SUBJECT

Cleaning Excess Butyl from RHT Roof Shells

MODEL

E93 (3 Series Convertible)

SITUATION

Butyl adhesive is used to secure the seals of the retractable hardtop (RHT) to the steel roof shell panels.

Particularly at high ambient temperatures, if excess butyl is present, it may start to seep out from between the seal and the roof shell.

This butyl may be black or gray in color.

CAUSE

Excess butyl applied to the roof shell during assembly

CORRECTION

Remove the excess butyl by following the procedure outlined below.

Failure to follow this procedure could result in a water leak that was not present before.

PROCEDURE

2010 BMW 335Cic Convertible (E93) L6-3.0L Turbo (N54) 128

1. Use a nylon wedge (1) to press the excess butyl (2) out from under the seal. The excess butyl should be pulled up onto the roof shell as shown.

2. Lay any commercially available plastic tape (1) over the butyl previously pressed out. Press down on the butyl with the nylon wedge (2).

3. Pull the tape (1) off the roof shell and most of the butyl (2) will be removed with the tape. Blot the tape on the roof shell to remove any remaining

butyl.

4. Insert a toothpick or pick (1) under the affected area of the seal. Rotate the pick to collect the excess butyl (2) still under the seal and pull it out.

This will allow the seal to sit flush to the roof shell.

NOTE:

Perform this step carefully, as removing too much butyl could result in a future water leak.

5. Clean any remaining residue on the painted roof shell using adhesive remover, such as Wurth Clean Solve.
