That said, it鈥檚 arguably the most significant change to
Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 nomenclature since 1993, when the 鈥楥鈥?and 鈥楨
鈥?letters became prefixes on the badges of the automaker鈥檚 compact
and mid-size sedans, respectively. Announced in advance of next week鈥
檚 Los Angeles Auto Show, is that Mercedes-Benz will be moving to a 鈥渟
imple and transparent鈥?nomenclature. All SUVs will carry the 鈥楪
L鈥?prefix. So the lineup of utility vehicles will now include the GLA,
GLC (formerly GLK), GLE (formerly M-Class or ML), GLE Coupe, GLS
(previously GL). Four-door coupes鈥攆astbacks鈥攚ill get a 鈥楥
L鈥?prefix. CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, CLS, and CLS Shooting Brake are
given as examples. Roadsters will all include the 鈥楽L鈥?prefix鈥攕o
the SLK becomes the SLC. New lower-case letters will describe
powertrains: 鈥榗鈥?for natural gas (compressed gas); 鈥榙鈥?for
diesel; 鈥榚鈥?for electric; 鈥榝鈥?for fuel cell; and 鈥榟鈥?for
hybrid. What鈥檚 staying the same: Numerical suffixes that have
referred less directly to engine size over the years will be kept, and
will continue to correspond, generally, to relative size and power. So
for instance, the GLK250 Bluetec will soon be the GLC250d. And 4Matic
will continue to be the badge for models with all-wheel drive. It won鈥
檛 be an all-at-once transition, either. Those changes start next year
and will be phased in gradually, as models are up for a redesign or
major refresh. Beginning in 2015, it means that GL becomes GLS, ML
becomes GLE, and GLK becomes GLC. The changeover from SLK to SLC is due
in 2016 with a redesigned model. The other piece of news appropriately
timed with this badging announcement is that the Maybach name is back鈥
攖his time as a subbrand of Mercedes-Benz and, perhaps, a lavish
counterpoint to the newly redefined Mercedes-AMG performance subbrand.

Few vehicles are as over-specified for their typical habitat as the
2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 and the Mercedes-Benz G550. The automaker鈥檚
iconic 鈥淕 Wagon鈥?may be a legitimate off-roader, but its
unmistakable design is more familiar from Malibu than out in the mud.
With this latest generation, then, the question has to be whether
Mercedes has diluted the G-Class for the inevitable on-road tastes, or
if this rebooted beast is as flagrant as ever. It鈥檚 a bigger SUV than
it used to be. 2.1-inches longer, and 4.8-inches wider. You get more
shoulder space as a result and, most importantly, almost 6-inches more
legroom in the rear. Oddly there鈥檚 still only a regularly-sized
sunroof, rather than the expansive panoramic glass we鈥檙e used to from
modern luxury cars. You pay luxury car money, too. 147,500. Unusually,
sales of AMG鈥檚 version have typically hovered at 50-percent of the
mix. Maybe that鈥檚 because it unashamedly looks the part.
