We recently wrote about the onslaught of seasonally well-timed topless motorcars coming to market. Another manufacturer has decided to join the fray鈥hat purveyor of luxurious, reliable, yet somewhat passionless automobiles鈥exus. In a move that should have been done a year or two ago, Lexus is finally coming to market with a topless version of its midsized IS sedan to compete with BMW鈥檚 3-series and Infinity鈥檚 G37. While much of the underpinnings are the same as the 4-door, the exterior of the baby Lexus only carries over only the hood, as all other body panels have changed. The car is also 2鈥?longer, which was added to the rear increasing trunk capacity with the top down. Unfortunately we feel there is a bit of an aesthetic penalty for this addition, but many still feel the car to be a head-turner. A quick rundown of the spec sheet shows the same engine and transmission choices available as in the IS four door. Of these we prefer the larger direct-injected 3.5 liter V6 with 306 hp and 277 lb-ft. Sure, the extra power adds to the fun factor, but it also helps to offset the convertible鈥檚 nearly 500 lb. So, what is the bottom line here..? It will all depend on your priority list. If you value a sporting nature in your automobiles, the BMW or Infinity should top your list. If stunning looks are a premium, check out Audi鈥檚 A5 ragtop. If however you want a smidgen of everything with a corporate history of reliability thrown in, then head to your Lexus dealer for a test drive. The IS convertibles should be in showrooms by the end of the month.
In 1885, Tesla received funding for the Tesla Electric Light Company and was tasked by his investors to develop improved arc lighting. After successfully doing so, however, Tesla was forced out of the venture and for a time had to work as a manual laborer in order to survive. His luck would change two years later, when he received funding for his new Tesla Electric Company. However, doubts arose among his investors about the plausibility of Tesla's system. As his rival, Guglielmo Marconi 鈥?with the financial support of Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Edison 鈥?continued to make great advances with his own radio technologies, Tesla had no choice but to abandon the project. The Wardenclyffe staff was laid off in 1906, and by 1915 the site had fallen into foreclosure. Two years later Tesla declared bankruptcy and the tower was dismantled and sold for scrap to help pay the debts he had accrued. After suffering a nervous breakdown following the closure of his free energy project, Tesla eventually returned to work, primarily as a consultant. But as time went on, his ideas became progressively more outlandish and impractical.
He grew increasingly eccentric, devoting much of his time to the care of wild pigeons in the parks of New York City. Tesla even drew the attention of the FBI with his talk of building a powerful "death ray," which had received some interest from the Soviet Union during World War II. How Did Nikola Tesla Die? Poor and reclusive, Nikola Tesla died of a coronary thrombosis on January 7, 1943, at the age of 86, in New York City, where he had lived for nearly 60 years. However the legacy of the work Tesla left behind him lives on to this day. In 1994, a street sign identifying "Nikola Tesla Corner" was installed near the site of his former New York City laboratory, at the intersection of 40th Street and 6th Avenue. The Secret of Nikola Tesla, a 1980 biographical film starring Orson Welles as J. P. Morgan. Nikola Tesla, The Genius Who Lit the World, a 1994 documentary produced by the Tesla Memorial Society and the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia. The Prestige, a 2006 fictional film about two magicians directed by Christopher Nolan, with rock star David Bowie portraying Tesla. Since Tesla's original forfeiture of his free energy project, ownership of the Wardenclyffe property has passed through numerous hands. Several attempts have been made to preserve it, but in 1967, 1976 and 1994 efforts to have it declared a national historic site failed. Then, in 2008, a group called the Tesla Science Center (TSC) was formed with the intention of purchasing the property and turning it into a museum dedicated to the inventor's work. 1.6 million, and for the next several years, the TSC worked diligently to raise funds for its purchase.

Ministerial action to actively incentivise millions of motorists to buy diesel cars - and then later penalise them for doing so - could be 鈥榰nlawful鈥?and leave the Government open to a major legal challenge, lawyers have warned. Damon Parker, partner at law firm Harcus Sinclair, told Auto Express: 鈥淭here is evidence that the previous Government promoted diesel car sales on a knowingly false basis. On the basis of the evidence, the Government has a case to answer. The revelation comes days after new diesel car tax increases were announced in the autumn Budget. Cities like London are clamping down on diesel drivers, having recently introduced the 拢10 T-Charge that applies to older vehicles. The 鈥榙ash for diesel鈥?began under Tony Blair鈥檚 Labour Government, as ministers focused on lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to meet the 1997 Kyoto Agreement targets. But they ignored the danger from particulates, which are now blamed for up to 40,000 premature deaths a year. In 2001, Labour Chancellor Gordon Brown lowered Vehicle Excise Duty for diesels and reduced the duty paid on diesel, which was promoted as a 鈥榞reen鈥?fuel. He added: 鈥淭oday, the same vehicles successive Governments pushed on the back of their environmental qualities are now being hit by additional tax and other deterrents. Howard Cox, of campaign group FairFuelUK, said it is considering legal action. AA president Edmund King said that while it鈥檚 unclear whether a legal challenge could succeed, 鈥渋t鈥檚 clear the Government misled millions of drivers over diesel鈥? Do you feel you鈥檙e being unfairly treated for buying a diesel car? Tell us what you think of the situation below.
