Driving on the streets around Tesla鈥檚 Fremont factory for 10 minutes is hardly a thorough road test, but the car feels plenty zippy and handles well. Plant your foot on the go pedal and the rear wheels chirp, then you鈥檙e off. The best way to sum up the Model 3 is to call it a mini-Model S, and we mean that as high praise. The Model 3 is less powerful, smaller, more spartan, and鈥攃rucially鈥攎ore affordable. 9000 long-range battery (which also allows for slightly faster charge speeds, both from Tesla鈥檚 Supercharger high-speed charging network as well as commercial and residential Level 2 chargers). The longer-range battery adds 265 pounds to the curb weight, so there鈥檚 no software upgrade to be had here. Tesla is moving away from the battery-capacity-driven naming scheme that has graced the Model S and X since their launch. Gone are the 60/70/75/80/P100D nameplates, in favor of the 鈥渟tandard鈥?220-mile and 鈥淟ong Range鈥?310-mile battery options. The standard battery offers a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, while the Long Range version zips to 60 in 5.1 seconds, according to Tesla. Top speed with the bigger battery is 140 mph, although driving that fast is sure to drain the battery in a hurry. The Model 3 is available in six colors (Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, Silver Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat). 3000. Of the latter, Tesla says: 鈥淚n the future, Model 3 will be capable of conducting trips with no action required by the person in the driver鈥檚 seat. Even without the self-driving capability, our first impressions are very positive. Assuming Tesla can build enough Model 3s and keep the build quality up鈥攂oth big ifs鈥擡lon Musk has a hit on his hands.
We come across plenty of classic cars valued in the seven-figure range. It鈥檚 a far rarer proposition to see one that could crack eight figures (tens of millions). But that鈥檚 just what we have here. 10 million or more. It鈥檚 a 250 GT Competizione Tour de France from 1957. That鈥檚 the model that inspired the ultimate version of the modern F12. And it鈥檚 one of only 72 made. The 250 TdF packed a 3.0-liter V12, capable of producing 258 horsepower. 25k with a turbo four kicking out more power than that. But back in the late 1950s, that was a heck of a lot. The Mercedes 300 SL of that era offered just 212 hp. And it would be another couple of decades before Porsche would put out a version of the 911 - the original 930 Turbo - that would be capable of that level of output. This example was the 15th of 17 made in the third of four series. That means it has the louvered vents and covered headlights. Having fared no better than a second-place finish at Spa in 鈥?8, it isn鈥檛 the most decorated of TdFs. RM Sotheby鈥檚 estimates it will sell for between 鈧?7 and 鈧?9 million. 8.5-10.9 million. So if it lands somewhere in the upper half of that range, the winning bidder will be looking at an eight-figure bill.
If Bulgarian tuner Vilner was Santa Claus, then their sleigh would be this gorgeous 1990 BMW M3 Evo. The classic sports coupe finished in Imola Red II, a shade that covers all exterior panels, except for the carbon fiber bumper, though, don鈥檛 look for it here as it wasn鈥檛 ready for the photo shoot. Tinted Hella headlights with wipers, special taillights and a set of lightweight 18-inch rims from BBS complete the design of this impressive BMW M3, making it look fresh. Remember the last word, because it best describes the cabin of the car. Here, Vilner added Sparco front seats, with five-point racing harness, wrapped in checkered textile fabric with leather edges. The tuner has used the same fabric on the doors, gear lever, roof and parcel shelf, and calls is 鈥渟uper functional, robust and comfortable, especially during the hot season鈥? Described as 鈥渁rguably one of the best on the Balkan Peninsula鈥? this special BMW M3 Evolution tips the scales at 1,200 kg. At its heart lies a 3,201cc inline-six engine, from an M3 E36, which pushes out 321 PSand 350 Nm of torque, directing the output to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.
Set to make its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Alpina XD3 positions itself as perhaps the sportiest iteration of the new X3, at least until BMW finishes their work on the upcoming X3 M model. It鈥檚 certainly the most powerful version as it features a quad-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six diesel engine with common-rail high-pressure direct injection, producing 388 hp and a humongous 770 Nm of peak torque. Strapped to it is an eight-speed automatic transmission that鈥檚 connected to a reconfigured xDrive all-wheel drive system, featuring specific torque distribution for the new Alpina XD3. Alpina claims a 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 266 km/h which sounds fast enough for an SUV of this size, especially a diesel-powered one. Right-hand drive examples however will be driven by a less crazy, twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six diesel engine with 333 hp and still a very impressive 700 Nm of peak torque. The less powerful engine is still paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Alpina鈥檚 reconfigured xDrive all-wheel drive system. Performance remains strong, with the 0-100 km/h requiring 4.9 seconds and top speed set at 254 km/h. The chassis features Alpina鈥檚 sport suspension which employs electronically adjustable dampers together with an active rear limited differential to ensure class-leading handling. A set of the trademark 20-inch Alpina wheels is fitted as standard, with 22-inch lightweight forged items being an option.
