Steering - Squeaking Noise From Column on Bumps

Steering Column Noise

R50 (Cooper) and R53 (Cooper S)



SITUATION



Customer may complain of a distinct squeaking noise heard from the top of steering column when the vehicle is driven over bumps or when the



steering wheel is turned.



PROCEDURE



Verify the customer complaint. Proceed with the following instructions only afier the customer complaint has been verified.



1. Remove the upper section of steering column trim. See Repair Instruction 32 31 004.

2. Apply one piece of felt tape on to the upper steering column area (1).



3. Remove the lower section of steering column trim. See Repair Instruction 32 31 020.



4. Apply one piece of felt tape on to the lower steering column area (2).



NOTES



Do not replace the steering column for the above situation. If the steering column has to be replaced for other reasons, please follow Repair



Instruction 32 31 090 and make sure that the two felt tape pieces are applied in the indicated upper and lower steering column areas.
