This year I had the privilege of racing two boats at the USRowing Club Nationals in Bethel, Ohio. Before we showed up and raced, my club trained for three weeks straight with double-practice (i.e. AM and PM) from Monday to Saturday. Those three weeks were the longest most draining weeks of my whole life, mentally and physically. Not only to me but to everyone else in the team. This opportunity has taught me discipline and broke me down so I could be better at what I love doing.
Preparing for Nationals
Training started on June 17th to July 6th, morning practice from 8:00am to 10:30am then we had a three hour break and afternoon practice from 2:00pm to 4:30pm. The most exhausting part of training was being at the boathouse so many hours. During our break hours the coxswains got together and would go over recordings and talk to the varsity coach about how we can make our recordings better.
Racing at Nationals
I raced a U17 coxed four and a U19 coxed four, since it was my first year at club nationals I did not get the best boats but it was still worth it, my U17 four was two seconds off from qualifying and my U19 four came in 28th place out of 42 boats in our category. My club’s overall performance was not the best; only four of our boats placed, but it was still a great experience.
At club nationals USRowing organizes the college fair for rising seniors and juniors, unfortunately I am a rising sophomore so I was not able to get a peek into what it takes to get recruited for college rowing. In the future, I will definitely be writing about this process.
Well that’s all for this post, stay tuned for my post about preparing for varsity try outs and being accepted into the varsity team.
