Ford Confirms Its EV Crossover Will Be Named The Mustang Mach-E
We know that the Mach-E will have a 370-mile range and support fast-charging. Ford has bragged about its acceleration, handling and all-weather ability. The company is clearly hoping this will appeal to both EV enthusiasts and diehard Mustang fans. The fact that this will exist under the Mustang name speaks to the confidence Ford has in the vehicle. We've seen Ford pack a 900-plus horsepower electric motor and six-speed manual transmission into an EV project car, but we'll have to wait for the reveal event for more details on the Mach-E motor. That event begins Sunday, November 17th, at 9:30PM ET, and the livestream will be hosted by actor Idris Elba. Ford has also announced the 2020 Ford Escape and Explorer, both of which will come in plug-in hybrid variants. 850 million in its Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly plant, in hopes of making the plant home to its EV production. It's also developing a fully electric F-series pickup truck, and it may partner with Volkswagen on commercial vans and pickups.
The rear end sports even more Mustang-inspired features, starting with the taillights. Just like on the muscle car, they鈥檙e made from three vertical light bars, almost identical to the Mustang鈥檚 tri-bar setup. The big difference is that the lights are fitted in a horizontal carve into the body that extends into the tailgate. It somehow mimics traditional horizontal lights to keep things familiar for SUV customers. The license plate recess is mounted in the bumper, just below the tailgate, a placement that鈥檚 also similar to the Mustang. The bumper itself is also similar, save for the missing diffuser and exhaust pipes. Ford will probably introduce a higher performance version with a diffuser-like element later on. A roof spoiler rounds off the coupe-style upper section of the rear end. The all-electric SUV will break cover on November 17 and you鈥檒l be able to place online reservations that same day. However, the Mach-E we will see in Los Angeles might not be the final production model.
Ford will probably introduce a pre-production version to give us a taste of the final design. This also means that output and efficiency figures will be rough estimates. The actual numbers will probably roll out sometime in 2020, before the final production model arrives at an important auto show or event. What do we know about the Ford Mach-E? While the name is not yet official, we do know a few things about this electric crossover. Performance specs are still a mystery as of this writing, but I鈥檓 pretty sure that the Mach-E will have a two-motor layout. This is already an industry standard for electric SUVs, so expect this EV to have a motor for each axle. The Mach-E should deliver around 400 horsepower in base form, an output that would put it on par with most vehicles from this market. But it鈥檚 not out of the question to see an affordable model with just one motor and less output. At the same time, Ford will probably roll out a beefed-up version with more than 500 horsepower to go against wilder EVs built by Tesla.

Tesla has addressed that concern in part by building a network of charging stations exclusively for its cars. 鈥淭hat infrastructure is a big advantage for Tesla,鈥?said Mike Ramsey, an analyst for the research firm Gartner. Ford customers will be able to use charging stations operated by two companies, Electrify America and ChargePoint, which together have 12,000 locations around the United States. The base Mustang Mach E will have a range of more than 200 miles, said Ted Cannis, Ford鈥檚 global director of electrification. A higher-priced version will be able to go 300 miles on a charge. The five-seat S.U.V. borrows some of the features that Tesla has pioneered. Most of the interior controls are on a large touch screen on the center console, and Ford said it would be able to add or improve features through over-the-air software updates. 7,500 federal tax credit, Mr. Cannis said.
