Looks like Buick is planning to refresh the LaCrosse for the 2020 model year, as photos of the updated full-size luxury sedan have leaked online. Auto Verdict discovered the photos on the website of China's patent and trademark office, so we’re looking at the model that will go on sale in the Chinese market. However, the same changes should also apply to the US 2020 Buick LaCrosse.
Noticeable changes for the 2020 MY include slimmer headlights and taillights, bringing the large sedan more in-line with other recent Buick models. The taillights make the 2020 LaCrosse look virtually identical to the Regal, while the grille has been enlarged and features wings stretching beneath the headlights like the new Enclave and Regal models.
Aside from the updated styling, we’re not expecting the 2020 Buick LaCrosse to have any major mechanical changes since the current-generation LaCrosse, which rides on a new platform, has only been on sale since 2017. Expect the 2020 Buick LaCrosse to be available with a 3.6-liter V6 that delivers 310 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque and a standard 2.5-liter, four-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain, which was introduced for the 2018 model. A Buick LaCrosse hybrid is also sold exclusively in China.
There aren’t any images of the updated cabin available, but if there are any changes, they will probably be minor.
It’s no secret that sedan sales are declining in the US, and the Buick LaCrosse is no exception. In 2019, Buick shipped 20,161 units in the US, which is less than half the number sold five years ago. It didn’t come as a surprise, then, when reports claimed General Motors is planning to drop the LaCrosse from its line-up, but it looks like the redesigned sedan will remain on sale for at least another year.
It’s a different story in China though, where there’s still a strong demand for large sedans. The leaked images suggest the 2020 Buick LaCrosse will break cover soon, possibly at the Guangzhou Motor Show in China and the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.
