Mercedes-Benz's largest SUV is now available in four model grades: the entry-level GL350 BlueTEC Limited Edition; GL350 BlueTEC Edition S; GL500 Edition S; and flagship GL63 AMG. There are no images of the new models yet, but buyers can see them in showrooms in the coming weeks. The entry-level diesel GL350 model has been updated with new gear such as metallic paint, a Harman Kardon stereo system with DAB digital radio, keyless entry and push-button start, a new 20-inch wheel design, and a new-look wood interior finish. 114,900 plus on-road costs. It retains the same 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 190kW and 620Nm. Power goes to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. 20K to the price but uses the same diesel drivetrain. Its sporty additions include an AMG Sports Package with a body kit, flared wheel arches, 19-inch brakes (perforated front) and 21-inch alloy wheels finished in matt black.
While it's a bit odd that, at this price, the lower-end GL models still come with vinyl upholstery as standard, it is at least a quality product, called MB-Tex, and leather is available for a little more. Visibility from the driver's seat is very good, and it's easy to find a comfortable seating position, especially with the optional contour seats. The second-row seats are very roomy and accommodating, while the third row is decent for adults on short trips. When not in use, the third row can be electrically lowered into a flat load floor. The switch to the GLS-Class name is expected to coincide with a mid-cycle refresh of the three-row Mercedes crossover, which is likely to arrive for the 2017 model year. Mercedes may add a Mercedes-Maybach version of the GLS-Class at that time as well, featuring even finer interior trimmings and other unique styling and equipment. In its first generation, the GL-Class was offered in three different models鈥攖he GL 450, GL 550, and GL 350 BlueTec. All of the models came with a 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GL-Class changed very little between its 2006 introduction and the 2013 model year. In 2009 it received a revised, improved version of the infotainment interface. Also in 2009, the availability of the diesel engine was expanded to 50 states. In the 2010 model year, all versions received a mild styling update. A new GL-Class arrived for 2013, bringing with it revised looks as well as weight reductions to improve efficiency, performance, and handling. For 2015, Mercedes updated the GL 450's engine. It swapped the V-8 for a high-output version of the company's new twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6, tuned to 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Before we get too far, we must offer a caveat: As of press time, the Mercedes-Benz GLS350d has not received a certificate of compliance from the all-powerful U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thanks to increased scrutiny of diesel-powered cars, trucks, and SUVs, the due-for-2017 GLS350d is not yet on sale at U.S. Nevertheless, when the company invited us to sample all its fullsize-SUV wares, we leapt at the opportunity. Nestled in a fleet of fire-spitting Mercedes-AMG GLS63 and G65 SUVs was the object of our oil-burning affection, the GLS350d. Photo 2/14 | Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 invitiation included opportunities to drive each version of the G and GLS SUV for a few days, including the mighty, twin-turbo 6.0L V-12-powered Mercedes-AMG G65. Although we were here for the diesel, it was still tough to give the 621hp SUV鈥檚 keys back. Mercedes renamed its largest SUV (formerly known as the GL-Class) the GLS for the 鈥?7 model year, adding the extra letter to denote its relation to the S-Class sedan. Furthermore, if/when the diesel engine gets certified by the Feds, it will no longer wear a 鈥淏luetec鈥?badge on its rear haunches, eschewing the trademark for a subtle 鈥渄鈥?suffix on the model name.
