While the lever appears to be long, the throws are not, and it鈥檚 a very pleasant overall experience. The clutch takes up immediately off the floor, and while it does lack a certain amount of feedback, it makes up for that by being incredibly flexible. Heal/toe downshifts are possible thanks to good pedal spacing and a properly firm brake pedal. On the road, the A4 is quite comfortable. The ride is firm, but not jarring, even with the sport suspension and 18鈥?high performance tires. We found the seats to be nicely comfortable on long drives, yet supportive in spirited driving. There is enough range in adjustment that anyone should be able to find a perfect driving position. This car is very nice to drive. It鈥檚 very responsive, and amenable to doing double duty as a commuter car and a canyon carving sports sedan. One very minor gripe we came up with is a very noticeable surging from the engine while cruising at lower revs (specifically in the 1800 to 2200 range).

We suspect that the always eager turbocharger is the culprit here; the engine management appears to constantly fiddle with the turbocharger bypass system in order to maintain the speed that鈥檚 requested by the driver. This is the tradeoff with a turbocharger that will generate boost at such low revs, and in all honesty, it鈥檚 not that big of a problem, but it is something we noticed. Another benefit of this engine is excellent fuel economy. We were amazed at the mileage we were seeing, and it鈥檚 not that we were necessarily gentle with the accelerator pedal. Because of the abundance of low end torque, the car reaches cruising speeds very rapidly, and once attained, the engine鈥檚 load becomes light, and therefore fuel economy increases. According to the trip computer we averaged around 30mpg (which did include a couple of long highway drives) while we had the car which was a very nice surprise. The interior of the A4 shows off Audi鈥檚 traditional attention to detail. Cruising in the A4 is calm and quiet. The interior is very hushed with the windows closed, wind noise is minimal, although road noise is somewhat present. In 6th gear, the revs are so low that the engine note is reduced to a very low hum. As revs increase, the engine takes on a nice mid tone growl. At no point do you get to hear the turbo though, which is a bit of a bummer honestly.

As an instrument of driving joy, the Porsche Macan is a whole different kind of special. Good as Porsche鈥檚 241bhp, 3.0-litre oil burner is, if we鈥檙e going to compare this to a sportscar, it should have a petrol engine, right? In the Indian line-up, the only petrol variant is the Turbo. Yes, I know, all Macans are turbocharged, but only the most powerful versions of Porsche鈥檚 cars get the privilege of wearing the Turbo badge, so this one has a lot to live up to. It starts by packing in a large 3.6-litre V6 with two turbochargers strapped to it, a powertrain that is unique to the Macan. That鈥檚 because, unlike the Cayenne which feels big and heavy despite the intense acceleration, this one just doesn鈥檛 feel its size. It鈥檚 like a chunky, AWD hot hatchback with a seemingly endless power supply. And that鈥檚 true of the way it behaves in corners too.

Hunkered down as it is in Sport Plus, there鈥檚 a bewildering lack of body roll, or any drama at all for that matter. You鈥檇 have to be seriously reckless with the throttle through a bend if you want to unsettle it, so immense is the grip. The steering, at least in this mode, is just so crisp, quick and pinpoint accurate. And I鈥檓 not sure how Porsche does it, but like the Cayenne, this thing does all this while also being able to ride really comfortably. Yes, there鈥檚 a bit of a stiff edge, but you can only feel it on the worst of roads at low speeds. The rest of the time, it just steamrolls everything. As with all its models these days, the Macan Turbo鈥檚 base price doesn鈥檛 give you a stripped out car onto which you have to add basic equipment from the options list. You do get a good amount of standard kit; in fact there鈥檚 a bit more than even the diesel car, including the amazing 18-way adjustable sports front seats. But this is a Porsche, so you can still go much further with options, like the 20-inch wheels - not necessary on a sensible diesel, but on a Turbo, why not. You also get a more aggressive front bumper and square, rather than round, tailpipes. As before, the elephant in the room is the price. At Rs 1.11 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), it鈥檚 Rs 11 lakh more than the already exorbitant Diesel S. When you consider that luxury SUVs of a similar size cost almost half as much, you might cringe a little. But this is the greatest handling SUV in the world, remember? And if you鈥檙e going all-out with the Turbo, it means that practicality certainly isn鈥檛 your consideration. What you鈥檙e getting for your money is a true-blue (literally, in this case) sportscar that can also go anywhere. And yes, it has earned the badge on its boot.
