BMW will be premiering three new models at the LA Auto Show in November. We're expecting to see the 8 Series Convertible break cover, and it also seems likely that the X3 and X4 M will debut at the show since both models have recently been teased by BMW.
Last year, BMW M’s boss Frank van Meel said he was keen to give M-Performance SUVs the Competition Package treatment. It still isn’t clear which SUVs will get the upgrade, but a report by BMW Blog suggests the X3 M and X4 M will be available with optional Competition Packages.
Powering the first ever X3 M and X4 M will be BMW’s newly developed twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine codenamed S58. In its base form, the new unit is said to deliver around 450 horsepower, but higher specifications of the engine are rumored to develop over 500 hp.
The X3 M and X4 M Competition Packages are expected to deliver this level of power, allowing BMW to compete with other high-performance SUVs on the market like the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which both have over 500 hp on tap.
As well as a performance increase, the X3 M and X4 M Competition models should also have sportier suspension as well as visual changes to distinguish them from the regular X3 and X4. If previous Competition models are anything to go by, the upgraded X3 M and X4 M should debut a few months after the market launch of the standard models. According to BMW Blog, the X3 and X4 aren’t expected to debut until mid-2019, which seems surprising given BMW has already previewed both models.
