Ford鈥檚 Mustang-inspired Electric SUV Could Debut This Year

Ford鈥檚 Mustang-inspired Electric SUV Could Debut This Year

We鈥檝e known for quite some time that Ford is working on an all-electric SUV inspired by its iconic Mustang car. We鈥檝e also been told to expect the model only in 2022. But a new report by the Autocar website says that we could see the Mach E or whatever it will eventually be called debut before the year is out. There鈥檚 a big caveat here, of course: we鈥檙e talking about a concept version. Still, with the Tesla Model Y hitting the market this year, Ford has no time to lose. Development of the SUV, which could be called the Mach E or the Mustang Mach E depending on which rumour you pay attention to, has been fast-tracked in recent months. For the moment, we still have no detailed information about the upcoming EV, though we do know where at least a part of its DNA will come from. European cycle testing refers to a range of close to 600 km, which would come to between 400 and 500 km in North America. It鈥檚 likely several different battery capacities would be offered to buyers, with pricing following range. It鈥檚 also clear the model will be performance-oriented - that Mustang DNA and all! Bill Ford Jr. himself declared this past February that the SUV would need 鈥渢o go like hell鈥? We know as well that the model will be built on a platform designed specifically for electric vehicles. Perhaps we shouldn鈥檛 be totally shocked about the change in plans. Ford is in the midst of a massive restructuring plan and it needs to add models to a lineup depleted by the cancellation of virtually all of the company鈥檚 cars in North America.

Available as a hard top only, the Bullitt was a mildly upgraded version of the standard GT. Designed to be a handling-based vehicle as opposed to an all-out-bruiser, the car was factory upgraded with a lowered suspension (3/4 inch), subframe connectors from the convertible models, new Tokico shocks, and brakes from the Cobra (13-inch front, 11.7-inch rear). The car also received an upgraded exhaust, a re-designed intake, and underdrive pullies. These power upgrades led to a factory rating of 265hp, a gain of 5hp over the standard GT. On the exterior, the car received unique Torq-Thrust style wheels, removal of the fog lights and rear deck spoiler, and new trim accents. It was available in 3 colors: Dark Highland Green, True Blue, and Black. The success of the 2001 Bullitt led to the production of a second special edition, the 2003-2004 Mach 1. This Mustang was a new model and not simply an upgraded GT. In 2003, Ford updated the Fox-based Cobra for the last time.

Internally known during its development as the "Terminator," this Cobra featured a 4.6 liter V8 similar to the older Cobra. However, it was a radical change with the addition of an Eaton supercharger and an air to water intercooler resulting in 390 horsepower (291 kW) and 390 ft路lbf (394 Nm) of torque. To cope with increased power, Ford replaced the 5 speed Tremec T-45 transmission with the heavier-duty 6 speed Tremec T-56, which was also found in the Dodge Viper as well as the Chevrolet Corvette and the now discontinued Camaro Z28. Engineers improved handling by altering suspension geometries and fitting more aggressive tires, achieving 0.90 g on the skidpad. Unlike the 1999 SVT Cobra, these cars produced significantly more horsepower than the official Ford claims. Most stock '03-'04 Cobras were dyno tested between 410 and 420 HP. From the factory, the '03-'04 Cobras ran 1/4 miles in the mid to upper 12's with trap speeds over 110 mph. In 2002, Ford Motor Company organized the charity auction of 51 concept and memorabilia cars, as the company marked its 99th anniversary. The cars at the auction included mustang concept car that named Mach III. Mach III was released in 1993, Body style was 2-door convertible, and It equipped the eight-cylinder engine. It later became the base for Fourth Generation.

I agree, but I鈥檓 a bit disappointed that they decided to target the Model Y so specifically. There are many different categories of vehicles begging to go electric. Pitting their first serious (non-compliance) BEV precisely head-to-head against the Y may not be the best strategy. So, they should have avoided the crossover segment? Looks OK. Wonder how you open the door as I don't see any handle. They said at one point that features can be added through over the air updates. Made me feel that these over the air updates aren't free, hope for all the buyers that I am wrong about that. There's a push-button on the B-pillar. You push it, the door pops open, you grab the edge of the door. The front doors also have a tiny black handle right on the trim at the base of the windshield, which is just something additional you could grab instead of the door edge. Rear doors don't have it. I decided to reserve one! My 2013 Model S has almost no tech. I wonder if they will enable carplay? Yes. Wireless (or wired if you want) CarPlay is supported. Wireless works well in combo with the wireless phone charging tray. No, create an account now. Formed in 2006, Tesla Motors Club (TMC) was the first independent online Tesla community.
