Complaint

Scraping noises when steering

Note:

Only affects vehicles fitted with a heat shield with aluminum ring as shown in Figure 1.

File/Designation

Mercedes-Benz A220 2020 Page 33

Cause

The steering boot heat shield with aluminum ring has loosened and is scraping on the steering shaft (Figure 1)

If the scraping of the aluminum ring on the steering shaft is not the cause of the scraping noises when steering, the problem is being caused by other

components. See other documents in Design Group 46.

Remedy

Replace steering boot heat shield with aluminum ring with a silicone heat

shield without aluminum ring:

Specify correct replacement part for vehicle through the EPC as indicated below in group 49.

Note:

The silicone heat shield is not a constituent part of the steering boot or of the steering boot repair kit. In the EPC this vehicle-specific component is

listed in Design Group 49 (Exhaust system) under 300 (Shields).

Removal:

- Separate lower steering shaft from steering column tube and steering coupling

- Remove steering shaft together with steering boot and heat shield towards the inside (see AR46.10-P-0621)

Installation:

- Fit new heat shield on lower steering shaft (Figure 2)

- Press silicone boot onto steering boot using assembly fluid if necessary. Observe correct alignment: The "TOP" marking on the silicone heat

shield must be positioned at 180锟斤拷 to the arrow marking on the steering boot

- Check that the steering boot is correctly seated on the lower steering shaft: The steering boot (black) must be uniformly visible across its diameter,

see arrow in Figure 3

- Fold over the bead of the steering boot; mount the lower steering shaft, with steering boot and silicone heat shield fitted, in the firewall and fold

back the bead of the steering boot, making sure that the arrow on the steering boot points downwards; in the engine compartment mount the

steering shaft on the steering coupling, making sure that the silicone heat shield is correctly seated

Example of silicone heat shield incorrectly fitted, see Figure 4
