Clunk From Front Stabilizer Bar - Revised Design Bushings - Installation Procedure

Issue:

Owners of some 2000-02 MY S-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range, may complain of a clunk from the front suspension that can be traced

to the bushings of the front stabilizer bar. A revised stabilizer bar bushing is available that entered production from VIN M44395. This bulletin

describes how to install the new bushing. The new front stabilizer bar bushings are self-lubricating and do not require any grease to be added to the

stabilizer bar or bushings when they are installed.

Action:

In case of a customer complaint of the above condition on a vehicle within the above VIN range, follow the procedure outlined below.

REPLACING FRONT STABILIZER BAR BUSHING WITH REVISED DESIGN

1. Raise vehicle on lift.

2. Remove stabilizer to front cross member securing bolts.

3. Remove and stabilizer bar mounting brackets.

Note:

On vehicles up to VIN M39727, inspect the mounting brackets to ensure the vehicle is equipped with the correct specification brackets. Due to a

supplier error, Thunderbird mounting brackets may have been installed. The S-TYPE bracket has a 10 mm clearance mounting hole, compared

with a 10 x 14.8 mm mounting slot in the Thunderbird bracket (Illustration 1). The Jaguar bracket has an overall hoop height of 55 mm

compared with 56 mm for the Thunderbird bracket and the Jaguar material is 1 mm thinner than the Thunderbird bracket. The incorrect bracket

will reduce the effective clamping load on the bushing resulting in premature bushing failure. Replace any incorrect brackets with part no. XR8

1834.

4. Displace stabilizer bar for access.

5. Remove stabilizer bar bushings.

6. Clean stabilizer bar bush mounting points using suitable cloth.

7. Install new stabilizer bar bushings on stabilizer bar.

Note:

Do not grease new bushings.

8. Align stabilizer bar mounting bushings to mounting positions.

9. Align stabilizer bar mounting brackets.

Note:

Ensure correct stabilizer bar mounting brackets are installed.

10. Install stabilizer bar mounting brackets.
