opposed to the former oil which is red in color.

Exception Note 1: Transmissions electrohydraulic controller units and torque converters made available through the parts department are checked at

the production plant with FE AT-134 only. This is why these parts may exhibit traces of FE ATF-134, In this case the transmission controller unit

and torque converter must not be cleaned. The transmission can be filled with the corresponding gear oil (as per this SI) immediately after it has been

installed.

Exception Note 2: Transmission 722.6, 722.9 up to transmission component serial number 2834526 may not be filled with FE~ATF 134.

Transmissions constructed after the June 21, 2010 transition can be visually identified by the following characteristics:

1. The oil pan has a noticeable change in the 4 dimples (pictured below).

2010 Mercedes Benz Truck Sprinter 3500 Cab (906.153) V6-3.0L DSL Turbo (642.898)

Page 140

2. The oil pan is 5mm deeper

3. The overflow pipe (inside the oil pan) is Green rather than black or white as on the earlier construction transmissions.

Xentry DAS version 05/2010 together with add-on 1476 displays a reference to the specified gear oil before reading out the transmission oil

temperature.

This information must be observed when filling the transmission.
