The 2018 Audi Allroad is a slightly more raised and chunkier design interpretation of the traditional wagon body style. Having been subjected to a complete redesign last year, changes for the 2018 model year are limited to some equipment and trim upgrades.
What’s it like inside?Featuring a thoroughly modern dashboard including the advanced virtual cockpit, the A4 Allroad is a cut above most other competitors when it comes to the interior. The quality of the controls and finishes are beyond reproach too, occupants up front will appreciate the leather-clad power seats and the head and leg room in the rear is generous enough for adults too. The wagon body style makes for a practical, and in this case spacious, cargo area. The raised body is only slightly higher than on the standard A4 but it does mean you do not have to bend quite as low when loading up the rear.
How does it drive? The A4 Allroad exhibits the same kind of civilized road manners as the sedan A4 that it is based on, grip levels are high and the well-judged suspension settings make for unflustered progress over rough pavement. Audi drive select allows for driving modes such as Offroad, Comfort and Dynamic which subtly change the vehicles driving characteristics.
The standard Quattro all-wheel drive system adds an additional layer of safety in inclement weather conditions and, along with the slightly higher ride-height allow for forays off-road that would be inaccessible to a traditional sedan. Steering feel on the other hand is numb but this problem afflicts others in its class too.
What about the performance? The Audi A4 Allroad is available with a 252 horsepower 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, torque is rated at 273 lb-ft and it is channeled to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The flat torque curve and muscular power delivery make for a rapid wagon, 60 mph is dispatched in 5.9-seconds and in-gear acceleration is right up there with the best in-class too.The claimed combined 27 mpg is commendable too, especially considering the power on hand and the weight of the Allroad.
What are my options? The Audi A4 Allroad is available in three trim levels, starting with the Premium Package you get a comprehensive list of standard convenience features such as power tailgate, rear-view camera, leather seats with the fronts being heated and with 8-way power settings, key-less start, cruise control, shift paddles, panoramic sunroof and much more.Technology wise you get a 7.0-inch MMI infotainment system with smartphone integration (Apple Car Play and Android Auto), Bluetooth streaming, voice control, 10-speaker audio system and a 5-inch driver information system.Safety is also taken care of with the Audi pre sense system which includes forward collision mitigation and autonomous braking assist.
The Premium Plus trim adds LED headlights, 19-speaker B&O audio system, hands-free tailgate and additional safety systems such as rear-view camera, parking system plus and rear cross traffic assist with vehicle exit assist. For those wanting even more there is the top Prestige trim. Here you get a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, collision avoidance assist, top view camera system with an 8.3-inch MMI system and the advanced Audi virtual cockpit which includes MMI navigation plus and handwriting recognition.A number of these options can be had individually and a cold and warm weather package is available on the top two trim levels.
The VerdictThe 2018 Audi Allroad offers shoppers a slightly different take on the standard wagon, with strong performance, light off-roading capability and the benefit of a large cargo area it is a practical go-anywhere vehicle. The high level of standard equipment and luxurious interior further add to its appeal.
