When it鈥檚 describing the monster you see before you here from the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4脳4 Squared. Let鈥檚 start by getting into the 4脳4 Squared 鈥?if you can. The truck has more than 17 inches of ground clearance, meaning you literally have to climb up into it. The only grab handle for the driver is on the roof, which is totally out of reach, so you have to haul yourself up into it by hanging onto the steering wheel. A stepladder or Cadillac Escalade-style folding side step would be a smart addition here, but it鈥檚 nowhere to be found. Once situated in the carbon-fiber-and-leather trimmed cabin, your view out is commanding. This is the view that truck drivers have from the cab of their tractor-trailer rigs. There鈥檚 no problem seeing what鈥檚 around you thanks to the G-wagen鈥檚 slab-sided boxy styling and big windows that obscure nothing. The track is wider in this particular model, so there are more aggressive fender flares to accommodate the wider spacing. Those fenders are apparently carbon fiber, as is the roof rack, light bar and other exterior trim bits. I personally would be afraid to drive the thing through any serious off-road rock crawling situations -carbon-fiber fenders aren鈥檛 known for their flexibility or impact resistance, and I can only imagine what the replacement costs will be. No, despite the ability of the G550 4脳4 Squared to handle high-speed desert running or deep-water fording, you鈥檙e far more likely to see one navigating the wilds of Beverly Hills than summiting any actual hills. 225,925 monster-truck toy for rich folks to look like they鈥檙e ready for heading off-road but who are exceedingly unlikely to actually go there 鈥?unless you鈥檙e an oil sheik. They really do take these kinds of rigs through the desert on a regular basis.

The electronically assisted power steering feels heavy while pulling out of a downtown Frankfurt hotel parking lot, though the mildly offroad Pirelli Scorpions do nothing to mask the granular steering feel. Steering in the G550 is appropriately slow, though precise, considering the size of this SUV. On the autobahn, the steering actually feels a bit too light. The steering feel remains constant, which led us to panic that we had entered a mild, rain-soaked autobahn left-hander too hot at barely the speed limit. Unlike any of the Mercedes crossovers, the G-Class demands a bit of reorientation from driving a car. On the few s-curves we sample, the G550 yaws reassuringly. It鈥檚 not too soft, but far from harsh considering the off-road tires and suspension. Full disclosure: We did not play with the newly added optional adjustable suspension, though on the wet roads, we wouldn鈥檛 have pushed it hard enough to tell the difference. Other changes in the 2016 facelift are a new instrument cluster, with cleaner graphics in the dials, and a new lower front fascia, with a central air intake replacing the foglamps, plus an under-guard and rounded corners. The fender side arches also are wider. What鈥檚 the difference between the Mercedes G-Class and those other models? If Benz insists on calling the GLA-, GLE-, GLC- and GLS-Class sport 鈥?not crossover 鈥?utility vehicles, then let鈥檚 go back to calling the G-Class what it is: a truck. A smooth, quiet, and reassuring truck.
