AM Interference - Relocate Trunk Harness - Service Modification

Issue:

Some 2000 MY S-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range, may experience radio interference particularly on AM Band, that may be described

as a clicking type noise. This bulletin provides procedures to reduce radio signal interference by repositioning the trunk rear harness away from the

Hidden Antenna Module, as well as rerouting the AM lead by installing a link lead.

Action:

In case of a customer complaint of the above condition on a 2000 MY S-TYPE vehicle within the above VIN range, make the following

modifications:

REPOSITIONING TRUNK HARNESS

1. Record the customer settings for the following systems so they can be reset to the customer's preferences:

^ Clock time setting

^ Clock 12/24 hour setting

^ CD compress mode (if equipped. Radio must be in CD mode to check this setting.)

^ Navigation volume defaults to 14 (if equipped)

^ Voice feedback volume defaults to 14 (if equipped - voice training is not lost).

^ Transmission shift mode

^ Radio presets AM/FM

^ Compass calibration and zone setting

^ Navigation memory will be retained if the battery has not been disconnected longer than 24 hrs.

2. Remove battery cover and disconnect ground cable from battery terminal. (See JTIS section 414-01 SRO 86.15.01)

3. Reposition the rear seat backs fully forward for access.

4. Remove interior trim from floor, left side of luggage compartment, rear quarter trim panel and rear parcel shelf under trim panel.

5. Remove the New Technology (NT) harness connectors from their mounting points on the left side of the trunk next to the Hidden Antenna

Module and unclip the New Technology harness from above the wheel-arch.

6. Unclip the AM antenna lead connector from its mounting point on the hidden antenna module, its power supply lead from the bottom and the

coaxial connector on the top left.

7. From the point in the main body harness where the NT Harness splits off, strip back the coaxial cable so it exits the harness where it passes the

bracket to which the trunk gas cylinder is attached stopping at the harness securing strap. At the same time it will be necessary to remove the

Hidden Antenna Module power supply from the harness to allow for extra slack.

Caution:

Use extreme care during this step to avoid damage to other wires.

8. Reseal the main body harness while taping back the Navigation system, Voice Activation and SCP (Standard Corporate Protocol) connectors

as far away from the Hidden Antenna Module as possible. Do not secure the harness to its original mounting points. Allow the harness to lie

over the inner fender well as in Figure 1.

REROUTING THE AM ANTENNA LEAD

1. Disconnect the hidden antenna module antenna lead wires. Carefully remove the D-post trim above the right passenger seat. Determine which

of the black wires in the gray connector connects to the right AM grid connector by using a digital volt-ohmmeter across the connector plug

and the right hand AM grid connector.

2. Once this lead has been identified, it must be removed from the gray connector. First pull out (do not remove) the white anti-backout clip as in

illustration 2 and illustration 3.

3. Release the terminal by depressing its clip inside the front of the connector with a small screwdriver. Tape up the loose terminal from the

connector and place the terminal behind the body cavity foam next to the hidden antenna module. Replace this lead with the new AM antenna

lead.

4. Gain access to the right hand side of the luggage compartment to feed the new AM lead through the desired hole in the body as shown in

Illustration 4. View is from the right rear looking through the backlight.

5. Loosen (do not remove) the parcel tray, install the grommet in the hole to be used for the new AM lead, remove the gray body cavity foam

from the right bulkhead hole and maneuver the black plastic connector up through the hole under the parcel shelf in the body

6. Pull the black plastic connector underneath the trim and up the D-post to the AM antenna grid connection.

7. Disconnect the old lead and tape off to the side.

8. Run the new lead into the wires already in that pillar and connect the AM grid connector.

10. Secure the new AM lead with the supplied clips as shown in Illustration 5.

11. Secure the clip to the harness using a suitable adhesive tape (Illustration 6).

12. Reinstall all interior trim in the reverse order of removal.

13. Reconnect the battery Refer to JTIS section 414-01 SRO 86.15.01.

14. Reset all customer settings to preferred settings as previously noted in step 1.
