Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet Great For Social Networking, Al Fresco

Been thinking about a new set of wheels? Has your practical self (or significant other) been warring with your hedonistic spirit? Been thinking about a new set of wheels? Has your practical self (or significant other) been warring with your hedonistic spirit? Could be time to let some fresh air in.Mercedes-Benz's E-Class Cabriolet(with Car DVD) is a sexy, fun-to-drive two-door convertible that pampers all four of its occupants. That's right, unlike a number of 2-plus-2 drop tops on the market, two full-size, comfortable seats ensure that backseaters won't feel like second-class citizens. The seats offer 30.1 inches of legroom. For perspective, the four-door E-Class sedan's rear passengers have just 5.7 more inches to work with. The convertible's back seats are separated by a sharp-looking veneered console which makes shoulder room a moot point. A thoughtful touch: integrated headrests extend automatically when a rear seat is occupied but otherwise are retracted for minimal intrusion of the driver's rear field of view. Unless reaching 130 mph (the top speed of both models) a little quicker is vital, we say show your practical self some love and stick with the E400 Cabriolet.

This is, after all, a sporty, luxury cruiser, not a hardcore performance machine. We'd venture that an infinitesimal portion of E-Class Cabriolet buyers in the U.S. 100 mph, let alone confirm Mercedes-Benz's rated speed ceiling. 60,000-plus, the E-Class Cabriolet comes with a long list of standard goodies. Information and entertainment technology is the new horsepower of the early 21st century and the E-Class Cab has that arena covered. Standard are Android Car Stereo, SD card reader, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free mobile device interface, USB port and HD radio. But mbrace, a standard included five-year program, can go deeper than convenience and fun. Of course, no German premium vehicle would be complete without a buffet of option packages. 6,400 price difference between the E400 and E550? Check the Mercedes-Benz website and you'll see plenty of ways you can use that money. Our loaner came with the Premium 1 Package, virtually the basic building block of any custom-ordered E-Class Cabriolet. The luxurious E400 Cabriolet is an inviting, fun-to-drive machine that's suitable for work or pleasure and proves that compromise doesn't have to sting. If installing a Car DVD Player, that would be great!

The transmission is a crisp-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch unit. The motor is one of the best things about the A220. Does it deliver a mountain of horsepower? No. But the combo of ponies and available torque makes for snappy driving, and the AMG performance goodies added to the car mean you鈥檙e getting a platform that can be pushed to max out its potential. So what鈥檚 the verdict on the Mercedes A220 4Matic sedan? Apart from my reservations about the design, which aren鈥檛 terribly substantial, I really liked the A220. It鈥檚 a capable daily driver, and even though its trunk isn鈥檛 huge, it鈥檚 big enough to provide some versatility for weekend road trips and grocery store runs. The back seat is snug, but this is a subcompact sedan, so expecting more would be pointless. With a passel of performance features added in, I found the A220 to be one of those cars whose power can be fully accessed by mere mortals. Too many driver-oriented cars have so much punch that owners never get to use their vehicle鈥檚 full potential.

Not so with the A220. I felt that I could grab all 188 ponies and 221 pound-feet of torque and direct it joyfully to the the wheels. The 0-60 mph time is about six seconds, which is plenty quick. You鈥檙e also going to get reasonable fuel-economy, something in the ballpark of 30 mpg (the official numbers are 24 city/ 35 highway/ 28 combined). Impressive, and a strong argument for torque-y little turbo fours. 2,250 Driver Assistance Package that combines assorted safety features - lane-keep assist, blind-spot-assist, evasive steering - with some semi-self-driving tech, such as steering assist and augmented adaptive cruise control. They all worked as advertised, although I enjoyed driving the A220 so much that I didn鈥檛 rely on them. Admittedly, there are cheaper four-doors in the world. But if the Mercedes name appeals to you - and it should, because Mercedes is doing some nice stuff these days with its cars and SUVs - the A220 is an excellent starting point. 50,000, but it was optioned up the Teutonic wazoo; the A220 with front-wheel-drive and diminished tech can be had for far less.
