Every year, a bunch of research teams announce the most American-built car in the world. For the last two years, embarrassingly, it was the Toyota Camry, which is built Kentucky. A lot of emphasis has been put on where a car is built since Donald Trump took office this year. President Trump wants to crack down on automakers that want to build cars in Mexico and Canada. Unfortunately, some so-called American cars like the Dodge Challenger and Charger are actually built in Canada. It's hard to tell if a car is truly American-built anymore.
The Kogod School of Business at American University has just published its yearly list that indexes the cars the help benefit the US economy the most. The school used seven criteria including profit margin, labor, and research and development location, among others. If you're the type of person that loves to buy American, then these are the cars that you should be shopping for. GM dominated the top of the list, with the Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia triplets sharing the number one spot with 85.5 percent domestic content. The Ford F-150 and Chevy Corvette (with an automatic transmission) take the number two and three spots with 85 percent and 82.5 percent domestic content, respectively.
The four and five spots are shared between several versions of the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Expedition. The Lincoln Navigator and Ford Taurus share number six, and the Cadillac ATS and CT6 and Chevy Colorado come in at seven with the Jeep Grand Cherokee at eight. The first non-domestic car on the top ten is the Honda Ridgeline, CR-V and Pilot, Acura RDX, Toyota Camry and Kia Optima at nine. Finishing off the top ten are the Ford Explorer and Chevy Malibu Hybrid. Check out the rest of the list on American University's website.
