Volkswagen's cheating scandal has taken a toll on the entire car
industry, as stricter testing procedures now required by the EPA have
delayed diesel certifications for a number of automakers. That includes
Mercedes, which has a short-term plan for diesels, but may not offer
them in the U.S. Mercedes is working to get certification for a select
few diesels in the U.S., but that may not be the case in the future if
demand proves insufficient. Matthias Luehrs, VP of sales and product
management for Mercedes-Benz Cars, told Automotive News. Demand for
diesel cars and crossovers has been low "and is still lowering" in
North America, Luehrs noted. Mercedes is conducting market research to
help it make a decision on the matter. Getting rid of them entirely in
our market "is a theoretical option," he said. Meanwhile, Mercedes is
mostly optimistic about being able to offer diesels in the near future,
saying its priority is to receive approval for the GLS350d. It had also
applied for certification for the GLC and GLE SUVs. Mercedes announced
last month that it was no longer seeking to offer a C-Class diesel next
year in the U.S.

one. Not two. Three. So if you want the utmost in ultra-high
performance that money can buy, you actually have choices. Yet, say you
want a small SUV with a four-cylinder diesel engine鈥攁 proposition
that, sorry, makes a lot more sense than a 200-mph hybrid for two. Your
choice is not which one, but rather which color. Yep, the '13
Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic is the only small SUV (actually the
only SUV of any size) sold in the U.S. Which is unfortunate, because a
compelling argument can be made for a compact crossover with a
four-cylinder diesel. Two, diesels are loaded with low-end torque鈥攖he
off-the-line, out-of-corner oomph that can make daily driving an
enjoyable chore.

Heritage is always a consideration when automakers design new vehicles.
Brands love to bake a little past flavor into new models, in part to
appeal to the nostalgia of buyers, but also to celebrate their past.
Park a modern Mustang next to a classic and you鈥檒l see a little bit
of the past dictating the present. Park a Mercedes-Benz G-Class next to
an original model and you鈥檒l see what it鈥檚 like to barely change
the recipe at all. There are no other vehicles on the market, save for
the Porsche 911 perhaps, that have remained so close to their original
styling than the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. You need only see the body
lines, lifted straight from the 1979 G-Model, to understand how the so
called G-Wagen has evolved. Sure, the powertrain and interior are
thoroughly modern, but it鈥檚 the locking differentials, body-on-frame
construction, lack of aerodynamics, and overbuilt nature keep this
beast entirely old school.
