Massive Takata Airbag Recall: Everything You Need To Know

A U.S. Senate report says at least four automakers are selling new vehicles, from the 2016 and 2017 model years, that have potentially deadly Takata air bag inflators. Well since writing the above review my van was in the shop several more times for the engine light coming on and for 2 dash warnings: Seatbelt sys. In this past year it's been in one shop or another 8 times for the engine light coming on, several times for the ABS light, once for the Traction light (whatever that is). In just this past year, since being stranded for 3 days in AZ in June 2015 for a transmission problem, my truck has been in the shop in 3 different states, been looked at by 5 different dealerships in those 3 states and it's been in 2 private shops in 2 different states. The six-cylinder engine used here was carried over from the pre-facelift Sprinter - a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 with 188 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, mated to an ancient but incredibly smooth-shifting five-speed automatic transmission.



While the vanilla Sprinter is much improved, the vehicle鈥檚 strength still revolves around the upfitters who will modify the car to suit their dreams. While Mercedes-Benz was demonstrating the 2014 Sprinters, it also revealed some interesting news about the upcoming 2015 model, which will sport two features likely to make it more appealing to certain buyers. Separately, Daimler Vans USA is recalling 76 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles from the 2018 model year built from July 4 to July 19, 2018. Sprinters vans have been significantly superior to the first generation Ford Transit Connect I owned (limited cargo capacity, paltry power on grades, unstable in high wind, and had non existent towing capacity (underpowered Ford Focus engine). That鈥檚 significantly weaker than the V6 engines offered in the Nissan NV, Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster. Its max towing capacity of 6,100 pounds is also more than the Mercedes and the Ram.



I'm just trying to get through the warranty and then I'm trading it in on a new Ford or Ram with the same body style. Of course, it鈥檚 not perfect and the system does get tripped up, but it is an adaptive system and will learn your speech pattern as times goes on, further refining how it responds to your commands. Updated 7/24/2017: Ford and Mazda resist a safety recall of the desiccated inflators, notifying NHTSA that they will petition for further study, saying data is insufficient to confirm that they pose a danger like that of the non-desiccated parts. I also got a recall notice about the airbags but the dealer said until they figure out what to do just hope I don't have an accident. The dealer agreed with me that both warnings are a safety issue but that they're not covered by the warranty. Less expensive models of each are powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 that makes 261 horsepower.



That said, you'll also need to shell out $985 for the Sprinter's optional V6, as the 4x4 package is not available on models equipped with the new, 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel that was introduced during the 2014 refresh. I prefer the crew or passenger model increased visibility the cargo versions do not offer, despite having backup camera option on all models (recommend). All the recalls are to replace front passenger inflators. Final Thoughts: Catering to my vanity, if you are going to drive a van, why not drive a Mercedes? Jan 2018 update: On my yearly cross country drive in 2017 I was stranded in NM in June 2017 for a couple of days. The Sprinter 3500XD is available with four-wheel drive. Mostly for engine light issues as well as all of the originally stated problems along with the loss of mpg. If even one doesn't come out easily it could end up costing an additional $3,000.00 just to replace the plugs because they would have to take the engine head off. 50,400 miles dropped to 16-17, even though I was told that it would get better around 35,000 miles when the engine was broken in. I just need to get this piece of junk back to PA in the spring so I can trade it off for a real vehicle. The fact is the 170 wheel base is more difficult to maneuver at trade shows and park than the 144 wheelbase option, and has more interior cabin road noise. I am a commercial van user and participate in lots of trade shows. I prefer the standard roof option over the high roof models, due to high wind instability experienced traveling cross country on multiple occasions with all Sprinter roof van roof options.
