Vehicle Spotlight: 2019 Mercedes A220 Sedan Dares To Be Different
What exactly is cool, anyway? Fashion is cyclical. It is adaptable. Perhaps most importantly, it is not exclusive to what someone wears. The car a person drives purportedly says a lot about their individuality. And just like denim overalls, one-piece bathing suits, or Mom jeans, 鈥渃hic鈥?has varying degrees of cultural nostalgia and trendiness. As formulaic as it might sound, however, it still takes one brave, cool kid to resurrect it. And for the sake of the sedan as a way of driving life, that kid is Mercedes-Benz. That would be the sporty, all new 2019 A220 鈥?potential automotive influencer, in the most contemporary definition of the word. This will be the first time a true A-Class has ever hit the U.S. The A-Class of old was exclusively a hatchback and was only sold outside the U.S. Many experts maintain that the sedan is a dying breed in America, due to the growing popularity of crossovers and smaller SUVs. But it seems Mercedes would beg to disagree. With a throwback to the small and economical 190, the 2019 Mercedes A220 is here to prove that what鈥檚 old is new again. The four-door sedan is sleek and somehow quaint. It has a 107-inch wheelbase and stands just under 57 inches tall. There are no trap doors anywhere inside either, as the A-Class possesses only 13 cubic feet of cargo storage. While the A-Class certainly isn鈥檛 a family-friendly workhorse, nor does it show any signs of ever becoming one, it upholds the automaker鈥檚 elegant pragmatism in other ways.
With the 2019 A220 Sedan, part of its A-Class family, Mercedes allows buyers to enjoy the look and feel of a luxury vehicle without breaking the bank. The car, which features an MBUX user interface, offers a next-generation infotainment system, comparable to that of a larger luxury car so you can compete with the big boys while climbing the social ladder. 32,500, is the first vehicle to include the MBUX system, which allows drivers to voice-activate almost anything in the dashboard using natural language. If the car is too hot, just ask it to lower the temperature. If you鈥檙e looking for a well-reviewed restaurant on your road trip, let the system know. The in-car voice assistant is possible thanks to Nuance's Dragon Drive speech technology, which can understand individual preferences, personalize entertainment and execute complex commands. The A220 also features three additional input methods in case you don鈥檛 feel like chatting it up with your car.
There is a standard touchscreen located in a 10.25-inch display, a trackpad in the center console and a smaller trackpad on the steering wheel. In addition, the AR display feature shows a camera view of upcoming turns that includes arrows and the name of the road above. The car driver's assistance system includes adaptive cruise control that displays transitions during merges and cut-ins, reads signs and slows down automatically in accordance with the legal speed limit. In addition, the Lane-keep assist keeps the vehicle centered. The A220 has a 2.0-liter inline-four engine, with 188 horsepower and 221 foot-pounds of torque, which may seem underwhelming, but affords enough power to effectively pass cars, navigate on-ramps and drive through mountain areas. The sedan鈥檚 interior features the same design elements found in upper-class vehicles, as well as lighting accents that can be customized with 65 different colors. 310 more, you can have color-changing air vents that go from red to blue when you lower the temperature. As for fuel economy, the Mercedes A 220 delivers an EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon city, 35 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.
Last week, DaimlerChrysler AG's Mercedes-Benz luxury car division unveiled for the first time the Vision C 220 BLUETEC in front of the European crowd at the recent 77e Salon International de l'Auto Geneve (77th annual Geneva International Motor Show). The Vision C 220 BLUETEC joins the company's vehicle lineup of C-Class models. Aside from the overall sleek exterior appearance along with the car's luxurious and elegant interior amenities, the Vision C 220 BLUETEC's key feature is under its hood. The Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC is equipped with the cleanest diesel engine in the world, according to the German automaker. The 4-cylinder engine is capable of pumping out 170 horsepower (125 kW) and produces 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) amount of peak torque. The engine complies with the most stringent emissions standard in the world including the EURO 6 standard and the BIN 5 emissions standard for all 50 states. Even with low fuel consumption and lower exhaust emission, the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC still offers impressive handling and driving performance. DaimlerChrysler AG has developed the BLUTEC clean diesel technology to reduce the diesel nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
