A funny thing is happening with the extinct woolly mammoth: Russian
scientists are trying to clone one, using DNA extracted from a corpse
preserved in ice. Employing an elephant as a surrogate mother, they
seek to render the mammoth . Similarly, full-size luxury SUVs may
escape the boneyard previously thought to be their destiny thanks to
the clever application of science. Case in point: the 2015
Mercedes-Benz GL450. We called it a buffalo when we ran one through our
40,000-mile long-term-test regimen, noting that the category was
undergoing a steady, endangered-species-like decline. But sales have
rebounded strongly as of late; the GL-class is up 33 percent
year-over-year during the past three months. The body, chassis, and
even (for now) the name are the same in 2015, but the GL450 has been
genetically modified. Under the hood, where our 2013 long-termer housed
a mammoth, 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, there鈥檚 now a diminutive
3.0-liter V-6.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK first went on sale at the beginning of 2009 as a
2010 model, which means Mercedes鈥?baby G just celebrated its third
birthday. So the corporate parent is lavishing some attention on its
littlest SUV. Outside, there鈥檚 more chrome, LED lighting front and
rear, and a slightly redone front end. Inside, the driver is presented
with a new dashboard with a sportier, richer-looking instrument
cluster, and bisected by a large trim piece featuring prominent, round
air vents. The GLK350鈥檚 3.5-liter V-6 is a new, direct-injected unit,
and with it, output increases to 302 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque
鈥?up from 268 hp and 258 pound-feet. The seven-speed automatic
returns, although a dainty little column stalk now handles gear
selection, as per popular Benz practice. Mercedes鈥?automatic
stop/start system comes standard with this engine. The system works
well, although it鈥檚 not quite as seamless as you鈥檒l find in the
best hybrids. The bigger powertrain news arrives in January, in the
form of a diesel engine option. Unlike the six-cylinder oil-burner in
the ML and the GL, this is a four-cylinder diesel, the first
four-cylinder diesel in a U.S.

The latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the poshest and most
tech-rich cars on the road, at any price. That's set to change with the
next-generation Mercedes-AMG E63, a nearly here, twin-turbo 4.0-liter
V8 sledgehammer expected to marshal over 600 horsepower in S trim
(enough oomph to dispatch 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds). 52,150 E300,
whose 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder offers less than half the
power -- 241 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque -- and the forthcoming
E63. A gaping hole big enough to drive this 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 clean
through, in fact. It isn't just a larger engine under the hood that
gives the E43 the right to wear Affalterbach's fabled A-M-G script on
its trunk lid. It also receives a lot of other performance-minded
hardware, including a self-leveling air suspension with dedicated
sports tuning, standard 4Matic all-wheel drive with a more pronounced
rearward torque bias, and a quicker steering ratio.
