They built just 1402 300SL Gullwing coupes, but it was enough to support the spare-parts market. If you write a book on the Gullwing, you鈥檒l always sell at least 1400 of them. If you write a book on, say, the Jackson car, made in Michigan until 1923, you鈥檒l sell five. There might be five Jacksons left out there. My vintage 300SL Gullwing will be finished at about the same time the new SLS AMG Gullwing hits the road. And the old ones still cost more than those brand-new ones. I think that鈥檚 funny, but I do like to see the heritage carried on. The Gullwing works because there鈥檚 a bit of theater involved. The car requires some effort: You can鈥檛 just get in and drive it. There are certain things you have to know about, whether it鈥檚 as simple as the flip-down steering wheel or the heater controls. You sort of pilot these cars; you don鈥檛 necessarily drive them.
You have to understand the handling limitations of those swing axles too鈥攊n high-speed corners they can be a handful. Consequently, you tend to drive a bit more carefully. I鈥檓 not one of those people who have to have the ultimate 300SL with the knockoff Rudge wheels either. That鈥檚 just extra cake frosting. I think the regular hubcaps and steel wheels look a little nicer. The knockoffs can loosen and come off, and I don鈥檛 want to drill them and put safety wire on them. With lug nuts, I know what I鈥檓 doing. It鈥檚 like women who wear those high heels. 鈥淵es, but they鈥檙e really attractive,鈥?they鈥檒l say. And I think to myself, 鈥淏ut they鈥檙e uncomfortable! The Gullwing isn鈥檛 our only Mercedes project. I bought a 6.3-liter 600 sedan from the 1960s with 324,000 miles on it鈥攎y favorite Mercedes from a styling and performance point of view. I thought, why don鈥檛 we install the modern 6.3-liter V8? So we鈥檙e putting in a new AMG 563-hp V8, like the one in the SLS, with a seven-颅speed transmission. We鈥檒l turn it into the ultimate 6.3 Mercedes-Benz.
Its safety net gets more protective, with hardware lifted right from the E-Class and S-Class. This year's additions might not help it with better crash-test scores, but the 2019 C-Class now has semi-autonomous driving skills better than it did just last year. Better sensors and cameras and radar systems widen the envelope and conditions under which the car can follow a vehicle ahead in traffic, for example. It can leverage navigation information to slow down for toll booths. There's NFC and V2X hardware, for a future where cars and buildings talk to each other to constantly update traffic conditions. The C-Class now also can turn itself into a free lane with the click of a stalk. It can steer away from an obstacle that it senses in its blind-spot monitors. And it can add torque to driver inputs to help steer out of an imminent collision. On a more mundane level, the C-Class has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which lets passengers bypass the touchpad interface saddled on COMAND, the old-school Benz infotainment system. A new MBUX system's in the pipeline, but doesn't land in the updated C-Class. Instead, the C300 and AMG C43 get a bigger screen on the dash, digital gauges, and available wireless smartphone charging. It's difficult to spec out a 2019 C-Class that fails to please on some level. Even a C300 sedan with a steel suspension, 17-inch wheels, and synthetic leather feels more lively than the car that came before it.
