Muscle Car Madness: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1
Click Here to Begin Slideshow The sound could shake dentures out of a mouth. The engine cackles as if lined up at a drag strip Christmas tree, so I鈥檓 not surprised when Luke Chin tells me the police have stopped him in the past for exceeding the maximum 鈥榣oud exhaust鈥?violation. 鈥淔ortunately, I had two new mufflers in the trunk, so the cop let me go with a warning,鈥?he recalls. It snorts to life with a throaty rumble that could be construed as God鈥檚 implacable anger. A lick of flame bursts from the chrome mouth of the exhaust and I鈥檓 mesmerized. 鈥淒riving it is therapeutic.鈥?That is how Luke describes driving his 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. The car, a bulk of Herculean muscle, is painted in a shade of sinister black. 鈥淲hen I bought it, the paint had worn its replacement black from its Royal Maroon, so I repainted it jet black,鈥?he explains.
It had a solid lifter camshaft, however a four barrel carburetor was retained. It produced 275 hp (205 kW) using the new SAE net system. The Q-code "351 Cobra Jet" version was produced from May 1971 through the 1974 model year. It was a low-compression design that included open-chamber "4V" heads, a special intake manifold, special hi-lift long duration hydraulic camshaft, special valve springs and dampers, a 750 CFM 4300-D Motorcraft Carburetor, dual-point distributor, and 4-bolt main bearing caps. It was rated at 266 hp (198 kW) (SAE net) for 1972 when installed in the Mustang and 248 hp in the Ford Torino and Mercury Montego. The horsepower rating dropped in 1973 to 246 hp for the 4-barrel for the intermediate Fords, and still retained the higher 266 hp rating in the Mustang. The 351 CJ (now referred to simply as the "351 4V") was rated at 255 hp in 1974 and was only installed in the Ford Torino, Mercury Montego and the Mercury Cougar. Ford introduced the Flathead V8 in their affordable 1932 Model B, becoming a performance leader for decades.
In the 1950s, Ford introduced a three-tier approach to engines, with small, mid-sized, and big block engines aimed at different markets. All of Ford's mainstream V8 engines were replaced by the overhead cam Modular family in the 1990s, however the company is expected to introduce a new larger family, the Boss/Hurricane, by the end of the decade. The dash, center console, steering wheel and seats will all get the leather treatment while the door trim panels and headliner should see Alcantara. As with the rest of the story, details surrounding the Mach-E鈥檚 performance capabilities are slim. What we do know is that it will ride on a completely different platform than the S550 and S650 Mustang. Ford could alter and change the platform used for Edge, Explorer, or Expedition, but that isn鈥檛 likely either as none of those models currently support an electric or hybrid drivetrain. In fact, Ford鈥檚 largest electric and hybrid vehicles right now are the Focus and Fusion, neither of which have a platform that would be an ideal candidate for a Mustang-based SUV with an electric drivetrain. So, with that in mind, a modified version of one of Ford鈥檚 current platforms is more likely, but the brand could develop an all-new platform that will eventually underpin a range of electric SUVs and Crossovers. The brand has big plans in the EV world, and the platform for the Mach-E will serve as the go-to architecture for its future endeavors, so an all-new platform is more likely.
