Hopefully The BMW 8 Series Will Sound Better Than These Prototypes

It's not that they sound bad, but just not good enough.

To say we have high expectations for the upcoming BMW 8 Series would be sort of an understatement. While we respect the 6 Series, it still doesn’t quite capture the spirit of first-generation 8 Series in terms high performance mixed with a hearty dose of grand touring elegance. The second-generation 8 Series, revealed in concept form at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, will supposedly arrive production ready sometime next year as a 2019 model. Our best guess is that it’ll debut at Geneva this March.

Until then, BMW is still actively testing advanced prototypes on regular roads and, of course, the Nurburgring. This latest spy video comes courtesy of Statesidesupercars, and it shows both the 2019 850i and M8.

Look carefully and you’ll notice not only different license plates, but also separate exhaust systems. Thing is, neither one of those systems sound the way we imagined. Honestly, we were hoping for an angrier, deeper growl, especially in the M8. Honestly, this M8 prototype sounds kind of like the new M5, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just not quite good enough for what’ll be BMW’s high-performance flagship. Fortunately, there’s still time to get everything sorted.
