5. Modify the airbag ground wiring harness.
5.1 The airbag ground leads are branched out of the previous wiring harness and connected to the ground point as a separate lead. There is
a ground point under each seat (ground point 6 or 7 on the circuit diagram).
5.2 Unwrap banding of the ground lead over a length of approx. 20 cm in the area of the lead connection point. Unscrew the ground lead
from the ground point.
5.3 Work on the leads with 0.5 mm cross section (brown) coming out of the connection point.
Caution!
Risk of damage to the leads for child seat detection!
> If present, the wiring harness for the child-seat detection feature is located on the passenger's side.
> The plug housing for the two leads (brown or brown/orange, 0.5 mm) is then tied near the ground lead.
> Do not work on the leads for child seat detection!
5.3.1 Cut off the 0.5 mm cross section leads directly at the connector point (Figure 9). There can be up to four leads, depending on how the
vehicle is equipped.
5.3.2 Trim the service set lead (brown, 1.5 mm, 500 mm long) on the ground point.
Note:
The lead should be approx. 50 mm longer (allowance for wire-end ferrule and shrink tubing).
5.3.3 Strip approx. 12 mm of insulation from the ends of the cut-off leads and the service set lead, and then twist the ends together.
5.3.4 Insert all leads into the 4 x 9 wire-end ferrule (See Figure 3) from one side and join them with the crimping pliers.
5.3.5 Solder the leads and the wire-end ferrule together at the tip (See, Figure 4, Item B).
5.3.6 Insulate the soldered joint with 6 x 35 shrink tubing. Close the open end of the shrink tubing hose using a pair of flat-nosed pliers (See
Figure 4, Item C).
5.3.7 Place the new lead against the previous ground lead. Bundle the leads using electrical tape.
5.4 Clean the screw thread and the seat of the ground point using a narrow steel-wire brush. Remove all paint residue.
5.5 Install ground leads on the ground point.
Caution!
Airbag warning light lights up if ground lead tie-wrap is incorrectly fastened.
> The airbag must be fixed to the ground point right at the bottom.
5.6 Bundle the ground leads again. Add more banding if necessary.
