Engine - Replacement Cylinder Head Information

No: LS-303-001

Issue: 1

Date: 13 Mar 2006

SECTION: 303-001

Cylinder Head Built To Supercharged Specification

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Range Rover Sport (LS)

VIN: ALL

CONDITION SUMMARY:

CONVERT REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD TO V.C.T. SPECIFICATION

Cylinder heads are supplied by Land Rover Parts Operations as common units for all variants of AJV8 engine, (4.4 liter normally aspirated and 4.2

liter supercharged).

Situation:

The oil supply gallery for the Variable Camshaft Timing (V.C.T.) unit is present on all cylinder heads but the gallery is blocked by a blind rivet plug

in the spare part configuration. The spare is configured to the Non-V.C.T. specification.

Action:

When a replacement cylinder head is to be fitted to an engine which is equipped with V.C.T., the cylinder head must have the blind rivet plug

removed before it is installed. If the plug is not removed V.C.T. will not function on the cylinder bank with the new head.

The aluminum blind rivet plug in the V.C.T. supply gallery is secured in position in a similar manner to a pop rivet in that the centre pin and cone is

pulled to expand the rivet until the pin shears below the head. This leaves the aluminum plug and the head of the pin in position to seal the gallery.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

REMOVE BLIND RIVIT FROM V.C.T. OIL GALLEY

1. Remove a blind rivet plug as follows:

^ Place the cylinder head upon a clean workbench area with access to a compressed air supply.

^ Identify the V.C.T. supply gallery and the 8 mm. plug. (Arrowed in Figure 1)

^ Using a suitable 3 mm (1/8 in), punch, drive the pin and cone (A, Figure 1) through the centre of the plug until they fall loose beyond the

plug.

NOTE:

The centre bore of the plug is 6 mm (7/32 in) diameter.

^ Engage a suitable screw extractor into the plug.

^ Rotate and withdraw the plug (B, Figure 1).

2. Probe the gallery with a magnet to locate and withdraw the pin and cone.

3. Identify the oil supply gallery in the lower cylinder head face and apply a clean compressed air supply to flush out any debris that may be lying

in the V.C.T. supply gallery.
