2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe First Review

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe First Review

The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe鈥檚 dual-nature driving dynamics are echoed by its multi-functional interior design. An exterior design this sporty might suggest compromised interior space, yet the cabin provides excellent head, shoulder and legroom for 6-foot adults in all four seating positions. The wrap-around dash flows into the front doors, featuring two large 12.3-inch displays bracketed by plush leather and contrasting stitching. The new AMG steering wheel offers Mercedes鈥?Touch Control Buttons, allowing for full control of the infotainment system without using the center console interface. The seat design for both front and rear passengers further reflects the AMG GT鈥檚 dual purpose. These seats provide the same range of adjustments found on traditional luxury sedans, yet their racecar style and lateral bolstering support aggressive track driving at closed-course facilities like COTA. An Executive Rear Seat Package offers folding rear seat backs and a digital touch screen for full climate control and infotainment access. Rear passengers also benefit from multiple USB ports and wireless phone charging. Among the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe鈥檚 premium features is a Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound system with 23 speakers and 1450 watts.

It features 鈥?D鈥?speakers in the roof liner that, according to Mercedes-AMG, can expand the sound stage beyond the GT鈥檚 interior dimensions. 63鈥?cabin fragrance, incorporated into the Energizing Comfort Package. One look at the new 2019 AMG GT 4-Door Coupe makes it clear which model Mercedes-AMG is targeting with this new performance sedan. The Porsche Panamera has served family-oriented performance enthusiasts for nearly a decade, and Mercedes-AMG wants in. Both cars offer a range of performance engines and capabilities wrapped in a sweeping four-dour coupe design. The AMG GT 4-Door is also a more extreme take on the Mercedes-Benz CLS, ensuring Mercedes-AMG has a entrant in the growing 鈥渇our-door coupe鈥?segment. A turbocharged inline 6 or a twin-turbocharged V8 power the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, depending on model designation. Both engines are mated to a 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, and both offer impressive acceleration and top speed numbers.

When I was growing up, my parents鈥?general policy was to only make rules about things with long-term consequences. I wasn鈥檛 supposed to get a tattoo before I graduated from high school, for example, but I could dress myself and cut my hair the way I wanted. Over the years, I made some pretty cringe-worthy fashion choices, but with three boys to raise, my parents preferred to spend their energy getting us into college and keeping us out of jail. When I drove the 2019 BMW X4 recently, I couldn鈥檛 help thinking about my parents鈥?old rules. I don鈥檛 understand the appeal of coupe-like crossovers, and still, I have yet to see one I think looks good. A decade from now, the X4 will probably look about as cool as a pair of baggy cargo shorts or an unbuttoned dress shirt worn over a T-shirt. But coupe-like crossovers are hot right now, so why get worked up that BMW鈥檚 gotten in on the trend? Compared to the low bar that was the previous-generation X4, the 2019 model is certainly an improvement. It鈥檚 longer, wider, and slightly lower, with a stiffer chassis, lower curb weight, and a more aerodynamic shape.

The designers also did a better job of integrating the fastback roofline with the new X3鈥檚 front end. Although the old version looked cobbled together, the redesigned model has a much more cohesive exterior design. Inside, the X4鈥檚 cabin looks like it was pulled straight out of the X3, with only a few accommodations made for the sloping roof. Considering how cheap the first-gen X4鈥檚 interior felt, that鈥檚 a good thing. BMW used significantly nicer materials this time around that, when paired with the cabin鈥檚 more modern design, make the X4 feel much more luxurious. That said, the interior isn鈥檛 quite up to the standard set by the X4鈥檚 most direct competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. The standard 10.3-inch touchscreen isn鈥檛 integrated into the center console like the screen in the last-gen X4, but because it鈥檚 mounted higher on the dash, the new system is easier to see and more intuitive to use. Navigation comes standard, as do sports seats and a panoramic moonroof. The multi-color head-up display is 75 percent wider than before and projects an impressive amount of information into the driver鈥檚 line of sight.
