If you are shopping for a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, you'll need to be
a little more specific. The luxury-car benchmark is available in many
different forms sedan or wagon, coupe or even convertible, or in
thundering E63 AMG cut. The good news is that all of them meet its
decades-long heritage, while offering a little more focused driving
experience than before. Since its last full redesign this year, the
E-Class has improved in several managed to graduate steps. This year's
round of changes may be the most dramatic yet, bringing in better
energy economy and better performance, more safety technologies, and a
cleaner look that drops a few of the furrowed brows of the past three
many years. Altogether, it's right up against the Audi A6 and BMW
5-Series along with the Infiniti Q70 and Cadillac CTS. For that 2018
model year the E-Class is offered like a E250 Blue TEC sedan; an E350
sedan, truck, coupe or cabriolet; an E550 sedan, coupe, or even
cabriolet; and an E63 AMG sedan as well as wagon.

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the first complete
redesign in its 40-year history. It鈥檚 still remarkable to think that
the Mercedes-Benz G-Class went on sale nearly 40 years ago, in 1979.
Back then, it was steeped in rugged, capable military roots. Since then
it鈥檚 gotten way more luxurious and powerful, culminating in monsters
like the AMG G65, with its massive V12 engine. Under the hood, both the
G550 and G63 AMG pack a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The version in
the standard model makes 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. Step
up to the AMG model, on sale next year, makes 577 horsepower and a
monstrous 627 lb-ft of torque. Both engines mate up to a nine-speed
automatic transmission. The new model may not have a massive V12 at the
top of its range, but you have to admit, the V8 still sounds pretty
good. Not only is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class more powerful, but it鈥
檚 physically larger as well. The new model is two inches longer and
five inches wider than the outgoing G-Class. Despite the increased
size, don鈥檛 think the G-Class has lost a shred of its off-road
ability.

In a drive through the Austrian Alps, the Mercedes-Benz GLS550 4Matic
provides high levels of comfort and performance. A light freezing rain
throughout the night had left slippery conditions in the morning.
Nevertheless, we were going to resume the drive that had brought us
here to the Austrian ski resort of Hochgurgl in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz
GLS550 4Matic, a variant of the seven-passenger SUV that is replacing
the brand鈥檚 GL model. Powered by a 449 hp V-8, the GLS550 had
effortlessly ferried my passenger, me, and our luggage the previous day
from Innsbruck, the winter-sports center whose most visible landmark is
the Bergisel Ski Jump that looms over the city. The route from
Hochgurgl included an especially serpentine stretch that, we learned,
served as the location for a chase scene in the most recent James Bond
film, Spectre. Though the road was covered with a light dusting of
snow, the GLS550 equipped with Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 4Matic all-wheel drive
had plenty of traction in Sport mode, one of five standard settings
that also include Slippery and Comfort. Cornering was stable with the
help of the optional Active Curve System, which reduces body roll.
