The Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG is the latest iteration of the first SUV to
bring supercar-like performance to a segment more typically associated
with soccer mums. BMW鈥檚 M division only started placing its famous
capital letter on the brand鈥檚 softroaders in recent years (X5 M and
X6 M), and Audi has only just introduced its first sporty SUV, the SQ5.
AMG, however, started tuning SUVs back in 1999, with the arrival of the
ML55 AMG. Based on the first-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the
formidable ML55 packed a 255kW 5.5-litre V8 by AMG plus a host of
performance features and modified bodywork. The ML55 AMG could
accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds and had a top speed of 235km/h
- then unprecedented figures in the SUV world. It could accelerate from
0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds and was the most powerful naturally aspirated
SUV in the world. It also proved more popular than its predecessor with
more than 13,000 sold during its lifecycle. Mercedes-Benz decided to
continue with the same ML63 AMG nameplate with the third and latest
generation ML63, despite reducing engine displacement to 5.5 litres. It
develops slightly more power but significantly more torque thanks to a
pair of turbochargers.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK first went on sale at the beginning of 2009 as a
2010 model, which means Mercedes鈥?baby G just celebrated its third
birthday. So the corporate parent is lavishing some attention on its
littlest SUV. Outside, there鈥檚 more chrome, LED lighting front and
rear, and a slightly redone front end. Inside, the driver is presented
with a new dashboard with a sportier, richer-looking instrument
cluster, and bisected by a large trim piece featuring prominent, round
air vents. The GLK350鈥檚 3.5-liter V-6 is a new, direct-injected unit,
and with it, output increases to 302 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque
鈥?up from 268 hp and 258 pound-feet. The seven-speed automatic
returns, although a dainty little column stalk now handles gear
selection, as per popular Benz practice. Mercedes鈥?automatic
stop/start system comes standard with this engine. The system works
well, although it鈥檚 not quite as seamless as you鈥檒l find in the
best hybrids. The bigger powertrain news arrives in January, in the
form of a diesel engine option. Unlike the six-cylinder oil-burner in
the ML and the GL, this is a four-cylinder diesel, the first
four-cylinder diesel in a U.S.
