Watch The New Porsche Cayman GT4 Do Some Wicked Cool Power Slides

At the Nurburgring, no less.

Porsche is conducting the final testing phase for its next 718 Cayman GT4. Our spy photographers have caught prototypes testing at the Nurburgring a few times in the past, but today they managed to take a video of a very thinly disguised test mule doing some power sides. Of course it’s taking place at the Nurburgring, where else for testing at this level?

Like the current GT4, the next one will once again feature a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, as opposed to the turbocharged options in the rest of the 718 Cayman/Boxster lineup (the next Boxster Spyder, of course, is the exception). But instead of the current GT4’s 3.8-liter, Porsche is swapping it with the same 4.0-liter unit that also powers the latest 911 GT3.

Considering the GT4 is smaller and lighter than the 911 GT3, does it mean it’ll be better than its bigger sibling? Chances are no, and here’s why: Porsche can’t allow a lesser model to dethrone the 911 GT3. The 911 GT3 RS and GT2 RS are slotted above the GT3. While the current GT3 produces 500 hp, chances are Porsche will slightly detune that figure to around 450 hp or so.

Power, of course, will be direct to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or optional PDK gearbox. The near-production GT4 featured here is quite revealing, showing details like its large rear fixed wing, rear diffuser, and some serious front end work in the name of downforce. Strangely, Porsche covered the Porsche badge at the front of the hood, as if no one knew this was a Porsche from the get-go. So, when will the big unveiling happen? We think it’ll be at either Paris in October or LA the following month.

Pricing will likely be similar to the previous GT4, which started at around $85,000. Since it’s been out of production for some time, Porsche must be anxious to get its successor into the marketplace. Will it be the last naturally aspirated 718 Cayman GT4? Only time will tell.
