GLK but not such a fan of its incredibly boxy styling? Or like the
styling just fine but just wish it had a diesel? Well we've got good
news for you, friends, because Mercedes-Benz has just taken the wraps
off a revised model that aims to remedy both. Not only does the 2013
GLK-Class get the familiar new family face, but what's behind it has
been replaced as well. That means a direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 for
the GLK350 that's more powerful and more efficient than the powerplant
it replaces, and also a 2.1-liter turbodiesel that joins the family
wearing GLK250 BlueTEC badging. The interior has been updated as well,
all of which Mercedes surely hopes will help it fend off advances from
the Audi Q5, the BMW X3, Volvo's XC60 and the rumored baby RX from
Lexus. Take a closer look at the updated GLK in our high-res gallery of
live images from the New York Auto Show floor above and the stock shots
in the gallery below for a closer look.

When it鈥檚 describing the monster you see before you here from the
2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4脳4 Squared.
Let鈥檚 start by getting into the 4脳4 Squared 鈥?if you can. The truck
has more than 17 inches of ground clearance, meaning you literally have
to climb up into it. The only grab handle for the driver is on the
roof, which is totally out of reach, so you have to haul yourself up
into it by hanging onto the steering wheel. A stepladder or Cadillac
Escalade-style folding side step would be a smart addition here, but
it鈥檚 nowhere to be found. Once situated in the
carbon-fiber-and-leather trimmed cabin, your view out is commanding.
This is the view that truck drivers have from the cab of their
tractor-trailer rigs. There鈥檚 no problem seeing what鈥檚 around you
thanks to the G-wagen鈥檚 slab-sided boxy styling and big windows that
obscure nothing. The track is wider in this particular model, so there
are more aggressive fender flares to accommodate the wider spacing.
Those fenders are apparently carbon fiber, as is the roof rack, light
bar and other exterior trim bits. I personally would be afraid to drive
the thing through any serious off-road rock crawling situations
-carbon-fiber fenders aren鈥檛 known for their flexibility or impact
resistance, and I can only imagine what the replacement costs will be.
No, despite the ability of the G550 4脳4 Squared to handle high-speed
desert running or deep-water fording, you鈥檙e far more likely to see
one navigating the wilds of Beverly Hills than summiting any actual
hills. 225,925 monster-truck toy for rich folks to look like they鈥檙e
ready for heading off-road but who are exceedingly unlikely to actually
go there 鈥?unless you鈥檙e an oil sheik. They really do take these
kinds of rigs through the desert on a regular basis.

Lewis Hamilton gave some of his team the ultimate thrill and fright by
taking them drifting at Mercedes Benz World in an E63 AMG. The
30-year-old Hamilton, who leads the Formula 1 drivers standings by 10
points over Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, laughed about the incident
on his official Facebook page. Took some of my team out for a spin in a
sick E63 AMG at the Mercedes-Benz World track on Monday! The Mercedes
car itself costs around 拢85,000 and the members of Hamilton's team can
be heard getting shaken up by his ferocious driving while Hamilton is
having the time of his life. Hamilton, whom Bernie Ecclestone lauded as
the best ever champion for Formula One鈥檚 image, has been named only
the fourth most popular driver in a survey of 200,000 fans. The
championship leader came behind taciturn Finn Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando
Alonso and Jenson Button. The survey, conducted online by the Grand
Prix Drivers鈥?Association ahead of Sunday鈥檚 British Grand Prix, also
showed that more than half of fans do not watch the sport live on TV,
much of which coverage is now subscriber-based.

Perhaps the auto industry鈥檚 most unlikely icon, the Mercedes-Benz
G-wagen was originally developed for the German military way back in
1979. The civilian model gained popularity for its rugged chic and
anti-style style. Then AMG got its hands on the G-wagen, and the
muscled-up variants including the G63 and the twin-turbo V-12-powered
G65 eventually eclipsed the standard G-class in sales. It became clear
that the more outrageous Mercedes made the G-wagen, the more buyers
loved it. Although we鈥檝e just driven the all-new G-class, we couldn鈥
檛 pass up the opportunity to strap our test gear to this final
iteration of the (nearly) original G-wagen, which literally towers over
the standard model. Naturally, with its 17.2 inches of ground
clearance, we had to take the 4x42 off-road. The portal axles, which
use in-hub gears to locate the wheel centers below the
axles鈥?driveshafts, combine with the massive wheels and tires to
deliver 7.9 inches more air between this G and the ground than in a
standard model. Factor in the steep approach and breakover angles (not
so much the departure angle, owning to the comparatively low-hanging
rear bumper), and there wasn鈥檛 an obstacle this Benz couldn鈥檛
overcome.
